“so what? that’s all you got?”
“why, did you want a monologue about how life’s a mess, but we’ll get through it?”
“i suppose.”
“nah, you already know wo sab.”
“you don’t get it. i feel suffocated. stuck. kuch bhi theek nahi chal raha hai. i don’t even know who i am anymore.”
he sat up, turning to face her. “so, don’t figure it all out at once. let’s start small.”
“with what?”
“i don’t know… what’s something you want to fix first?”
“i guess... my grades. maybe.”
“cool. we’ll start there.”
“we?”
“yeah, we. you can’t rebuild your empire solo, can you?”
“empire? you’re ridiculous.”
“maybe. but you smiled, so that’s one piece back already.”

i sometimes wonder what it would’ve been like if you’d been there sooner. before the cracks in my heart started to feel like permanent fixtures. before i learned to speak in half-truths because the full ones felt too heavy to share. before the world taught me how to flinch.

maybe if we’d met earlier, i’d have been softer. you’d have met the version of me that laughed easily and dreamed recklessly. the me that didn’t carry around invisible suitcases packed with old hurts and quiet fears. maybe i wouldn’t have questioned your kindness so much, or wondered if it came with a hidden cost.

but then again, would i have even recognized you back then? would i have known what it means to be truly seen, if i hadn’t spent so long being invisible? would i have understood the value of what we have, if i hadn’t first learned what it feels like to lose everything?

so, yeah, i wish we met before all these bad things happened. but maybe—just maybe—those things brought me to you. and maybe this version of me, messy as she is, is the one who knows how to love you best.
