J&K Assembly elections likely in April or September-October

JAMMU, Jan 3 Jammu and Kashmir might see its first Assembly elections since it was declared a union territory in 2019 in April or September-October this year.
The Centre is reportedly taking feedback from the UT administration and local leaders to ensure the polls are conducted smoothly. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is holding meetings with administrative officials to check how soon the elections can be held.
A senior BJP leader told the J&K elections could be conducted in September-October as the weather would be conducive during that period. Another senior leader said the polls could be held in April, as the weather in Jammu becomes too hot after May and too cold in Kashmir during winter. BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh earlier suggested May for the same.
The second BJP leader as saying the administration looked "unwilling" to undertake the exercise, but the ground situation was favorable for polls to be held. They also said the BJP was preparing for the election for the past two years. Reportedly, PM Narendra Modi, BJP National President JP Nadda, and Shah are all set to visit J&K over the next three months.
Many said the most suitable time for conducting the polls is in April or September-October because the Union government would be able to spare paramilitary forces for free and fair polls. Although there are no talks on restoring the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir yet, News18 said some BJP leaders believe it might be restored once a democratically elected government maintains peace there.
The J&K National Conference, Mehbooba M***i-led People's Democratic Party, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and the J&K Awami National Conference—together known as the Gupkar Alliance—might join hands with Congress before polls. Ex-Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who earlier launched the Democratic Azad Party, might also back the alliance for the 2023 polls. Abrogation of Article 370 is expected to top the parties' agenda.
The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly was disbanded in 2018 after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) withdrew support from the People's Democratic Party (PDP). The opposition parties approached then-Governor Satya Pal Malik claiming the strength of the majority to form the government. However, the governor dissolved the Assembly claiming he never received any related formal communication as his fax machine was out of order.

With 'Safe Haven' Jammu turning into 'Terror Target'

JAMMU, Jan 3: Last week, a few kilometres away from the biggest colony of Kashmiri Pandits in Jammu’s Jagti, the Jammu and Kashmir police and security forces eliminated four terrorists and recovered 15 kg of improvised explosive device (IED), along with RDX. While the news caused panic, the killing of seven, including two children, in Rajouri district over Sunday and Monday, has only amplified the fear, especially among the Kashmiri Pandits who moved to Jammu, from Kashmir, thinking it was a safe zone and can’t move back now.
When to Kashmiri Pandits, who are coping with fear and threats from terror outfits in J&K, while handling financial liabilities and family responsibilities.
“One of our family members, who had got a job in the PM Package, recently got a threat from a terror outfit, The Resistance Front (TRF). The family member tried to move back to Kashmir, but now it looks almost impossible. Our family of four depends on his earnings, which has been on hold from more than 200 days," a Kashmiri Pandit, who didn’t wish to be named, told on the phone.
Families have instructed their kin working under the PM Package to live like locals and choose long-distance travel over living in villages. Employees of banks and schools have been asked to live and travel together if they want to continue.
Another Kashmiri Pandit, while giving example of a recent seizure from a connecting road close to their houses, said his relative has decided to resume work as he has financial liabilities. “The family has a wedding ahead and already has a loan to repay. The Kashmiri Pandit will live almost 30-40 km away from his office and change his look, too, just like the others. There is a small group of Kashmiri Pandits in a locality in Kashmir. They hardly speak Hindi while travelling because of fear. There are villages which are vacant, but no one dares to live there even if it is close to their workplace," another Kashmiri Pandit told.

KP's shouldn't have been asked to stay in valley "forcibily": Mehbooba M***i
*Seizure of schools, assets of JeI won't change ground reality

BUDGAM, Dec 22 : PDP president and former chief minister J&K, Mehbooba M***i on Thursday said that Kashmiri Pandits shouldn't have been asked to stay in Kashmir Valley "forcibly" as the community has suffered immensely owing to the unending uncertain situation in J&K.
"The decision about stoping their (KPs) salaries is a harsh one. They have suffered badly for many years even when we were in power. They should not have asked to stay in valley forcibly, instead government should ensure favorable atmosphere for them so that they resume their respective offices hassle-free", Mehboba M***i as per KNS told to reporters during her visit to Chadoora village in central Kashmir's Budgam.
She accused BJP of taking advantage of sufferings of Kashmiri Pandit's. "BJP has no sympathy towards KPs. They used the miserable community only for political gains which is very unfortunate", she said.
Over threats issued by TRF to Kashmiri Pandit's, the PDP president Mehbooba M***i said "these actions are highly condemnable", and added, "If government is beating drums of normalcy, then why Moulvi's (religious clerics) being arrested, journalists summoned, employees kicked out from services, politicians & businessmen being targeted by ED etc".
She said the way New Delhi treats people of J&K seems they are at war with us and treats our people as "enemies".
To a query, she replied that the idea of separatism need to be addressed instead of resorting to callous and harsh measures. "The Govt. is sealing Jama’at-e-Islami run schools and it's properties who were imparting qualitative education to poor children. But BJP being having a communal mindset want to cool its inner with these measures", Mehbooba said.
"This will yield nothing. The ground reality cannot be changed by harsh tactics employed by BJP", Mehbooba added.

KP employees hit out at J&K L-G over ‘salary’ remark, asks admin to ‘sack’ them

JAMMU, Dec 22: Annoyed with the Lt Governor Manoj Sinha remarks during media briefing at Convention Centre in Jammu on December 21, Angry Migrant Kashmiri Pandit employees on Wednesday intensified their months-long protest demanding a transfer from the Valley following Lt Governor’s remarks about stopping their salaries.
The protesters also said it was best for the government to sack them as they would not rejoin their services in the Valley in the absence of proper security after a Lashkar-e-Taiba affiliate published hit-lists of Kashmiri Pandit employees.
The migrant Kashmiri Pandit and Jammu-based reserved category employees left the Valley in May following the targeted killings of two colleagues. They are seeking relocation outside Kashmir.
Earlier in the day, Sinha asserted that all necessary measures had been taken to ensure the safety of minority community employees, including Kashmiri Pandits, in the Valley and sent out a “loud and clear” message to those demanding a transfer no salary for sitting at home.
“We have cleared their (protesting employees’) salaries till August 31 but it cannot be done that they will be paid their salaries by sitting at their homes. This is a loud and clear message to them and they should listen and understand it,” Sinha told reporters.
In response, the Kashmiri Pandit employees, employed under the Prime Minister’s Rehabilitation Package in the Valley, held demonstrations in front of the Press Club in Jammu.
Carrying placards depicting the administration’s “step-motherly treatment” towards them, they also raised slogans in support of their relocation.
“It is an unfortunate statement. It is better for the government to sack us all. We will not go to the Valley to join services. Our lives are more important than jobs,” a protester told reporters.
He said that if the government wanted to stop their salaries, it was free to do so.
“Our salaries should be used for nation building,” he added.
The protester also said Kashmiri Pandit employees could not be made symbols of peace and normality in Kashmir.
“We are in this position because of the situation created by the government. We had been living in the Valley for the past decade. But now, hit-lists are being issued to kill us. Do you want me to go to Kashmir and get killed?” he asked.
He was referring to a blog linked to The Resistance Front, an offshoot of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, that has released separate lists of Kashmiri Pandit employees recruited under the Prime Minister’s Rehabilitation Package and threatened to turn their transit colonies into “graveyards”.
“Who will protect us? The administration has failed to protect us from selective killings,” another protester said.
“We want the government to assure us that no Kashmiri Pandit will be targeted by militants in the future. If they are not in a position to give such an assurance, please accept our demand and relocate us outside Kashmir,” he added.
Similarly,, Reserved Category Employees posted in Kashmir division also held massive protest in front of the BJP office in Jammu against Lt Governor’s remarks. They demanded comprehensive transfer policy. The BJP leaders ex Dy CM Kainder Gupta, Devender Rana came out of their office and address the employees. They assured them we will take up their matter with the J&K govt.
