महर्षि वाल्मीकि ऋषि-द्रष्टा थे। वस्तुओं के भाव, धर्म तथा तत्व का सुविज्ञ जन ही ऋषि पद से वन्दनीय होता है। आदिकवि ने किसी प्राचीन काव्य का दर्शन, श्रवण तथा अवलम्बन किये बिना ही सर्वोत्कृष्ट काव्य का निर्माण किया। वे कविहृदय थे। कवि का अर्थ होता है- नेत्रों के व्यापार से दूर रहने वाला अतीत एवं अनागत पदार्थों को यथार्थ रूप से देखने वाला दिव्य पुरुष। यही कारण है कि ऐतिहासिक काल के अरूणोदय में रचे जाने पर भी यह ग्रंथ अनुपम और अद्वितीय है।
