Guwahati: In a first, a Himalayan serow was spotted in the central part of Nameri National Park and Tiger Reserve on Monday, reports Dhrubajyoti Malakar.

The big goat, which is usually found in the Himalayan hilly and foothill forests, was spotted during this year’s phase-IV camera trapping exercise in the national park, a forest officer said.

The species is enlisted as “Vulnerable” in the IUCN red list category and in appendix one of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

DFO of Western Assam Wildlife Division and field director of the reserve, Piraisoodan B, told TOI, “This is indeed a piece of significant news as the sighting has added a new feather to the diverse biodiversity of the national park. Nameri is more diverse in animal species than other forests in the state.

A massive landslide occurred on 24th of May in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea which buried hundreds of people and caused major destruction and loss of life.

Cotton University has announced that the UG Semester VI Examination scheduled for May 28, 2024, has been postponed to June 5, 2024.

The decision was made in consideration of the prevailing weather conditions and with the approval of the Vice Chancellor. This change is intended to ensure the safety and convenience of the students.

The Assam Government has issued a high alert for the general public in view of cyclone ‘Remal’ and its effects across the state.

Issuing a high alert, the state government advised people in selected areas to take precautionary measures and avoid venturing out for fishing and other agricultural activities.

In a post on platform ‘X’, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) wrote, “Residents in the areas mentioned below should take precautions and avoid venturing out for fishing and other agricultural activities due to the risk of falling trees from strong winds.”

According to the CMO, a red alert has been issued for people in Dhubri, Goalpara, Barpeta, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Cachar, Dima Hasao, Bajali, Baksa, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Darrang, Golaghat, Hojai, Kamrup, Kamrup M, Morigaon and Karbi Anglong districts for May 28 (Tuesday).

NEWS | Seven Students Injured After Tree Fell On School Bus In Assam

Seven students were injured after a tree fell over a school bus in Dhekiajuli, Assam on May 28.

The bus was reportedly of St Ursula English High School in Keharukhanda, Dhekiajuli and was out to pick up students when the accident occurred.

Cyclone Remal Live Updates: As heavy rain and gusty winds persist in Kolkata following the landfall of severe cyclonic storm ‘Remal,’ efforts are underway to mitigate its impact.

At least two people lost their lives in West Bengal as Cyclone Remal wreaked havoc across the state and neighbouring Bangladesh, with wind speeds reaching up to 135 km per hour, PTI reported, citing officials.

The Kolkata Municipality team and Kolkata Police Disaster Management team are actively involved in clearing uprooted trees, particularly in the Alipore area of the city. Late-night visuals depicted workers diligently striving to clear roads amidst ongoing rainfall.

Flight services at the Kolkata airport resumed on Monday morning after being suspended for 21 hours due to Cyclone Remal. Airport sources, however, said it would take some more time for the situation to become normal.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed a total of 14 teams in the state. These teams are on standby to assist in rescue and relief operations.

The Meteorological office announced that 'Remal' had weakened into a cyclonic storm by 5:30 am on Monday, situated approximately 70 km northeast of Canning and 30 km west-southwest of Mongla. The system is anticipated to continue weakening gradually.

As a precautionary measure, West Bengal evacuated over 1 lakh people from vulnerable areas of the state to safety.

Top Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar on Sunday became the first from the country to win a gold medal in the Asian Senior Championships as she clinched the yellow metal in the women's vault event. The 30-year-old Dipa secured an average of 13.566 in the vault final on the last day of competitions in Uzbekistan's capital city.

North Koreans Kim Son Hyang (13.466) and Jo Kyong Byol (12.966) grabbed the silver and bronze medals respectively.

Dipa, who had finished fourth in the vault final at the 2016 Rio Olympics, had won a bronze medal in the same event in the 2015 edition.

Ashish Kumar had a won bronze medal in individual floor exercise in 2015 Asian Championships. Pranati Nayak had also bagged a bronze each in vault event in the 2019 and 2022 editions.

Dipa, who returned to action last year after a 21-month suspension for a doping offence, is out of contention for the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Rajkot: Twenty-seven people, including nine children, have died in a massive fire that broke out at a gaming zone in Gujarat's Rajkot on Saturday evening, said officials.
"The bodies are completely charred and it is difficult to identify them," Assistant Commissioner of Police Vinayak Patel said. The owners of the gaming zone have been detained by the police.

“A very sad incident took place today. This is the first time in Rajkot's history that a fire in a gaming zone has led to the deaths of people, including children. The focus is on rescuing as many as possible. The government will act against people whose negligence led to this tragedy,” said Darsh*ta Shah, MLA, Rajkot West. A ₹ 4 lakh compensation has been announced for the families of the victims.
