The flood situation in Assam continues to threaten life and property with around 40 lakh people estimated to be affected in 27 of the state’s 33 districts

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, the inundation has claimed 76 lives

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to reduce the syllabus of state Secondary Education Board by 30 per cent, and divide the rest of the syllabus in three parts.

They will be covered using videos, self-study, and projects and assignments, Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma said on Thursday, adding subject specialists would prepare the study material on the basis of classes, subjects, and chapters. They will also prepare monthly and annual calendars, he added.
While videos for the first part of the syllabus will be made for online classes, and telecast on Swayam Prabha and Doordarshan, the second part of the syllabus will have to be studied by students on their own. The third part is meant for project work.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Department of Higher Education issued guidelines for pending final semester or final-year university examinations in the 2020-’21 academic year, and directed the institutions to complete them by September 30 either online or through a mix of both online and offline processes. According to the guidelines, all remaining examinations will be suspended.

India’s foreign-exchange reserves are at a record and approaching the $500 billion mark, and yet, the rupee is Asia’s worst performer over the past three months.

That’s because the Reserve Bank of India doesn’t seem to be in a mood to give the currency a free run even as most of its regional peers have rebounded from the virus-induced selloff. Indonesia’s rupiah, the rupee’s high-yielding counterpart, is leading the gains.

Analysts say the central bank is adding to reserves to guard against a likely downgrade in India’s credit rating or to ensure a bigger transfer of surplus to the revenue-starved government. The RBI likely bought about $9 billion in the forex market in the four weeks ended May 29, according to Bloomberg Economics, pushing up reserves to a record $493.5 billion.

“The rupee is unable to do it, inspite of the surge in capital inflows, due to the dollar buying spree from the central bank," said Anindya Banerjee, currency strategist at Kotak Securities Ltd. The mop up is sign that the RBI sees the inflows as temporary and prone to reversal if growth fails to pick up, he said.

UK flag carrier British Airways is retiring its entire Boeing 747 "Jumbo Jet" fleet, it said Friday, following the huge hit to international air travel caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"It is with great sadness that we can confirm we are proposing to retire our entire 747 fleet with immediate effect," the airline said in a statement to AFP.

"It is unlikely our magnificent 'queen of the skies' will ever operate commercial services for British Airways again due to the downturn in travel caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic."

The 400-passenger 747 was launched by Boeing in 1970, and dominated international air travel and cargo over the following decades.

With 31 Jumbos in its fleet, BA currently flies more of the planes than any other airline, according to its statement.

It added the last had been due to retire in 2024 as the carrier turns to more modern and fuel-efficient models like Boeing's 787 and the Airbus A350.

The airline has announced plans to lay off 12,000 staff and last month was reported to be selling off artworks by Damien Hirst, Bridget Riley and Peter Doig thought to be worth millions of pounds to raise funds.

Boeing itself has announced 16,000 layoffs.

A series of high-profile Twitter accounts were hijacked on Wednesday, with some of the platform's top voices — including U.S. presidential candidate Joe Biden, reality television show star Kim Kardashian, former U.S. President Barack Obama, billionaire Elon Musk, and rapper Kanye West, among many others — used to solicit digital currency.

Nearly two hours after the first wave of hacks, the cause of the breach had not yet been made public. In a sign of the seriousness of the problem, Twitter took the extraordinary step of preventing at least some verified accounts from publishing messages altogether.

It was not clear whether all verified users were affected but, if they were, it would have a huge impact on the platform and its users. Verified users include celebrities, journalists, and news agencies as well as governments, politicians, heads of state, and emergency services.

Google’s investment of $4.5 billion (Rs 33,737 crore) in Jio Platforms Ltd, for 7.73 percent stake aims to accelerate India’s digital economy over the next five to seven years through a mix of equity investments, partnerships, and operational, infrastructure and ecosystem investments, CEO Sundar Pichai said.

Pichai, announcing the partnership with Reliance Jio on Wednesday added, more work needs to be done to provide digital access to billions of Indians who still don't own a smartphone.

Google and Jio Platforms have entered into a commercial agreement to jointly develop an entry-level affordable smartphone with optimizations to the Android operating system and the Play Store.

“Through this partnership with Jio Platforms we see the chance to have an even greater impact that either company could have alone.

Earlier this week Pichai announced the ‘Google For India digitization fund’ committing Rs 75,000 crore to accelerate India's digital economy for the next five years.

“Our investment of $4.5 million in Jio is the first and biggest investment we will make towards this effort. I'm excited that our collaboration will focus on increasing access for hundreds of million of users who don't currently own a smartphone while improving the mobile experience for all,” Pichai said at the 43rd Annual General Meeting of Reliance Industries Limited.

The Delhi High Court on July 14 refused to grant interim relief to Army officer, who had challenged the army’s decision to ban the use of social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram for the Army personnel.

A division bench of Justices Rajiv Sahai Endlaw and Justice Asha Menon while listing the matter for further hearing on July 21, said that no relief could be granted to petitioner Lieutenant Colonel PK Choudhary as it is the matter concerning the security and safety of the country.

The court was hearing the petition, challenging the Central government`s decision to bar personnel of the security forces from using social media platforms.
The petition urged the High Court to issue directions to the Director-General of Military Intelligence (DGMS) to withdraw its policy dated August 6, 2020.

The petitioner, who currently serving in the Indian Army and posted in Jammu and Kashmir, claimed to be an active user of Facebook and uses the platform inter alia to connect with his friends and family.

A Delhi court Monday allowed foreign nationals from 14 countries to walk free on payment of different fines, after they accepted mild charges, under the plea bargain process, related to various violations including visa norms while attending Tablighi Jamaat congregation here during the COVID-19 lockdown, a lawyer said.

Foreigners from five countries, however, claimed trial before the court, said the lawyer.

Metropolitan Magistrate Himanshu allowed the foreign nationals from Algeria, Belgium, UK, Egypt and Philippines to walk free on payment of a fine of Rs, 10,000 each.

Another Metropolitan Magistrate Aashish Gupta allowed five Sudanese nationals to walk free on payment of a fine of 5000 each.

Metropolitan Magistrate Paras Dalal allowed foreigners from China, Morocco , Ukraine, Ethiopia, Fiji, Australia, Brazil, Afghanistan were allowed to walk free on payment of a fine of 5000 each.

They were allowed to walk free after the Sub-divisional magistrate of Lajpat Nagar, who was the complainant in the case, Additional commissioner of Police of Lajpat Nagar, Inspector of Nizamuddin said they have no objection to their plea.

At least one worker was injured after a major fire broke out following an explosion at a pharmaceutical unit near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh on Monday night, officials said.

The incident triggered panic among the residents in the Paravada area as it came just over a couple of months after the styrene vapour leak in the LG Polymers plant in the region.

An explosion was first heard at Pharma City, following which there was a huge fire. The incident is said to have occurred in the Coastal Waste Management Project, a unit of Ramky Solvents, according to sources.

At least nine fire tenders were being pressed into service to put out the massive blaze and also prevent it from spreading to other pharma plants in the vicinity, Visakhapatnam District Collector V Vinay Chand said.

A worker sustained burn injuries, while three others who were also at the unit when the incident occurred escaped to safety. The injured was rushed to a hospital in Gajuwaka in the city for treatment, Chand said.

The cause of the incident is not yet known, and fire and emergency services personnel could not immediately reach the spot as the blaze has engulfed the area, police sources said.

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani is now richer than Alphabet (Google's parent) co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page in terms of net worth, becoming the world's sixth-richest person.

Ambani is now worth $72.4 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Monday's 3 per cent surge in RIL's shares saw Ambani's wealth rising by $2.17 billion. A drop in US tech shares on Monday saw Page's value dropping to $71.6 billion, while Brin's stood at $69.4 billion.

Ambani, 63, had just last week surpassed Warren Buffett to become the eighth richest person in the world. With shares of RIL doubling since hitting a low in March owing to a series of investments in the digital unit Jio, Ambani's wealth saw a significant surge amid the coronavirus crisis. He is currently the only Asian business tycoon in the exclusive club of the world's top 10 richest people last month, according to the index.

However, despite the surge, Ambani's wealth was down 1 per cent compared to pre-COVID levels, according to a report by Hurun Research.

India's most valued company by market capitalisation (m-cap), Reliance Industries, is now the world's 51st most-valued company by market cap.

The m-cap of Reliance Industries surged above Rs 12 lakh crore after US telecom and tech giant Qualcomm Ventures announced an investment of up to Rs 730 crore for a 0.15 per cent equity stake in Jio Platforms. This was the 13th uninterrupted investment in Jio since April.

In a massive development, the Congress has sacked Sachin Pilot as Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan, as well as the chief of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee (RPCC), taking disciplinary action against its long-time leader following his failure to attend the second CLP meeting in Jaipur.

Apart from Pilot, two other cabinet ministers will be sacked from the party itself after they decided to stay back with Pilot and give the CLP meet a miss, which was seen as Congress' last-ditch attempt to mend fences with the miffed leader and his faction.

This follows the resolution passed by the Congress party in their second CLP meeting demanding disciplinary action against Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot and the rebel MLAs. Sources say that 104 MLAs present at the ongoing Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting at Fairmont Hotel in Jaipur have unanimously demanded that Sachin Pilot should be removed from the party. The numbers are disputed, and the BJP is likely to move for a floor test. Sacking Pilot, Congress accused him of falling prey to the BJP's conspiracy to topple the Rajasthan government.

After staking claim to Indian territories of Lipulekh-Kalapani in a new controversial map, Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Monday claimed that Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Rama, is in Nepal and Lord Rama was Nepali.

“Although real Ayodhya lies at Thori, city in the west of Birgunj, India has claimed that Lord Rama was born there. Due to these continuous claims, even we have believed that deity Sita got married to Prince Rama of India. However, in reality, Ayodhya is a village lying west of Birgunj,” Oli claimed at an event organised at Prime Minister's residence in Kathmandu.

The Prime Minister also blamed India of cultural encroachment by “creating a fake Ayodhya.”

Technology giant Google Monday announced an investment of Rs 75,000 crore to boost India’s digital economy.

At the online edition of the annual ‘Google for India’ event, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced the ‘Google for India Digitisation Fund’.

“Through this effort, we will invest 75,000 crore rupees or approximately 10 billion dollars into India over the next 5 to 7 years. We will do this through a mix of equity investments, partnerships and ecosystem investments,” he said.

“As we make these investments, we look forward to working alongside Prime Minister Modi and the Indian government as well as Indian businesses of all sizes to realise their shared vision for a Digital India,” Pichai added.

Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, present at the online event, welcomed the investment. “I’m very happy to learn that Google is making a huge investment in the Google India digitisation fund,” he said.

The investment will not only boost India’s digital growth, but will further promote Google’s own products such as its payment service Google Pay as more small businesses learn to conduct business using the internet. Other Google products that stand to benefit from the investment will be services like Google Search, and futuristic technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), where Google is making headway.

A 26-year-old Vadodara resident was arrested on Sunday night following outrage over his video that surfaced on social media where he could be seen hurling abuses at a female stand-up comedian, police said.

Shubham Mishra had posted a video on his Instagram account wherein he can be seen passing derogatory remarks against stand-up comedian Agrima Joshua and giving her r**e threats over her year-old video on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s statue in Maharashtra.

Mishra’s arrest came as NCW sought immediate action against him. NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma wrote a letter to Gujarat DGP regarding the video that was going viral. “The NCW is committed to creating safe online space for women and ensuring cyber security to women and is perturbed by the rise in use of cyberspace to instigate crime against women,” she said in the letter.

Vadodara City Police took suo moto action against Mishra for uploading and sharing the video. “We have detained him and initiated legal process for registration of FIR against him under relevant section of IPC and IT act,” they wrote on Twitter.

Mishra later took down the video and apologised for the abusive comments he made.

RBI governor Shaktikanta Das on Saturday said that the economy is showing signs of normalising in response to the staggered easing of restrictions and argued that the policy measures announced by RBI to counter the impact of Covid-19 appear to have worked so far.

Despite the easing, the governor said that it was uncertain when supply chains would be restored fully; how long it would take for demand conditions to normalise; and what kind of durable effects the pandemic would leave behind on potential growth.

The governor said that banks were in a better shape in March this year compared to the previous year. However, this was not enough as once in hundred-year risk events were now taking place more than once a decade, he said.

To encourage entrepreneurs establish new ventures and generaete employment opportunities, the Uttar Pradesh government has approveed a startup policy.

The Yogi Adityanath cabinet on Wednesday gave its nod to the Uttar Pradesh Startup Policy 2020, a statement issued by the state government said. As till now there was no comprehensive startup policy in the state, an independent and comprehensive olicy was required, the government has said.

The startup policy aims at setting up 100 incubators in Uttar Pradesh and at least one in every district, and developing an ecosystem to set up at least 10,000 startups.

The state government said the policy would help in turning the youth from job seekers to job providers.

The Yogi Adityanath government also aims at bringing Uttar Pradesh among the top three states in the startup sector in the country and setting up India’s biggest startup incubator in Lucknow.

According to the statement, the startup policy is expected to create direct employment opportunities for 50,000 people and indirect employment for one lakh people in the state.

The startup policy would be valid for five years from the date of notification, the statement said.

Two terrorists were shot dead after the Army foiled an infiltration bid along Line of Control (LoC) in in north Kashmir Kupwara District on July 11.

The move was detected by Indian Army troops in Naugam sector in Baramulla along the LoC early Saturday morning, Defence spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia said.

Troops then launched an ambush, leading to the elimination of two terrorists.

Following a rapid surge in the number of coronavirus cases in Uttar Pradesh, the state government has decided to impose a 55-hour lockdown starting from 10 pm on July 10 till 5 pm on July 13.

The State Chief Secretary R K Tiwari in an order to the district and police administration on Friday, said, "The restrictions are being imposed to control the spread of COVID-19 and communicable diseases like malaria, encephalitis, dengue and kala-azar."
As per the lockdown rules, all offices, markets, rural areas, mandis and commercial establishments will remain closed.

However, doorstep delivery will be allowed.
The only those associated with essential services will be permitted to move out, but they must show their identity cards which will be taken as their "duty pass".

There will be no restrictions on flights or trains, and the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation will be allowed to operate buses for train passengers. Although, other bus services will not function.
For the first time on Thursday, the number of active infections in the state reached a five-digit figure, 10,373,

Uttar Pradesh so far has had more than 30,000 cases of coronavirus, of which more than 20,000 patients have recovered, 845 patients have died.

Prime Minister NarendraModi on July 10, said that Asia’s largest Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project in MadhyaPradesh’s Rewa will not only help the state but the entire world as a secure foundation for a clean environment.

The Prime Minister dedicated the 750-megawatt ultra mega solarpower plant to the nation through video conferencing.

The government has said that the plant will reduce emission equivalent to approximately 15 lakh tonne of carbondioxide every year.

“Solar energy is going to be a major medium of energy needs not only today but in the 21st century. Because solar energy is sure, pure and secure,” the Prime Minister said.

“Today, Rewa has really scripted history. Rewa is identified with the name of mother Narmada and the white tiger. Now, the name of Asia’s largest solar power project has also been added to it,” he said.

Eight days after the Bikru village bloodbath in which eight cops were killed, gangster Vikas Dubey was shot dead in an early Friday morning encounter by the STF and police.

The encounter occurred near Sachendi area, 2km from district headquarters, when one of the three police vehicles taking gangster Vikas Dubey to Kanpur from Ujjain, where he was arrested, overturned following heavy rains near Sachendi on the highway.

SP west Anil Kumar meanwhile told reporters Vikas Dubey attempted to flee by snatching pistol of the injured policemen after the car bringing him to Kanpur from Ujjain overturned on the highway in Sachendi area. Police tried to make him surrender, during which he opened fire at them. In the retaliatory firing, he was injured following which police rushed him to Lala Lajpat Rai hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

STF personnel, who suffered injuries have also been admitted to LLR hospital. Senior police officials including IG Kanpur range Mohit Agarwal and SSP Dinesh Kumar Prabhu have rushed to the hospital to take note of the situation.

Gangster Vikas Dubey was killed in an encounter after a road accident on Friday morning while being taken to Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh from Madhya Pradesh, where he was arrested yesterday.

The car in which Vikas Dubey was being taken overturned on the highway that was slick with rain and he tried to escape after snatching a gun, according to the police. He was shot dead, like three of his accomplices who, according to the police, had also tried to escape from custody.

Instagram is expanding its TikTok competitor known as “Reels” to new markets, following its launch last year in Brazil. Starting today, Instagram is rolling out further access to Reels in France and Germany, allowing users to record short, 15-second video clips set to music or other audio, then share them on the platform where they have the potential to go viral.

The Reels feature is similar to TikTok in that it presents a set of editing tools that make it easier to film creative videos. At launch, for example, Reels offered a countdown timer, the ability to adjust the video’s speed and other effects.

The company learned from its early tests in Brazil and has since rethought key aspects to the Reels experience.

Before, Reels were meant to be shared only within Instagram Stories. But the Instagram community said they wanted the ability to share Reels with followers and friends in a more permanent way, and also have the opportunity to expand that distribution more broadly if desired.

After the government of India banned 59 Chinese apps for everyone in the country, the Indian army asks soldiers and officers to delete 89 apps from their smartphone. The report first comes from news agency ANI. The agency posted a full list of 89 apps on Wednesday. Notably, the list includes more than just apps with China origin such as Facebook, Tinder, Instagram, among others.

In a Twitter post, the news agency stated that the “Indian Army has asked its personnel to delete 89 apps from their smartphone including Facebook, TikTok, Truecaller, and Instagram to plug leakage of information.” The list includes both Chinese and non-Chinese apps ranging from messaging platforms to health apps to popular mobile games and more.

The sub-inspector of Delhi Police was drunk at the time of the incident. The incident took place in Chilla Village near Ghazipur area on Friday evening. The woman who was injured in the accident is undergoing treatment at a hospital. A CCTV footage accessed shows the car hitting the woman in a narrow lane and stopping. As the woman falls, passersby stop to help her. The driver then restarts his vehicle, runs over the woman, and drags her along for a short distance before speeding away. The visuals shown on the footage completely contradicts the police’s statements where they alleged that on being reprimanded for keeping their shop open beyond the curfew hours, the father-son duo verbally abused the police and started rolling on the road in front of their shop. The police had also alleged that the internal injuries suffered by the duo were due to their rolling on the ground.
