The Internship at Matter will involve working on ongoing architecture projects, active research initiatives and content publications from our studio in Goa.

Releasing next in the PRAXIS series is an episode featuring Samira Rathod Design Atelier!

In the twentieth episode, Samira Rathod of Samira Rathod Design Atelier discusses the systems and ideologies of their Mumbai-based practice along with Jay Shah and a few of her colleagues. The conversation elaborates on the multi-faceted nature of their projects across architecture, interior, furniture design. The studio works in parallel with their workshop and research arm to operate across this array of disciplines. Their processes are guided by an ethos rooted in iterative explorations, meticulous detailing and an articulation of sensorial compositions.

The second phase of the PRAXIS initiative features established practices in the domain of contemporary architecture in India. The series is curated by Matter in partnership with Şişecam Flat Glass. Stay tuned for more!

Through strategic designs, their studio places experiential architecture as a background for the surrounding context. Outlined in this conversation is a glimpse into their process and the thinking behind the studio's spatial, textured and meticulously detailed portfolio of work - furthering an understanding of facets such as materiality, technology, changing landscapes and the found terrain. Coming soon, the sixteenth episode in the PRAXIS series!

This episode features BL Manjunath, founder of Bengaluru-based Manjunath & Co Structural Consultants. As one of the few structural designers in the country, Manjunath stresses on the role that co-creation and co-authorship play in his practice. Comprising of a team of engineers and architects alike, the practice intends to cultivate a culture of collaborative learning and collective ownership. The processes in the practice are led by rigorous observation, with design being the driver and structure being the facilitator to achieve a holistic vision. As part of a founding collective, Manjunath instituted Wadiyar Centre for Architecture, Mysuru where he believes his interaction with students encourages a reciprocal exchange of learning.

In focus: SJK Architects, for the fifteenth episode of PRAXIS initiative.

In this episode, the four partners of Mumbai-based SJK Architects – Shimul Javeri Kadri, Vaishali Mangalvedhekar, Sarika Shetty and Roshni Kshirsagar, elaborate on a few central themes, core ideas and critical questions that shape the bounds of the work produced by the studio. The discussion dwells on the evolution of their partnership, their collective efforts to provide an expansive perspective for each project, and being attuned to wider conversations on materiality, craftpeopleships, gender and public realm.

Dr Balkrishna Doshi (1927 - 2023) - The flag of our discipline would fly at half-mast today. Amongst the few trailblazing modernists that worked in the fervor of the post-independence experiment in India, BV Doshi had a unique place.

Not only was he able to create moving experiences in the compelling examples of the built environment he sculpted, the impact of this work and thoughts as an architect, a professional, a thinker, a man of culture, and most importantly - a teacher who would forever continue to influence generations of architects in India.

Thousands of lives have been enriched by the institutions he built and many more would continue to benefit from the enormous contribution he has made to the discipline. We are forever indebted to him and our thoughts and prayers extend to his wonderful family and all the people who have been touched by the vastness of his spirit.

He will be remembered forever.

Featuring Kolkata-based Abin Design Studio, the fourteenth episode in the PRAXIS initiative is out now!

The practice focuses on pushing boundaries in both the public and the private realm. In this episode, Abin Chaudhuri provides an insight into the different trajectories that shaped the foundations and ethos of their interdisciplinary studio, and ideals that contribute towards creation of architecture and smaller infrastructures for different cultural, social and geographical contexts in rural and urban India alike.
