Two software engineers lost their lives when a Porsche driven by a 17-year-old collided with their bike in Pune. The incident has ignited public outrage over lenient regulations and underage driving. The young driver, who is the son of a well-known local builder, was just months away from legal driving age.

Following the accident, the boy’s father was detained, and proprietors of establishments that served the minor alcohol were also apprehended. Initially, the teen was granted bail under conditions including community service with traffic police and mandatory counseling. However, Pune Police have now petitioned the sessions court to try him as an adult under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which addresses drink driving.

If convicted, the teen faces up to six months in jail and a ₹10,000 fine for a first offence, escalating to two years imprisonment and a ₹15,000 fine for repeat offenses. Authorities are also pursuing a culpable homicide charge, which could result in more severe penalties. Additionally, the father faces charges under the Juvenile Justice Act for neglect and providing alcohol to a minor, potentially leading to significant jail time.

Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) pulled out a significant Rs 17,000 crore from Indian equities in early May, citing apprehensions surrounding the general election and pricey valuations. This marked a notable surge compared to the Rs 8,700 crore withdrawal in April. The uncertain political climate, coupled with a potential market correction, prompted cautious investor behavior.

Additionally, the US Federal Reserve's stance on interest rates and the strengthening US dollar contributed to FPIs' risk-off approach. Despite the outflow, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) remained consistent buyers throughout May. Notably, FPIs have withdrawn a net Rs 14,860 crore from equities in 2024 thus far, while showing continued interest in the debt market with investments totaling Rs 14,307 crore.

Analysts anticipate a shift in FPI sentiment post-election, contingent upon favorable outcomes and improved political stability.

An analysis in Pune by a fitness trainer of Everest’s Fish Curry Masala showed that ethylene oxide, a Group 1 carcinogen, was found 70 times more than the limit set by the EU! Yes, 70 times.

This responsibility lies with FSSAI, but instead, we Indians have to test our own food and then spread the message on social media.

Yoga guru Ramdev and Balkrishna extend their apology for misleading Patanjali ads, addressing Supreme Court concerns. The fresh apology, published in leading newspapers, rectifies previous shortcomings, now acknowledging non-compliance with court orders. Ramdev and Balkrishna express "unconditional" regret for the discrepancies in their advertisements, promising to rectify the errors moving forward.

During a contempt hearing, the Supreme Court questioned the adequacy of the apology's size compared to Patanjali's product advertisements. Ramdev and Balkrishna defended their actions, citing the placement of unqualified apologies in 67 newspapers, incurring a cost of Rs 10 lakh.

This development follows earlier directives from the Supreme Court to cease misleading claims and advertisements against modern medicine, reinforcing the importance of responsible advertising practices. Patanjali Ayurved reaffirms its commitment to promoting health responsibly, following past controversies.

World Earth Day is celebrated annually on 22 April. Check out its significance in preventing climate change -

World Earth Day, also known as International Mother Earth Day is celebrated every year on 22 April. The day is dedicated to raising awareness, and promoting sustainability of the planet earth. The main goal of recognizing the Earth Day is to highlight the need to preserve and protect our planet, which is the home to different life forms. It also emphasizes the role of sustainable practices and renewable energy sources in addressing climate change and promoting a circular economy.

It is high time that we take urgent action to address the climate crisis and protect our planet. This can be done by reducing carbon emissions, investing in renewable energy sources, and increasing the efforts towards sustainable agriculture and livestock production.

Earth Day is celebrated around the world in different ways. Some of the World Earth Day activities may include events, workshops, and online campaigns to promote environmental awareness and educate people about the importance of protecting Mother Earth.

World Earth Day 2024 Theme

The theme of Earth Day 2024 is 'Planet vs Plastics'. For Earth Day 2024 on 22 April, there is an unwavering commitment to end plastics for the sake of human and planetary health, demanding a 60% reduction in the production of ALL plastics by 2040, says earthday.org.

Importance of Earth Day in Addressing Climate Change

Celebrating Earth Day encourages people to participate in activities that can help in addressing issues responsible for climate change and environmental crisis. One of the best ways to put an end to climate change is by actively reducing the greenhouse gas emissions. This is a fundamental key to preventing the worst effects of climate change, and will require cooperation from both governments and individuals. There are plethora of measures that should be adopted to reduce the carbon footprints on planet earth such as:

Using renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power.

Driving less with an aim to promote energy conservation and recycling.

21/04/2024

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys and Wipro – India’s largest IT companies – saw declines in their headcount for the first time in a decade, The Hindu BusinessLine reported citing the IT giants’ annual reports.

According to PTI, TCS, Infosys and Wipro saw declines of 13,249 employees, 25,994 employees and 24,516 employees respectively during the 2023-2024 financial year.

The gloomy scenario is attributable to the slowdown being witnessed across the tech, consulting and other services sectors.

Indian IT firms, unlike major global tech companies, have not necessarily laid off employees but have reduced hiring to levels lower than the number of employees leaving them, BusinessLine‘s report said.

Its report added that IT firms decided to reduce costs by limiting hiring following a dip in discretionary tech spending in FY’24 after the Silicon Valley Bank collapsed last year.
