Dhaka, December 30: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia passed away early Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, the party said in a statement on social media platform Facebook.

She died at the age of 80.

The BNP said Khaleda Zia died at around 6 am (local time), shortly after the Fajr prayer. The party confirmed the news through posts on its verified page.

"Khaleda Zia passed away at around 6:00am, just after Fajr prayer," the BNP said. The party added, "We pray for the eternal peace of her soul and ask everyone to pray for her departed soul."

Begum Khaleda Zia was admitted to the capital Dhaka's Evercare Hospital on November 23 with a lung infection. The 80-year-old former Prime Minister has been suffering from various physical ailments, including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, liver cirrhosis, and kidney complications, for a long time.

Earlier this month, the former Bangladeshi PM was sent to London for advanced medical treatment for her ailments.

Her death comes at a crucial political moment, with Bangladesh preparing for national elections scheduled for February 2026 and amid heightened political tensions following last year's July Uprising.

The former prime minister's passing also follows the recent return of her son, BNP leader Tarique Rahman, to Bangladesh after years in exile.

Rahman left the country after being arrested in 2007-08 and later settled in London following his release. After the removal of Sheikh Hasina's government last year, he was acquitted in several cases filed during the Awami League period, clearing the way for his return.

Tarique Rahman arrived in Bangladesh last week and was welcomed by a large gathering of party leaders and supporters near the airport, in what was seen as a major political event ahead of the upcoming elections.

Following Tarique arrival in the country, he also visited her mother in the Evercare Hospital.

Further details regarding Khaleda Zia's funeral arrangements and official programmes are awaited.โ€“(ANI)

Srinagar, Dec 29,More than 7,000 trained dental surgeons in Jammu and Kashmir continue to remain unemployed as no regular recruitment has been carried out in the government sector for the past 17 years, raising serious concerns over career stagnation and underutilisation of skilled medical professionals.

According to details highlighted by dental professionals, despite the growing population and increasing oral health needs across the region, recruitment of dental surgeons has remained virtually frozen, leaving thousands of qualified graduates without government employment opportunities. Aspirants said the prolonged delay has pushed many young professionals into uncertainty, forcing some to migrate outside the region or abandon the profession altogether.

The issue has also been mentioned in political discourse. The National Conference, in its manifesto for the 2024 elections, had promised time-bound recruitment of dental surgeons, acknowledging that the matter has remained pending for over a decade. The commitment raised hopes among unemployed dental graduates, who say tangible action is now urgently required.

Dental surgeons said the absence of regular recruitment has adversely impacted public healthcare delivery, particularly in rural and peripheral areas where dental services remain limited or non existent. They said timely appointments would not only address unemployment but also strengthen oral healthcare infrastructure in government hospitals and primary health centres.

The unemployed professionals have urged the government to initiate immediate recruitment drives, frame a clear policy for absorption of dental surgeons and fulfil assurances made regarding time-bound appointments. They said continued delay would further aggravate unemployment and deprive the public of essential dental healthcare services.

The dental community has appealed to the government to intervene without further delay and ensure that qualified professionals are given an opportunity to serve within the public health system.

29 Dec:
Mostly dry and cloudy weather.
Very light snow possible over Zojila-Drass axis.

30 Dec:
A fresh Western Disturbance is expected to bring light to moderate snow, mainly in Kashmir Valley. The activities are particularly expected between afternoon and the next day morning.
In case precipitation persists during night, chances of light snow over plains is also possible (40% chance). (Models however aren't very supportive of snow over most plains.)

31 Dec - 01 Jan:
Mostly cloudy conditions will prevail across Jammu and Kashmir, with light to moderate rain/snow showers. While the system remains weak and good snow accumulation over plains is unlikely, the falling temperatures compared to earlier days will improve snow chances. As a result, snowfall in a few plain areas cannot be ruled out. (Still under monitoring)

02 - 05 Jan:
Dry weather is expected.

New Delhi, Dec 29: To benefit genuine passengers, the train ticket booking window for the Aadhaar-linked IRCTC users will change from Monday i.e. December 29 on the Advance Reservation Period (ARP) day.

As per the new rule, the Indian Railways has also made Aadhaar verification a prerequisite for booking general reservation tickets on the first day of the advance reservation period through the IRCTC portal.

The revised update will come into effect on January 12.

Earlier, the national transporter had made Aadhaar-based verification mandatory for booking reserved train tickets through the IRCTC website or app during the first 15 minutes of the opening of general reservations. Later, Aadhaar authentication was extended to the morning hours - from 8 AM to 10 AM - on the first day of reserved ticket booking.

As per a report by Indian Express, the Indian Railways has now decided to expand Aadhaar-authenticated bookings for general reservations on the opening day, extending the window until 12 PM from December 29.

Earlier, IRCTC mandated Aadhaar-based verification for booking reserved train tickets through the IRCTC website or app during the first 15 minutes of the general reservations opening.

Later, this requirement was extended to the morning hours from 8 AM to 10 AM on the first day of reserved ticket booking.

Additionally, the national transporter plans to gradually extend the Aadhaar-authenticated ticket booking window until 12 midnight in a phased manner.

Srinagar, Dec 28, National Conference (NC) President Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Sunday defended the detention of leaders after a student protest on reservation issues in Jammu and Kashmir was foiled, while the partyโ€™s spokesperson and legislator Tanvir Sadiq criticized authorities for placing Srinagar MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi under house arrest and detaining student leaders.

The protest, which was scheduled for today at 11 AM in Srinagar, could not take place as security forces blocked gatherings following the detention of JKNC MP Ruhullah Mehdi and other leaders.

Responding to a question about the house arrest of several leaders after their planned protest over reservation was foiled, Abdullah in Pahalgam said his government is focused on development and stability in the Valley, but some leaders are uncomfortable with the ongoing progress and seek unrest.

โ€œThey donโ€™t like that the government is progressing. They want turmoil in the Valley. We wonโ€™t let that happen,โ€ he said, adding that turning the reservation issue into street conflict or political tension would not benefit society.

Abdullah emphasized that the government should be questioned on demands rather than pushed toward unrest. โ€œTell those leaders what are they asking for? Our government is doing its best,โ€ he said.

He urged youth to remain united and move forward peacefully, highlighting harmony, brotherhood, and friendship.

In contrast, Tanvir Sadiq condemned the detention of student leaders and Ruhullah Mehdiโ€™s house arrest, calling the move โ€œdeeply troublingโ€ and โ€œunjustified.โ€

He questioned why earlier protests directed at the elected government were allowed while todayโ€™s peaceful demonstration, related to a pending Cabinet decision at Raj Bhavan, was suppressed. โ€œLetโ€™s be clear: we did not stop students from exercising their legitimate democratic right to protest when the anger was directed towards the elected government. And we will not abandon them now simply because their peaceful protest is directed at Lok Bhavan,โ€ Sadiq said.

Sadiq added that the NC government had delivered a report on rationalizing reservation quotas promptly, transparently, and in good faith, and stressed that studentsโ€™ democratic rights must be safeguarded.
