Nagaland Police Urge Public To Stop Sharing Unverified Claims On Zao Murd€r
Kohima, Nov 6 (WE THE NAGAS): The Nagaland Police has issued a stringent public advisory warning social media users, content creators, and media outlets against spreading misinformation related to the ongoing investigation into the murd€r of 22-year-old Vihozhonu Zao, who was found d€ad on October 24, 2025.
In the notice, police expressed concern over the rapid spread of unverified claims, speculative narratives, and fabricated information circulating across various social media platforms. The police stressed that such actions constitute serious offenses under Indian law, including the Information Technology Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 dealing with defamation, public mischief, spreading hatred, and obstruction of lawful investigation.
The advisory clearly warns the public NOT to share unverified content, speculate on motives or suspects, defame individuals not named by the authorities, or attempt to link the crime to any community or ethnicity without evidence. Police said that violators could face immediate arrest, criminal prosecution, and imprisonment.
Emphasizing responsible online behaviour, police has urged citizens to verify information from official sources before sharing, report malicious posts, and respect the privacy of the grieving family.
The police reiterated that the notice serves as the final warning to the public as the investigation continues.
