🍁 What was August like for you? Answer the poll 👇

For me, August was a month for quiet contemplation, amidst difficult circumstances.

A time for reflection, as I reached an epiphany of sorts and looked back at all that I achieved despite everything.

🧥This tapestry jacket is one of my favourite new possessions for fall. There’s just something about the vintage aesthetic that keeps drawing me back. Perhaps, because I crave a life that isn’t this frenzied, fast-paced and demanding? A slower time, when immediacy was less important, and time to oneself easier to get. 🍁🍂

SWIPE ➡️ This is my mom . She brought my brother and I up, worked at the WHO for 35 years and had a side hustle before the term was invented, training thousands of women to be their best selves and success in life and in work with the Springboard program.
In the early days of Sartorial Secrets, she was co-author of the blog from Delhi. Now, she styles her saris in creative ways and shares them online.
She’s the reason I love colors and discovered ways to dress elegantly; she’s the woman who taught me to be resilient in the face of struggle, the woman who taught me to keep working hard, to never stop holding on to hope. I'm inspired by her hard work and self-belief now, as a co-founder, a marketing professional and a creator.
Our relationship is complex and many-layered, much like the intricate designs on her saris. This post is dedicated to her this mother’s day ❤️

🙏 Rest well, Nana 💔
We never imagined you would be gone so soon.
it's hard to imagine your house without you, to play Scrabble without remembering your fiery, competitive spirit in every match, to head down to the bustle of the market without fond memories of you buying me comics and getting our fave samosas and that wholesome laughter that faded a lot after Nani left this world, and now you've gone back to her ❤️

You’re gone, but you’ll always be here.

In the big, warm smile I see in my mother's face; in my gray-streaked hair everytime I catch a glimpse in the mirror; in my own spirit for adventure and independence; in my mom's unwavering strength and quiet stoicism; in my aunt's firmness tempered with love; in the kindness we feel towards animals, also your legacy and in the photographs that immortalize you with us, like this one of me, in an orange onesie, just learning to walk, and you chasing after me!
I love you. We all do.
Rest in peace. I imagine you sitting peacefully on the sofa somewhere beyond, engrossed in another Scrabble match with Nani, and Flash and Dheet playing at your feet ❤️

👇Let’s talk about beauty standards!
In the early 00s they were even more unrealistic than they are now.
☢️ We internalized that pin-straight hair, washboard abs with barely any hips and overplucked eyebrows were the way to being considered ‘beautiful’.

🚫 I was skinny as a kid, but I was ‘too tall’.
🚫 My frizzy hair was ‘ugly’.
🚫I was bullied for being ‘flat-chested’.
🚫My body hair was ‘gross’ and I was expected to get rid of all of it at barely 13 years old.
‼️And our worth was measured by how many guys asked us out.
With no real positive role models, it’s no wonder we grew up with a bad body image!

But you know what?
🌸 Beauty isn’t a currency you need in order to exist in this world.
No one gets to define what you are, through these shallow parameters.
🌸 Today, I’m still learning but so much more at peace - using products created for my wavy hair instead of trying to turn it straight.
🌸 I’ve never plucked my eyebrows in my whole life and don’t plan to.
🌸 I don’t get weird and conscious if my body hair grows back anymore.
🌸 I don’t use filters on my no makeup pics.
🌸 I focus more on creating healthy habits than on buying products that sell insecurity.
✅ I want to be strong and healthy rather than conform to unrealistic standards. And I love my body so much more.
✨ Let me invite you to really examine your own internalised biases and insecurities about how you look.
I want you to remember, that you are loved, and that your self-worth is NOT tied to how much you conform to stereotypes.
Love,
Nan 💜

My outfit from a lovely evening recently - swipe for more from the event.

I attended the launch of written by Samuel Gebre and illustrated by Alix Fresson at the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Netherlands, Her Excellency Marisa Gerards' residence in Delhi.

📚 The book features beautiful illustrations accompanied by poems, of Delhi's finest landmarks and is the perfect gift to give anyone when they visit the city. Highly recommended :)

📚 In a personal first time ever, a quote from me appears on the blurb at the back as .bibliotherapy :)

🎭 We also experienced a wonderful performance in traditional Tamil folk performance art by P Rajagopal and Dr Hanne De Bruin from the Kattaikuttu Sangam.
