India's first Olympic field hockey tournament was a historic moment. India, then part of the British Empire, not only participated but also emerged victorious, setting the stage for a dominant run until 1980. At the heart of this success was the legendary Dhyan Chand.

Born on 29 August 1905, in Allahabad, Dhyan Chand, an army officer, earned the nicknames "the wizard" and "the magician" for his extraordinary hockey skills. His journey began in 1928 at the Amsterdam Olympics.

Playing alongside a talented Indian team, Chand’s 'magical' abilities were on full display throughout the tournament. The team remained undefeated, scoring 26 goals without conceding a single one.

The final against the Netherlands was a tense affair in front of a packed stadium. Chand’s two goals in the second half sealed India’s 3-0 victory.

His contribution was immense, netting 14 goals throughout the tournament, including crucial strikes in the final. So remarkable was his performance that Dutch officials reportedly disassembled his hockey stick, convinced it contained a hidden magnet.

Chand's legacy extends far beyond his Olympic victories. Over his 22-year career, he scored over 400 international goals, including 35 at the Games.

In recognition of his extraordinary achievements, India celebrates National Sports Day on his birth anniversary, 29 August.
