Turtles are considered lucky in Assam, but their population was constantly reducing due to climate change. Pranab noticed that turtle eggs were breaking prematurely and took it upon himself to protect them until they were ready to hatch. Through his dedication, he successfully nurtured almost 100 turtles, filling temples and parks across Assam with these fortunate creatures. Pranab's story exemplifies that anyone, not just scientists, can make a difference in saving animals with patience and persistence.

Edited by the brilliant @deep_thi Climate change impact: Assam, like many other regions, is facing the consequences of climate change. Rising global temperatures have led to changes in weather patterns, causing extreme events like floods and heatwaves. Frequent flooding: Assam experiences severe floods almost every year, primarily during the monsoon season. Heavy rainfall, combined with the melting of Himalayan glaciers, leads to swollen rivers and extensive inundation. Devastating consequences: The annual floods in Assam have devastating effects, causing loss of lives, damaging homes, infrastructure, and agriculture. It displaces thousands of people, leading to a humanitarian crisis. Erosion and riverbank collapse: The increased frequency of floods has also contributed to riverbank erosion, leading to the loss of land, property, and livelihoods of communities living along riverbanks. Impact on biodiversity: Floods can disrupt the ecosystem, affecting wildlife and biodiversity. Many endangered species, including the one-horned rhinoceros, are at risk due to loss of habitat and displacement. Heatwaves and extreme temperatures: Climate change has also brought about more frequent and intense heatwaves in Assam. High temperatures exacerbate health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations like the elderly and children. Impact on agriculture: Erratic weather patterns and unpredictable rainfall affect agriculture in Assam, a state heavily dependent on farming. Crop yields are affected, leading to economic losses for farmers. Water scarcity: Paradoxically, while Assam experiences severe floods, there are also regions facing water scarcity due to changing rainfall patterns. This creates a challenging situation for water resource management. Increasing vulnerability: The annual recurrence of floods and heatwaves is amplifying the vulnerability of communities in Assam. They are exposed to repeated shocks, making it harder to recover and build resilience.
