Leaked Audio Tape Case, Manipur

The Supreme Court has directed a fresh re-examination of the alleged N. Biren Singh audio tapes by the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, after rejecting an earlier "misdirected" report from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL). The case was last listed for a hearing on August 25, 2025.
Case Background
Allegations: A petition was filed by the Kuki Organisation for Human Rights Trust (KOHUR) in the Supreme Court, claiming that an audio recording made by a whistleblower implicated then-Chief Minister N. Biren Singh in instigating ethnic violence in Manipur. The petitioner sought a court-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the matter.
Previous Forensic Reports: A private lab, Truth Labs, submitted a report to the petitioner with a 93% probability that the voice in the recording matched Biren Singh's. However, the CFSL's report was ambiguous, acknowledging a resemblance but claiming the tapes were "tampered" with, a finding that the Supreme Court criticized as "misdirected" and lacking credibility.
Court's Stance: The Supreme Court has insisted on forensic rigour and an unimpeachable report, stating that no person should be protected if found to have engaged in wrongdoing.
Current Status: The NFSU is now tasked with a comprehensive re-examination of the audio clips. The matter was last in court on August 25, 2025, and the court is awaiting the results of this new forensic analysis. Biren Singh has since resigned as Chief Minister in February 2025.
