If this Reuters report is true, the army (BSF) officer is a LIAR. Which is true? It also begs a question: “What is the politically and morally correct ‘mandate’ of a Jawan, army officer? Where are the Assam Rifles?”

Reuters report: “The Indian Army and federal paramilitary forces in the state cannot act independently and are legally bound to work with state police and authorities, who analysts say are also divided along ethnic lines. Kukis also accuse Biren Singh, the chief minister of the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled state and a Meitei, of complicity in violence against them and have sought his removal. Singh denies the accusations.”

Manipur violence: Notes, January 2025
“What is the politically and morally correct mandate of central forces in Manipur violence? Where are the Assam Rifles?”

1. May 3, 2024: Tribal Unity March organized by all Manipur tribes including Manipur Nagas resulted in unprecedented ethnic violence between majority Meitei community and Kuki-ZO ethnic groups. The first bullet or use of unthinkable atrocities was perpetrated by Meitei goons under the leadership of Arambai Tengol and Meitei pride group Meitei Leepun. It is pertinent to mention that the atrocities were targeted at a selected community, the Kuki-ZO group. The killings of Kuki-ZO residents of Imphal valley were in retaliation to a ruse, a false rumor about Meitei students being sexually assaulted in Churachandpur medical college.

2. Under the influence of traditional religion, Sanamahism, with the explicit or implicit support of the higher echelons of power, religious minorities became the victims. The 100s of churches torched and burnt to the ground is self-evidence that religion including Meitei Christians are victims. Truth must be told, fully, no half-baked politically influenced agendas will solve the problem. The original religion of the Meitei people was Sanamahism, an indigenous faith that is part of the whole story.

3. 100s were killed and tens of thousands became internally displaced people. Status-quo had been maintained until the removal of neutral central forces who were removed or replaced with Meitei centric central forces. These central forces were allegedly under the direct command of the Meitei commandos who follows the whims and wishes of Meitei pride groups, Arambai Tengol, Meitei Leepun, and the Meira Paibis. What will be the mandate of such forces stationed in Kuki-ZO villages? Should the mandate of neutral forces of the central be, the people they are stationed with and meant to protect or petty political whims of some vested interests? Why were the Assam Rifles replaced/ removed from Manipur?

4. Fast forward to January 2025, the suspicions of the Kuki-ZO proved to be true: the Meitei-centric central forces were accused of committing attrocities against the Kuki-ZO women folks. Times of India (sic): “Kuki-Zo organisations have been demonstrating against the alleged baton charge on women by security forces on Dec 31 in Saibol village. The Committee on Tribal Unity has been protesting against the deployment of central forces at Saibol village by calling a 12-hour shutdown in the district.”
