With growing wealth disparity across the world, the idea of higher tax rates for the super rich is cropping up in EU. According to Oxfam, a total of USD 42 trillion in new wealth has been created since 2020, with USD 26 trillion, or 63 per cent, of that being amassed by the top 1 per cent of the ultra-rich, and the remaining 99 per cent of the global population collected just USD 16 trillion of new wealth.

In India, wealth tax was done away with in 2016 as the amount collected was much less than Rs 1000 crore. But the rich are growing richer rapidly, keeping the discussions life. Just to get a hang of the tax potential, the minimum overall taxable wealth is about Rs 150 trillion. A 2 per cent levy would yield the government about Rs 3 trillion in taxes.

Is it not time for consciousness to "Woke" up?

Recent reports on climate change emphasize the urgency of our situation. We need to limit emissions to 510 GtCO2 to achieve net zero by 2050, but with our current business-as-usual approach, we will end up emitting 850 GtCO2.

Without concerted efforts of all, we will worsen the situation further.

Dr Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan, widely considered to be the father of the Green Revolution in India, is no more. He was closely associated with Industrial Economist Magazine. His unassuming nature and soft voice masked his drive and intellect and those came out in full force multiple times when he rallied an august group of CEOs and academic heads into decision making mode.

While he increased agriculture productivity manifold, he was always stressing on the need to create an evergreen revolution.
