As we celebrate Women's History Month, it is important to recognize the contributions of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. One such contribution is the discovery of CRISPR-Cas9, a revolutionary gene editing tool that has the potential to revolutionize medicine and agriculture.

CRISPR-Cas9 was first discovered in 2012 by Jennifer Doudna, a biochemist and molecular biologist, and Emmanuelle Charpentier, a microbiologist. Their work in understanding the bacterial immune system led them to discover the CRISPR-Cas9 system, which allows scientists to edit DNA with unprecedented precision.
The discovery of CRISPR-Cas9 has the potential to transform medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology. It allows scientists to make precise changes to DNA, opening up new possibilities for treating genetic diseases, developing new crops that are resistant to pests and diseases, and creating new materials with unique properties.

In addition to her work on CRISPR-Cas9, Doudna has also been a champion for diversity and equity in science. She co-founded the Innovative Genomics Institute, which aims to make gene editing accessible and equitable for all. She has also advocated for greater representation of women and underrepresented minorities in STEM fields.

Charpentier, who is now the director of the Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens in Germany, has also been a trailblazer for women in science. She has spoken out about the need for more women in leadership positions in academia and has been a strong advocate for equal opportunities in STEM.

The discovery of CRISPR-Cas9 is a testament to the importance of diversity and collaboration in science. Doudna and Charpentier's breakthrough would not have been possible without their unique perspectives and expertise. As we continue to make strides in science and technology, it is crucial that we continue to support and celebrate the contributions of women and other underrepresented groups in STEM fields.

Attention everyone! A recent study conducted by Tehran University of Medical Sciences hospitals found that Methicillin-Resistance Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is prevalent in patients hospitalized in the ICU, NICU, and surgical departments. The study analyzed 430 clinical samples, and 117 (27.20%) Staphylococcus Aureus were isolated, of which 42 (35.89%) were identified as MRSA. The research found that MRSA was 100% sensitive to vancomycin and linezolid, but 100% resistant to cloxacillin. This can lead to treatment failures, uncontrolled nosocomial infections, and mortality. The study suggests that a combination of conventional and PCR-based diagnostic methods can provide diagnostic accuracy. Stay safe, stay healthy, and take necessary precautions to avoid such infections.

Beyond the Manuscript: The Essential Role of Peer Review in Advancing Scientific Discovery

As researchers, we all want to ensure that our work is as accurate and reliable as possible. That's where the peer review process comes in. Peer review is an essential step in the scientific process that helps to ensure the quality of research by subjecting it to the scrutiny of experts in the field.

So, what exactly is peer review? In a nutshell, it's a process where a researcher's work is reviewed by other experts in the field before it's published. This review process helps to identify any errors or issues in the research, as well as providing feedback to the researcher to help them improve their work.

The peer review process typically involves three main parties: the author(s) of the paper being reviewed, the editor of the journal where the paper is being submitted, and the reviewer(s) who evaluate the paper. The process starts with the author(s) submitting their paper to the editor, who then sends the paper out to one or more reviewers for evaluation.

The reviewers are typically experts in the same field as the author(s), and they are tasked with evaluating the paper for accuracy, reliability, and overall quality. They may identify issues with the research design, data analysis, or interpretation of results, among other things. Based on their evaluation, the reviewers provide feedback to the author(s) and make a recommendation to the editor about whether the paper should be accepted, rejected, or revised and resubmitted.

The peer review process can be a lengthy and challenging process, both for the author(s) and the reviewers. However, it's an essential step in ensuring that the research being conducted is accurate, reliable, and of high quality. It also helps to establish a standard of excellence in the field and ensures that the results of research are trustworthy and can be relied upon by other researchers.

At its core, peer review is a collaborative process that helps to advance scientific knowledge and understanding. By subjecting research to the scrutiny of other experts in the field, we can be sure that we are moving in the right direction and making progress towards a better understanding of the world around us.

So, the next time you're asked to review a paper, or you're submitting your own work for review, remember that you're a part of a vital process that helps to ensure the quality and reliability of scientific research. By working together, we can continue to push the boundaries of knowledge and make progress towards a better future.

As healthcare professionals, we understand the importance of addressing the full range of impacts that traumatic events can have on patients. Craniomaxillofacial trauma, in particular, can have significant psychological and psychiatric implications that are often overlooked. This is a problem that requires our attention and a solution that addresses the needs of these patients.

Recently, a retrospective study was conducted to assess the incidence and severity of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in 378 patients who were treated for craniomaxillofacial trauma at a tertiary care centre over a five-year period. The study aimed to understand the predictors and predisposing factors for PTSD and to analyse the management protocols and outcomes achieved.

The results were concerning: 31% of the patients were found to have PTSD and were diagnosed accordingly. The study revealed that patients who sustained self-inflicted maxillofacial trauma had the highest risk of developing PTSD, followed by victims of natural disasters, combat-associated trauma (blast and ballistic injuries), and then physical assault and RTA victims. Based on the severity of PTSD symptoms, patients were treated with a combination of counselling, psychotherapy, and/or pharmacotherapy.

The findings of this study emphasize the need for careful screening of craniomaxillofacial trauma patients for symptoms of PTSD. Timely and effective management of PTSD can significantly contribute to the successful rehabilitation of these vulnerable patients. Surgical management of orofacial injuries should be integrated with case management that addresses psychosocial sequelae. This not only involves restoring the anatomy and function but also providing psychiatric support and therapy for patients experiencing symptoms of PTSD.

In conclusion, it is essential for healthcare professionals to understand the impact of craniomaxillofacial trauma on mental health and to address the needs of these patients effectively. Let's work together to ensure that every patient receives the care and support they need to fully recover from traumatic events.

This review aims to summarize the current literature on the topic, focusing on clinical presentation, pathogenesis, surgical and radiologic management and innovative therapies. The research included a comprehensive search of Pubmed and SCOPUS databases, yielding insights on the implications of pathogenesis, surgical management and complications, role of radiation and potential of ultrasound-guided microwave ablation in treating these unique clinical entities. For patients presenting with a slowly growing neck mass and possible radicular symptoms, it's crucial to consider cervical schwannomas as a diagnosis. The typical surgical approach involves a posterior approach for gross total resection. However, for complicated cases, radiation therapy and microwave ablation may also be reasonable alternatives that require further research.
