People promoting the so-called Rajbongshi language in lower Assam districts are actually backing a political cause. They are least concerned about ST status for the community. According to sources, they are misleading the youngsters to opt for SC status instead.

But Koches have their distinct Koch language, culture and traditions. The 1993 and 1994 TRI and RGI reports were unbiased. Koches of Assam had their ST status based on these reports back in 1996.

Note : Rajbanshis in West Bengal are mostly converted Koches. They are Scheduled Caste.

We are Koches of Assam. We have our own language and culture. We are not Rabhas. Most of our people have converted themselves to Rajbongshis and now they call themselves as Koch Rajbongshi. Also some of our people have become Rabhas for getting ST status and they call themselves as Kocha-Rabhas. Because of all these socio-cultural changes, our Koch tribe is now at a serious threat of social and cultural aggressions. Even though we have everything of our own, today we are unrecognised and we are losing everything. If we do not become conscious about our language, culture and identity, we will get extinct. According to UNESCO 2010 report, Koch is an endangered language with only minimal number of speakers. Most of the Koches today either use Assamese or Bengali languages.

Very warmful thanks to Koch Development Forum for presenting so beautifully the Hoko Dance of the Koches in Kendriya Bisuwa Utsav yesterday i.e 21st April, 2022. The cultural legacies of the koches will only be more vehement when the primitive cultures that were left behind years ago gets revived and we build again one great koch society.
