When we talk about the Mahabharat, we fondly recall Shree Krishna, Arjun , and Yudhisther. And then there are the Kauravas, the bad guys. The character we talk about the least is Karna - the ill-fated guy, the low-born king and the man who was accidentally cursed several times. But the role of Karnaโs in the Mahabharata is important all the same. We bring you 10 lesser known stories about the โsuryaputraโ, proving he was nothing less than a hero.

Hereโs why :
Once, Arjun asked Shree Krishna why he called Yudhishtira, Dharamaraj, and Karna, Daanveer. To answer this question, Krishna disguised himself and Arjun as Brahmins and decided to visit both the kings. On visiting Yudhish*tra, they asked for sandalwood to cook food. It was raining heavily at the time, and Yudhish*tra couldnโt find dry sandalwood suitable to be used as a fuel. He apologised to both of them, and they returned empty handed.
A little later, they went to Karna and asked for the same thing. Karna searched everywhere for dry sandalwood but failed. But he did not let the Brahmins go home empty handed. He picked up his bow and arrow and destroyed the doors made of sandalwood. This, he gave to Krishna and Arjun.

Rishi Parusharam ji cursed Karna for deceiving him. Karna had claimed he was a Brahmin, which was a lie. He had lied so that he could learn archery from the greatest teacher of all time. But it backfired. In reality however, Parusharam ji knew about Karnaโs true heritage. But he also knew the big picture that would be played out later.

After Karna's coronation as Angh Raj, he spent most of his time with Duryodhana. They would play a game of dice in the evening. One day after sunset, Duryodhana had to leave momentarily. His wife Bhanumati, who was passing by, saw Karna waiting for her husband and decided to continue her husbandโs game. At some point they had a casual quarrel about whose turn it was next. Playfully, Karna tried to sn**ch the dice from her hand. While they were wriggling, Bhanumati's dress shifted out of place, and her pearl necklace broke. The pearls scattered everywhere on the floor. At that instant, Duryodhan entered and found his wife with his friend in a compromising position, with their clothes entangled and pearls all over the floor. Duryodhana asked Karna what the quarrelling was for. Upon knowing the reason he cracked a joke and laughed aloud and continued playing.

In fact, even Arjun couldnโt defeat Karna all by himself. During the war of Kurukshetra, Krishna and Indra helped the Pandavas kill Karna. The former entered the battlefield as a charioteer for Arjuna, while Indra took away the armor from Karna, clearing the way for Arjuna.

Before the war, Krishna confronted Karna and told him how he was the eldest of the Pandavas, and the rightful heir to the throne; not Yudhishthir. Although Karna was elated after he found out that Kunti was his mother and Surya his father, he refused to join ranks with Pandavas, because of his friendship and loyalty towards Duryodhan. In true terms, Karna was the the only one who followed dharma throughout his life.

In the middle of the war, Krishna even told Arjun that Karna was indeed a real warrior, and far better than him. Karna reminds us of the saying โTough times never last, but tough people do.โ

In the war, all Karna's sons, except one, were killed by the Pandavas. Despite being the greatest warrior of all time, he was helpless. Karna's life went through various waves of tragedy and sacrifice alternately. He was destroyed by the wrong attitude, because he wanted to be somebody he wasnโt. He knew what Duryodhan was doing was wrong, but he was an active participant who supported Duryodhan endlessly. Karna was all for loyalty and gratitude.

According to Krishna, in order to avoid the war, he had requested Karna to become the king. He argued that Karna, being elder to both Yudhisthir and Duryodhan, would be the rightful heir to the throne. But Karna refused the offer.

Shree Krishna asked Karna how he knew that the Pandavas would win the war, to which he replied, "Kurukshetra is a sacrificial field. Arjun is the Head Priest, you - Krishna are the presiding deity. Myself (Karna), Bhishma Dev, Dronacharya and Duryodhan are the sacrifice.โ Krishna ended their conversation by telling Karna, โYou are the best of the Pandavas.โ

Shree Krishna created Karna to show the world the true meaning of sacrifice, and how one should accept their fate. Despite bad luck or bad times, he continued to believe in spirituality, generosity, humility, dignity and self-respect, and remained respectful towards his loved ones.

Karna was the son of Kunti, who was also the mother of the Pandavas. Being born as a blessing from Lord Surya Dev, he is today known as Surya Putra Karna (the son of Sun). Stories abound telling about his bravery. His own father Surya Dev had given him a Kavach (armor), by the virtue of which nobody could ever defeat him. However, the stories about his generous heart too are not less popular. Because of this, he is also known as Danveer Karna - the brave donor Karna.
๐ฆ๐๐ฟ๐๐ฎ ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ช๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ป๐ฎ
According to one such story, he used to water the Sun God every day. It is said that he would give away anything he might ask him for, as a donation. We know that Arjun and Karna were enemies in the battle of Mahabharat. Both of them were equally good in the art of warship.
But because of the Kavach that Sun God had given, Karna had an edge over him. With a fear in his heart, Indra Dev decided to appear before Karna while he would be offering water to Sun, the next time and ask him for the Kavach as a donation.
When Surya Dev came to know about Indra Dev's intentions, he tried to warn Karna and told him not to offer him water the next time. But Karna would neither agree to break his principles nor be the one to not pay respect to Sun God by choosing not to offer him water, for the fear of donation.

He again reached the banks of the river early morning and there Indra Dev disguised as a Brahmin (priest) came to Karna, after he had finished offering the water to Sun God. Indra Dev asked him for his Kavach, which Karna happily gave away. However, Indra Dev was impressed by his generosity, in return of which he gave a divine Astra (weapon), which he could use for his protection but only once.

This incident became a major factor for his defeat at the hands of Arjun . While fighting the battle, Karna used the divine weapon given by Indra Dev, much before he got the chance to fight with Arjun. Hence, he faced defeat at Arjun's hands. However, his devotion for the Almighty, his good deeds throughout his life and his dedication for righteousness were unparalleled, which became the major cause why he was so dear to Lord Vishnu.

Hurt at his defeat, Lord Krishna appeared before him and asked him for his last wishes. Karna asked him for three promises, which were as mentioned below.
