In 1989, the Tinanmen Square protests in Beijing, called for political reforms  freedom of speech, and an end to corruption. The hunger strikes initiated on 13 May 1989, were peaceful demonstrations.

However, on June 3-4 Chinese government deployed troops, tanks  leading to a violent crackdown with an unknown number if casualties. The event remains heavily censored in China, but it had a profound symbol of the struggle for democracy and human rights.

On 13 April 1919, The Jallianwala Bagh massacre, also known as the Amritsar massacre, took place in the city of Amritsar in Punjab, India. Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer and his troops had blocked the entrance to Jallianwala Bagh, a public garden, and without warning, opened fire on the unarmed civilians who had gathered there to peacefully protest British colonial rule.

The brutal incident resulted in the deaths of around 400 people and left more than 1,000 injured. The massacre shocked the Indian public and galvanized the Indian independence movement, leading to increased protests and civil unrest throughout the country.

The British government faced severe criticism both within India and internationally for the massacre, and Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer was subsequently relieved of his duties. However, the Jallianwala Bagh massacre remains a stark reminder of the brutalities of colonialism and the struggle for independence in India.
