The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the Multi-State Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill, which seeks to strengthen cooperatives by making their functioning more transparent, introducing a system of regular elections and prohibiting appointment of related persons.

Amit Shah said the provisions in the bill will initiate a new era for the sector, which has been ignored by the previous governments.

Bill Ray’s celebrated picture of Marilyn Monroe onstage at the old Madison Square Garden, singing “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy during 19 May 1962 birthday gala in his honor, remains one of the all-time great celebrity portraits.

In retrospect, it also feels absolutely charged with pathos: Marilyn, after all, would be dead within months of the picture being made, while JFK’s assassination in November 1963 was less than a year and half away.

A title and office used by the House of Bonaparte starting when Napoleon was proclaimed Emperor on 18 May by the Senate and was crowned Emperor of the French on 2 December 1804 at the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, in Paris, with the Crown of Napoleon.

The title emphasised that the Emperor ruled over "the French people" and not iver France, the state.

The date of 17 May was chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.

Homosexuality was widely considered an abomination and to be against the laws of nature around the world for thousands of years.

The first Mickey Mouse short, “Plane Crazy,” was released on May 15, 1928. The cartoon was not a success. The second short, “The Gallopin’ Gaucho,” was also not successful. However, the third Mickey Mouse short, “Steamboat Willie,” was a huge success. It was the first cartoon to feature synchronized sound and it quickly became one of the most popular cartoons of all time.

Mickey Mouse has appeared in over 130 shorts and features since his debut in 1928. He has also appeared in comics, books, television shows, and video games.

Mother's Day is a holiday celebrated worldwide to honour and appreciate mothers and motherhood. It falls on the second Sunday in May.

The modern celebration originated in the early 20th century when activist Anna Jarvis campaigned for a day to honour mother's, leading to its official recognition in the United States in 1914.

In 1989, the Tinanmen Square protests in Beijing, called for political reforms  freedom of speech, and an end to corruption. The hunger strikes initiated on 13 May 1989, were peaceful demonstrations.

However, on June 3-4 Chinese government deployed troops, tanks  leading to a violent crackdown with an unknown number if casualties. The event remains heavily censored in China, but it had a profound symbol of the struggle for democracy and human rights.

In 1953, Ernest Hemingway was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his novella "The Old  Man and the Sea". The story is about an elderly fisherman who takes on a challenging fishing expedition in the Gulf Stream near Cuba.

The book is known for its uncomplicated yet impactful language and explores themes such as perseverance and confrontation.

On April 20, 1951, Dan Gavriliu, a Romanian surgeon, performed the first total surgical replacement of the human oesophagus by using sections of stomach to bypass damaged or deformed tissue.
However, other than describing his procedure in the scientific literature, Gavriliu did not write extensively about his research owing to his inability to pay the publication fees.

On 19 April 1987, a short film featuring a very peculiar yellow family, ‘The Simpsons’, was broadcast for the first time in the United States. Created by the cartoonist Matt Groening, ‘The Simpsons’ is a satirical adventure of a working class family in Springfield.

It wasn’t until 17 December 1989, however, that it began to be broadcast as a series by Fox Broadcasting Company.

On 16 April 2003, Michael Jordan played his last NBA game which marked the end of an era in NBA history. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He won six NBA championships, five MVP awards, and was a 14-time All-Star during his career. Jordan retired from basketball in 1999, but returned in 2001 to play for the Wizards. Despite his age and declining physical abilities, Jordan remained a formidable player, averaging 20 points per game in his final season.

The project's completion marked a significant milestone in the field of genetics and genomics, providing researchers with a comprehensive reference sequence of the human genome. This has enabled the development of new diagnostics, therapies, and insights into the genetic basis of disease.

On 13 April 1919, The Jallianwala Bagh massacre, also known as the Amritsar massacre, took place in the city of Amritsar in Punjab, India. Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer and his troops had blocked the entrance to Jallianwala Bagh, a public garden, and without warning, opened fire on the unarmed civilians who had gathered there to peacefully protest British colonial rule.

The brutal incident resulted in the deaths of around 400 people and left more than 1,000 injured. The massacre shocked the Indian public and galvanized the Indian independence movement, leading to increased protests and civil unrest throughout the country.

The British government faced severe criticism both within India and internationally for the massacre, and Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer was subsequently relieved of his duties. However, the Jallianwala Bagh massacre remains a stark reminder of the brutalities of colonialism and the struggle for independence in India.
