✨ In this episode of Matrimandir & I, we meet Paula.

Her journey began in 1971, traveling through the Himalayas, when she first heard of Auroville and the Matrimandir — a dream that seemed naïve and utopian at the time. Over 50 years later, Paula has made that dream her reality, living in Auroville and walking beside the Matrimandir every day.

Matrimandir & I is a living human experiment, exploring how Aurovilians connect to the soul of their city: the Matrimandir. Our vision is to gather the voices of every Aurovilian, weaving together a shared story of human unity.

At the heart of Auroville stands the golden Matrimandir — the “Temple of the Mother.” For Sri Aurobindo, the Mother represents the universal, evolutionary force guiding humanity toward higher consciousness. Rising like a radiant sphere from the earth, the Matrimandir symbolizes the birth of a new awareness.

Surrounded by twelve inner gardens — Harmony, Bliss, Perfection, Progress, Consciousness, and more — it is both a sanctuary of peace and a beacon of human aspiration. 🌍

Auroville itself is a universal township, where people from across the globe live together in peace and progressive harmony — beyond politics, religion, or nationality — united by the goal of realizing human unity.

Matrimandir & I : ‘It’s an incredible machine to transform humans.’ - Louis | Auroras Eye Films

In this series we interview Aurovillians about their personal experiences with the Matrimandir in Auroville. Today it's Louis. He arrived in Auroville in 1971 and soon after, the Mother announced the creation of Matrimandir. Within a couple of months he was involved with a handful of Aurovillians to lay the foundation and till its completion forty years later he has been part of Matrimandir…

This Web series is a human experiment, looking into how the aurovilliens relate to the soul of Auroville - the Matrimandir. Hoping that this is the common ground for human unity. The dream would be to interview all citizens of Auroville.

At the very centre of Auroville one finds the 'soul of the city', the Matrimandir.
The name 'Matrimandir' literally means 'Temple of the Mother'. According to Sri Aurobindo, the 'Mother' concept stands for the great evolutionary, conscious and intelligent principle of Life, the Universal Mother, - which seeks to help humanity move beyond its present limitations into the next stage of its evolutionary adventure, the supramental consciousness.

The Matrimandir can be viewed as a large golden sphere which seems to be emerging out of the earth, symbolising the birth of a new consciousness. Situated in a large open area called 'Peace', from where the future township will radiate outwards. Since the past 50 years, Matrimandir's slow and steady progress towards completion has been followed by many. The atmosphere is quiet and charged, and the area beautiful.

The Matrimandir is in the midst of a garden divided into 12 individually named parks such as "Harmony", "Bliss", Perfection", Progress", "Consciousness", etc., each with their variety of flowers, shrubs and trees. The Mother envisaged the Matrimandir as the "symbol of the Divine's answer to man's aspiration for perfection" and as "the central cohesive force" for the growth of Auroville.

Auroville is a universal town where men and women of all countries can live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities.

The purpose of Auroville is to realise universal human unity.

Born in Pondicherry, Sasi watched the Matrimandir rise from the red earth of Auroville during the seventies and eighties.
Life took him far away—to Australia—but twenty years later, destiny called him home.

At first, Sasi resisted the Matrimandir. Yet, as his spiritual path deepened, something shifted. The Matrimandir began to embrace him—guiding him to peel away the layers that no longer served him. ✨

This ongoing web series is a living experiment — exploring how Aurovilians connect with the soul of Auroville: the Matrimandir. Through these stories, we hope to uncover the deeper thread that unites us all — human unity. 💫

In this episode, we meet Nadaka, who arrived in Auroville as a teenager after an overland journey from Europe to India in 1974. 🚐✨

When he first saw the Matrimandir, it looked to him like a giant ship rising out of the earth, wrapped in scaffolding — a vessel carrying a dream. Soon after, he joined the building team at just 18 years old.

To Nadaka, the Matrimandir is a space that transcends time — uniting the ancient, the present, and the future. 🌞
