For decades, people from around the world have entered this extraordinary space carrying their own questions, memories, hopes and dreams.

And each person seems to discover something different.

For one, it is silence.

For another, a sense of belonging.

For another, something they cannot put into words.

The Centre Within – Matrimandir & I is a feature documentary about this deeply personal relationship between people and the Matrimandir.

It is not a film about finding one answer.

It is about listening to the many answers that arise when we become still enough to hear them.

In this episode of our ongoing series, we meet four Aurovilians sharing their deeply personal experiences with the Matrimandir, the spiritual heart of Auroville.
Today we speak with Francis, Vinodhini, Inge, and Tom, each connected to the Matrimandir in their own unique way:

Inge arrived in Auroville as a 9-year-old in 1998 and grew up with the Matrimandir as part of his daily life.

Vinodhini made an unexpected trip to Auroville in the late 1990s—one that transformed her life forever.

Francis came to Auroville in 1968 without knowing where life would take him, and found his true home in the Matrimandir.

Tom was working in the gardens 14 years ago when a sudden surge of energy created a powerful bond with the place.

This web series is a human experiment—an exploration of how Aurovilians relate to the soul of Auroville, the Matrimandir. Our dream is to one day interview every citizen of Auroville, discovering whether this shared space can become a true common ground for human unity.

🌟 About the Matrimandir

At the very center of Auroville stands the Matrimandir, literally the “Temple of the Mother.”
According to Sri Aurobindo, “the Mother” represents the evolutionary, conscious, and intelligent force of life—the Universal Mother—guiding humanity towards its next step: supramental consciousness.

Emerging from the earth like a great golden sphere, the Matrimandir symbolizes the birth of a new consciousness. It rises from a vast open area known as Peace, the point from which the future international township of Auroville will radiate outward.

Surrounded by 12 exquisite gardens—Harmony, Bliss, Perfection, Progress, Consciousness, and more—the Matrimandir was envisioned by The Mother as a symbol of the Divine’s response to humanity’s aspiration for perfection, and as the unifying center for the growth of Auroville.
