What brings someone to Auroville — and what makes them stay?
In Episode 12 of Matrimandir & I, we meet four Aurovilians whose journeys could hardly be more different. One arrived as a baby. Another came in her mother’s arms. One travelled overland from London to India in 1971. Another came to meet the Dalai Lama, only to be unexpectedly guided toward Auroville by a stranger.
Yet, somehow, their paths all led to the same place: the Matrimandir.
👶 Oliver arrived in Auroville at just one and a half years old and grew up with the Matrimandir as part of his world.
🌸 Chali arrived as a baby in her mother’s arms and spent her childhood watching the Matrimandir emerge from the earth.
🚌 Judith travelled overland by bus from London to India in 1971, following a dream of discovering a different way of living.
🌍 Hamish came to India to meet the Dalai Lama. A chance encounter and a stranger’s advice changed his journey — leading him to Auroville in 2012.
Four lives. Four beginnings. One destination.
And at the centre of their stories stands the Matrimandir — the golden sphere known as the “Soul of Auroville.”

Matrimandir & I is an ongoing documentary web series and human experiment exploring one question:
How do the people of Auroville relate to the Matrimandir?
Every Aurovilian has a different story. Some were born here. Some arrived by chance. Some came searching for something they couldn't name. Others have spent decades watching the Matrimandir evolve.
Our dream is ambitious: to interview every citizen of Auroville and bring together these individual experiences to discover whether, beneath all our differences, there is a shared inner ground — a possibility for human unity.
🕊️ WHAT IS THE MATRIMANDIR?
At the centre of Auroville stands the Matrimandir, meaning “Temple of the Mother.”
The golden sphere rises from the earth in the vast open area known as Peace. Surrounded by twelve gardens — including Harmony, Bliss, Perfection, Progress and Consciousness — it has become one of the defining symbols of Auroville.
For Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, Auroville represents an experiment in human unity and an aspiration toward a new consciousness.
The Matrimandir was envisioned not as a conventional religious temple, but as a place for silence, concentration, inner discovery and transformation.
🌍 WHAT IS AUROVILLE?
Auroville is a universal township in South India where people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds come together to explore a different way of living.
Its founding vision reaches beyond nationality, religion and politics, with one profound aspiration:
To realise human unity.
