The festival of Dussehra celebrates the victory of Lord Ram over the demon king Ravana. Ravana, a magnificent ruler and a great devotee of Lord Shiva, is also known as ‘Dashagriva’ or ‘Dashanan’ or the one with 10 heads.

As Ravana was a learned king, it is believed that the 10 heads of Ravana represent the six shastras and four Vedas, which he had mastered. Symbolically, the 10 heads could represent Ravana’s mental power which was considered to be 10 times that of an average human being.

Despite being an expert warrior, a good king, an astrologer and a doctor of Ayurveda, Ravana succumbed to a medley of life’s vices. As the evil qualities took over his personality and finally led to his destruction, students of mythology came to believe that the 10 heads of Ravana represented the flaws of the king.

शुभ नागपञ्चमी।

These Nagas have diverse roles in Hindu mythology and are revered for their unique attributes and contributions to various stories and events. And on this Nāga Panchami, we pray to these Nāga to give us strength and good health.

Here is a short description of each Nāga.

अनन्त (ananta): Also known as Adi Shesha, he is infinite and the bed of Mahavishnu, holding the universe on his hoods.

वासुकि (vāsuki): A devoted serpent associated with Shiva, Vasuki served as the churning rope during the Samudra Manthan and is considered the ring on Shiva's finger.

तक्षक (takṣaka): Noted for his role in the story of Pariksh*t's death, he was saved from a Yagna by Astika and has a terrible form with potent venom.

कर्कट (karkaṭa): A serpent who saved Nala from a forest fire and played a crucial role in the Nalacarita, providing guidance to Nala.

शङ्ख (śaṅkha): A fiery serpent with many heads but not harmful, he was among the important Nagas that accompanied Balarama to Hades upon his death.

पद्म (padma): Holding the north-west part of the earth aloft, Padma has a single head and a red colour resembling a lotus.

महापद्म (mahāpadma): Also known as Shanka Padma, he holds a prime place among Nagas with a trident mark on his hood and white colour.

कुलीर (kulīra): Occupying a significant place in astrology, Gulika has strong venom and ferocious nature, instilling fear in others.

The historic method being then unknown, the evolution of the state through various stages is

not discussed by ancient Indian writers. It is the first time in Arthashastra of Kautilya find

enumerated seven elements of state. The state as seven-limed is contemplated by ancient

Hindu thinkers. The state is defined for the first time in the Arthashastra of Kautilya as

consisting of seven elements. In Manusmriti, Manu deals with seven Prakritis of the state

like king, the ministers, the capital, the realm, the treasure, the army and ally. But Kautilya

in his Arthashastra put the same in a different order like the swami, the Amatyas, the

Janapada, the Durgas, the Kosha, the Danda, the Mitra and the enemy. He changed the

previous order to priority and added a new element viz. the enemy. Kautilya also reduces the

elements of the state when he writes the king and kingdom are the primary elements of the

state because all other elements revolve round these two elements.
