Jaffa Art: Lining the walkway of a main Street in Jaffa are many paintings by local artists. ⠀

Picture 1. The first picture here is one I was drawn to as both my parents were part of the hippie movement in the US, protesting against war and epitomizing the youthful hope of revolution.⠀

Picture 2. Here you can see two iconic cartoon characters embracing, depicting hope and peace for the people of this region.⠀

The character on the left is Srulik, a cartoon character of a young boy symbolizing Zionism, the newly established Israeli state and her native born Israelis. ⠀

On the right you can also see Handala, a fictional character of a Palestinian boy who is seen as the political symbolic of the Palestinian struggle.

Jaffa is an ancient port city in Israel and the oldest part of Tel Aviv. Rich in history, it is now a mixed Arab and Jewish neighborhood hosting a variety of restaurants, sweet shops, ho**ah bars, and souvenir shops. ⠀

Photos 1-3: Pictured here is me with a chili passion fruit margarita trying to have a chill moment as my 3-year-old was losing it. Don't I look relaxed? We later reconciled over .gilda ice cream. ⠀

Photo 4: Three lovely gentlemen who agreed to have their picture taken. This was my first time getting up the courage to ask people to photograph them and I was very excited not only to capture the scene but what it means for my photo journey if I can keep the courage up⠀

Photos 5-6: Bar scenes in Jaffa⠀

With the orange skies, smoke in the air, and millions of acres burned, it has felt like the apocalypse in California. Here is an inside view of what this experience has been like.

Like 20% of the country, I have had the majority of my income taken away by the pandemic. It's difficult to know if I should pivot ( which I have started to slowly do) to find other work, or to try and preserve my cooking business and adapt to the times ( not so easy...).

The government aid I was given was 5% of the money I would have made- just enough to give back to the municipality in rental housing tax.

But I feel lucky, because we have had some savings we could use. And while I don't know what will happen in a few months, I know that my education, native English and downright scrappiness will probably mean we will be okay.

But that's not the case for so many Israelis who are struggling to afford food and bills.

We can only hope that the government figures it out, the virus dies down, and that people help each other to get through these tough times.

I have a confession. I changed the banner to exclude ' a new video, every week'.

My intention ultimately is to be able to have new content to share. EVERY. week. But man if life doesn't get in the way!

So it's down for now and when I am able to produce faster, I'll put it back

I live in a country that celebrates the birthday of trees- every year!

So much effort is put into growing, that the country has become a top exporter of fruit and other produce.

Ready to find out which country this is?

Check out the video below and let us know in the comments what nature-related traditions you have in your own country.

Thanks for joining me at Aliya's Table, see you next week!

I'm so excited to be releasing this video! Now more than ever I am trying to find beauty in the everyday things I do.

Why can't making french toast, planting a flower or playing with my baby be as magical as a rainbow unicorn?

I encourage all of you to think about what you love to do and how you can see it as magical!
