Don't Skip Pre-Production! 🎥
Ever feel like you’re spending more time on editing than actually creating?
One of the biggest mistakes I see in video content creation is skipping the pre-production phase. It might seem like a simple step, but trust me—it can save you tons of time and stress in the long run!
Taking just a bit of time to plan your shots, outline your script, and gather your assets can make a world of difference. 🗂️🔍 It helps you stay organized and focused, leading to smoother filming and editing. Here are my top tips on pre-production to save yourself a world of pain when it comes to editing:
- Start by clearly identifying the purpose of your video. Are you trying to educate, entertain, or inspire?
- Make a shot list to stop yourself from completely overfilming and being left with way too much footage to comb through. This can include angles, close-ups, and B-roll
- Write a script or at least an outline of the main points you want to cover. The level of detail is completely personal preference, test out what works for you
- Check and prepare all your gear, i.e. make sure everything is charged and that you have enough storage space in your phone
- Set the scene - chose a good location with good natural lighting whenever possible. Take a few tester shots so you know you're happy with it
- Rehearse! You don't have an entire video memorised to rattle off in one go, but get nice and comfortable with the camera, practise your lines, and do multiple takes.
- Get creative! Think ahead to any fun transitions or effects you might want to use and whether or not you need to shoot something specific for them

It's the difference between posting willy-nilly and posting with a STRATEGY
The first thing I do when creating a strategy with a client is figuring out their main goal with the account. And that goal can be ANYTHING. Sure, sometimes it is follower growth. But other times, it's engagement, or brand awareness, or sales/conversions, or community building, etc. etc. etc.
But setting that goal determines every other part of the strategy that follows. It also highlights the need to renew and update your strategy because once you hit that goal, you start again and set a new one.
I don't believe that creating your strategy has to be some complicated thing. I'm not much of a fan of jargon and buzzwords. I believe it just comes down to getting your thoughts, ideas, and goals together and making a plan to actually achieve them!
