The late Robert Fisk’s Dalkey home overlooks all of Dublin Bay, but the view from his writing desk is surprisingly small.

“It directs the eye to a tiny bit of moving water,” says writer and filmmaker Nelofer Pazira-Fisk, the author and journalist’s wife for 11 years before his sudden death on October 30, 2020.

Fisk did most of his writing at this desk, behind which Pazira-Fisk stands while she explains the rhythm and routine of their working lives. He was working on his now-published final book, Night of Power: The Betrayal of the Middle East, when he became ill and was admitted to St Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin, in that strange limbo between two lockdowns.

Fisk died two weeks after admission for what was first thought to be a “bilateral lung infection”, she says. It was a time when Covid restrictions kept visitors from hospital patients. All of these factors have added to the grief and even regret around his death, she explains.

When she felt able, Pazira-Fisk finished her late husband’s book. 'Night of Power'.

New figures reveal 7,800 fewer patients were on trolleys in the first half of this year – down 14pc on the same period last year. This is despite 62,000 more patients presenting to emergency departments so far this year

Two hospitals have succeeded in having zero patients on trolleys waiting for a bed in their emergency departments in the first six months of the year amid hopeful signals of a turnaround in the overcrowding crisis.

Dublin Zoo has confirmed the death of a second elephant due to a virus that killed a female elephant in the herd last week.

Zinda, a seven-year-old elephant, died of elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV) yesterday.

While the virus poses no threat to humans, it can be fatal when it affects young elephants.

Zinda’s death comes a week after Avani, an eight-year-old female Asian elephant, died after contracting the same virus.

“Dublin Zoo is heartbroken to announce the passing of Zinda, our beloved 7-year-old elephant, on 7th July, due to Elephant EEHV,” a statement from the zoo said.

In a city ranked as the world’s second slowest for drivers, where it takes on average 29 minutes and 30 seconds to travel just 10km and where air pollution poses serious risks to health and well-being, making Dublin a better place for people and public transport is good public policy.

It should be a no-brainer. But last week we have seen calls for the Dublin City Centre Transport Plan to be paused until January. This is a clever strategic ploy to derail the plan and preserve the status quo

Question: I am very concerned about our parents’ relationship with my sister and her family. There are three of us ‘children’ of parents who are now in their 60s — two brothers (of whom I am one) and one sister. We are all happily married and love our parents very much as they gave us a great upbringing. But something strange is happening which makes me and my brother upset.

My sister and her husband have great jobs, live in a big house and have plenty of money, yet our parents keep giving them lavish gifts. They pay for their children’s education, they helped them buy a weekend cottage down the country and they bring them on holidays with them to places like Disney World, the Caribbean and even Japan last year. My brother and I get nothing from them apart from the odd birthday card, and our kids get smallish presents at Christmas.

My brother and I cannot understand why we are left out of this spending spree, and are now worried that when they die my parents will leave all their money to our sister. I know it’s their money and they are free to do as they wish with it but still, I feel it is very unfair.

I would like to approach my parents and have this out with them but I don’t want to start a rift in our family. Have you any advice as to how I could get them to even out their largesse? Particularly as my brother and I are not nearly as well off as our sister. Should I approach my sister too? I’m very torn and would appreciate your help.

We islanders love the water, even those of us who live in midland counties, and Newbridge hairdresser Sam O’Byrne is no exception. He spent 10 years in Australia and adored the lifestyle there, particularly the times he spent surrounded by water, whether at the beach or people-watching in Sydney Harbour. However, about five years ago he got the opportunity to have his own home back in Ireland. One little snag – it’s in Kildare, one of the landlocked counties.

Sam’s solution was to create a garden with, as its centrepiece, a water feature surrounded by Australian planting, and to make sure he could always see it from within the house, he had large expanses of glass put in. “My dad was like, ‘You’re not looking at Bondi Beach, what do you want so much glass for?’ but I’m delighted with it,” Sam notes with a laugh.
