The afternoon at the 7th Annual NMS Conference, “Traces: The Archaeology of Small Things,” at Dublin Castle did not disappoint! We were treated to a fascinating array of presentations: Dr. Joshua Kumbani gave us a glimpse into the music archaeology of Southern Africa, Brigitte Webster added a pinch of Tudor seasoning, Prof. Pádraig Ó Macháin explored spectroscopy and Irish manuscripts, and Dr. Niamh Whitfield revealed tiny tell-tale details in Insular metalwork. Michael MacDonagh, Chief State Archaeologist of National Monuments, closed the conference. What a day!

Ruairc, Michael Kennedy and Caitlin White, we find out a lot more—not only who was killed but also when, where, in what circumstances, and how they were commemorated.

On receiving the prize, Professor Cooney commented

"It is a pleasure to acknowledge the dedication, work and publications of many colleagues in archaeology, osteo-archaeology and related disciplines working in and on Ireland whose scholarship enabled and underpins the people-based approach taken in Death in Irish prehistory."

For the second year running, two prizes were awarded by the EAA selection committee. The other winner this year is Graeme Warren, for his book Hunter-Gatherer Ireland. Professor Warren (pictured here with Gabriel Cooney), also of UCD School of Archaeology, was elected a member of the Royal Irish Academy in May this year.
