📸 Here's a really illustrative picture of the work that goes into laying subsea cables, which are vital links for connecting island communities.

⚡ This was taken last week, when we completed phase one of installing a new subsea cable between the island of Papa Stour and Mainland Shetland.

🚢 Now the cable's laid, we'll put layers of protection around it. Then, we'll connect it to the network and carry out rigorous testing.

Works like this are weather dependent, and safety always comes first. We're working as safely and quickly as we can, and we thank the people of Papa Stour for their patience while we do so.

Oil-based emulsion veterinary vaccines are highly irritant & can cause local tissue injury & necrosis if accidentally injected into a digit. The injury is usually more serious if a high pressure multi-dosing gun is involved. Call National Poisons Information Centre, Ireland on 01 809 2166 for advice if needed.

Haulbowline Lighthouse is celebrating two centuries of guiding mariners to safety this year. Located at the entrance of Carlingford Lough, it has been essential in marking both the channel and rocks, ensuring safe navigation for mariners since 1824.

The current light signal pattern of three flashes over ten seconds has been in use since 1922 and has a range of ten nautical miles. In 1965, Haulbowline Lighthouse became the first major offshore Irish lighthouse to be fully automated and is remotely monitored from shore. The 1897 Amoskeag steam-powered fire engine, a towering piece of machinery weighing 17,000 pounds (7,700 kg), was a formidable presence in the Boston Fire Department's fleet around 1919. Manufactured by the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company, this steam engine was a symbol of cutting-edge technology at the time, representing the pinnacle of firefighting innovation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Amoskeag steam engine was a workhorse, designed to pump large volumes of water at high pressure, crucial for battling the devastating fires that were common in densely populated urban areas like Boston. Its massive size and weight were indicative of the power it packed, driven by steam generated from coal-fired boilers. The engine was capable of delivering a continuous stream of water, a critical advantage in an era before the widespread availability of motorized fire trucks.

In 1919, the Boston Fire Department still relied heavily on these steam-powered engines, despite the gradual shift towards internal combustion engines. The Amoskeag engine, with its polished brass fittings and intricate ironwork, was often drawn by a team of horses, which added to its dramatic arrival at fire scenes. The sight of the engine, billowing steam and clanging with the sound of its bell, was both awe-inspiring and reassuring to the citizens of Boston, signaling that help was on the way.

This particular engine, with its 22 years of service by 1919, had likely seen countless fires and saved numerous lives and properties. It was a testament to the durability and reliability of Amoskeag's design, which was renowned for its efficiency and ease of operation. Firefighters operating the engine would have needed both skill and strength, managing the intense heat of the boiler, the powerful force of the water, and the coordination required to direct the engine's output.

By 1919, the Amoskeag steam engine was nearing the end of its service life, as more modern and motorized fire apparatus began to replace these steam giants. However, its legacy lived on as a symbol of a transformative era in firefighting history. The transition from steam to motorized engines marked the beginning of a new chapter, but the Amoskeag engine remained a proud relic of a time when steam power was at the forefront of technological advancement in public safety.

I currently work as a Systems Technician with the RNLI...which, aside from the boats, there is no shortage of interesting vehicles. I also volunteer with our local Red Cross branch - Enniscorthy Red cross. We have an ex-British army Land Rover Defender ambulance with V8 Rover petrol engine.

I would like to develop this page further, either online or as a magazine to include technical details of the vehicles, their build/specialist bodies. I would also like to include details of those who build,, fix & drive/operate them. So here goes!!
