Thanks again everyone for the support. This battle maybe over but I'll be back again very soon for the general elections as the discriminatory war on certain types of drug users continues. I wont be giving up until we in the interest of the of our society.
Drug prohibition doesn't work and is a source of major problems for our society.
I got to chat with Colm Burke the minister with responsibility for our national drug strategy at the count center.
Colm was keen to push the "health diversion program" as the compassionate solution to drug possession and was using a single study to claim cannabis legalisation in Canada has caused a major jump in psychosis so we shouldn't be legalising cannabis here at all.
He also admitted to not being an expert on drug policy and it was at that point that I requested we meet at his office in Blackpool, Cork city to discuss this much further, to which he agreed and a time and date is to be set in the morning.

Thanks very much to everyone who went out and supported me throughout this campaign. I finished off earlier today with 265 votes. I'm grateful for each and every vote I received and it won't be long more before the next is called. It's my intention at this moment to put my name forward for the Cork North Central constituency.
Hopefully I don't get locked up before then for 1 of the many protests I held against the discriminatory misuse of drugs act and even if I should find myself in prison I will still put my name forward for election.
Monday June 17th is the next court date I have for a protest I held on Valentines day 2022. As it was Valentines day I brought some flowers, Cannabis flowers high in CBD & low in THC as a gift to the gardaí that were stationed in Anglesea street garda station.
I'm being charged in this case for possession of cannabis but I will be challenging the legitimacy of the Act to discriminate as it does, while also reducing the effectiveness of our gardaí and the vital community policing service they provide our communities.

There was no need to delay this bill. Right now this morning there are numerous people across the country making their way to court because they were caught in possession of Cannabis.
Their punishment is wrong and the minister with responsibility for our national drug strategy has acknowledged this along with a joint justice committee back at the end of 2022. Yet despite this people will now have to wait and suffer until effectively 2025 before we can continue this conversation on the reform of our drug laws.

The governments nine month delay tactic on Gino Kenny's bill on Cannabis will lead to 1000s of more lives being destroyed. What the government sees as a cunning plan, to delay the inevitable, is in fact an act of immense stupidity. Nine more months of turning our young people into criminals. Nine more months of wasting badly stretched Garda resources. Nine more months of shoving their heads in the sand.

Almost every week my office receives a panicked phone call from someone, usually male and in their twenties, about how they've just been caught with a small amount of cannabis. Over the years the calls have been plentiful and all express the same legitimate fears. Will they lose their job if the court details appear in the newspaper? Will they get evicted? Will their US visa be valid anymore? Will they lose their children as a result of a conviction because their former partner will use it against them? One particular individual told me that he was contemplating killing himself because he now felt he wouldn't be able to work as a doctor having trained for years. I often wonder what happened to those who call.

Many who call about being summonsed to court tell me that they are self-prescribing it for medicinal reasons. For pain. For trauma. To help them sleep. For those people the government delay tactic means another nine months of looking over their shoulder. Waiting for the state sanctioned kick in the head when the undercover guards come calling.

This doesn't matter to people in government though. Leo Varadkar, a self-proclaimed user of cannabis in the past, stated this week that those caught in possession don't actually get convicted. So why all the bother with changing the law! Either he's totally misinformed or he is deliberately misleading people on this. The facts are clear. Thousands end up with a criminal record ever year.

Leo is living in a bubble where he personally knows no one that gets convicted. The connected don't get convicted. You see this law isn't about the right or wrongs of cannabis use. It's about leaving the Gardai with a stick to use whenever they want to give the plebs a clip around the ear.

Sure the Gardai even admitted this themselves at the Citizens assembly. They openly spoke about how legalisation would hamper their ability to stop and search. A power that ultimately hinders rather than helps Gardai. The Gardai need people to trust them to solve real crimes. This law corrodes that trust.

There'll be some out there reading this who say tough luck. Follow the law or pay the price. In the next nine months some of you will change your mind. You'll change it because your son or your daughter will face a life changing charge. One that will disrupt their lives in a most serious way. There'll be thousands of you too. There has been every year for decades. Today the government let you down badly and as of yet you don't even know it. The time to end this state sponsored trauma is now. Not in nine months' time. For many the law will already have done the damage by then. Today the government did a terrible thing.
