A married carer fell for an online romance fraud and stole €122,000 from a vulnerable elderly couple during the pandemic before converting it into crypto and sending it to a fictitious US soldier, a court has heard.

Angela Manning (59) told her victims: “I have bled you dry; there is nothing left”.

The court also heard that the deeds of Manning's family home are now in the possession of the victims, while her husband has had to return to work after she also took his retirement savings.

Manning of Kingston Walk, Ballinteer, Dublin 22, pleaded guilty to seven sample charges of stealing money from an elderly couple via ATM withdrawals in Dublin between April 2019 and September 2021.

"In 2019 my first child was born. An amazing boy whose innocence and vulnerability tore down my defiant defences.

It seems I didn’t know I had gold in my pockets until I was turned upside down. Something profound happened; I faced my past in Terenure College, I stopped running.

I took my power back and remembered you in all your poisoned glory.

I so admired the small boy who resisted you, I saw his shining face again, I thanked him for saving me."

-Paul Kennedy (pictured), survivor of abuse at the hands of former Terence College Rugby Coach and teacher John McClean, in his victim impact statement today.
