TRINITY’S DEFINITION DILEMMA

HAVING FACED down the college authorities in May over ties between Trinners and Israeli institutions, the TCD Students’ Union and the Trinity Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions group can’t have been overly impressed with last month’s decision to award former Belgian prime minister and hardcore Nato advocate Herman Van Rompuy an honorary degree. Of more concern, however, will be the calls for Trinity to “consider adopting” the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) definition of antisemitism.

Goldhawk asked Trinity if there had been any moves towards adopting the IHRA definition and was told: “As part of its work on race...

AS GOLDHAWK predicted last year (see The Phoenix, 6/10/23) the Tory British government knew that its ‘legacy’ act would either be found unlawful by the European Court of Human rights (ECHR) or that Labour leader, Keir Starmer would bin the act.

The real purpose of the act was not simply to save British soldiers from prosecution of various unlawful killings but to suppress various appalling vistas from emerging, ie, collusion between Loyalist death squads and their controllers in British intelligence. Under the new dispensation of a renewed spirit of inquiry it will be fascinating to see what evidence emerges of MI5 and other under cover military agencies operating in the north during the Troubles. And whether Starmer’s finger prints will be found anywhere near the legal cover-up of any such incidents.

DOUBLE STANDARDS AT THE ‘IRISH TIMES’

'But what about the IT’s failure to report a clergyman child s*x offender, his church or his victim? The church did not refer him to police and instead moved him to a parish far away, afterwards promoting him and allowing him to bask in ecclesiastical and even academic respectability.'

CHAOTIC C&C’S PROFITS SET TO GET VERY FIZZY

THE C&C saga continues to deliver twists and turns. Less than one year after David Forde stepped down with immediate effect as chief bottlewasher at C&C (on foot of the disclosure of a €25m software adjustment charge in one division), his replacement as CEO, Paddy McMahon, has also cleared off. What is it about C&C that the firm continues to deliver frankly bizarre outcomes? For investors, however, the share price plunge makes the company an attractive proposition.

FROM SHANNON TO UKRAINE

AN OMNI Air aircraft, N351AX, on contract to the US military, landed at Shannon last weekend from Rzeszow airport in the southeast of Poland. Rzeszow is the main supply airport for munitions and Nato soldiers going into Ukraine. The plane also made a stop at Tallinn in Estonia, which neutrality activists in Shannon say shows that the plane was part of what they call the US proxy war in Ukraine against Russia. After refuelling, the plane took off on its way back to America.

RTÉ TOLD: DO MORE WITH LESS

RTÉ’s decision to outsource Fair City and The Late Late Show to outside production companies has been greeted with anger by Montrose trade unions who fear, correctly, that it will lead to job losses and lower wages. Both Siptu and the NUJ have announced that they will fight tooth and nail against this, but with RTÉ funding totally dependent on government whim, it’s the Government that is driving the change, not management.

MACRON’S FRENCH EMPIRE CRUMBLES

With French president Emmanuel Macron grappling with a complicated loss of power at home, his illusions about restoring the glory days of the French empire have also taken a battering with the announcement by Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger that they are forming an Alliance of Sahel States...

Ireland is involved in this situation, of course, because Irish troops were sent to Mali as part of a French-led military intervention...

The impressive showing so far by jockey-turned-TV-celebrity suggests the decision by to keep her off the national airwaves as much as possible while promoting the Midlands-North-West candidate through online promotion has paid off. The blueshirts spent more on Nina's Facebook and Instagram ads (€17,700) than on any of their other candidates, while keeping her 'real life' broadcasting visibility to a minimum.
