☘️ IAOTY : Lankum ☘️

Such eerie theatre is a fitting introduction to the Dublin folk band, who turn traditional songs into fresh horrors and write stormy, gothic elegies to modern life which already feel centuries old. Their latest album, the Mercury prize-nominated False Lankum, is bound together by similarly haunted atmospherics,

They have a ferocious physicality to their musicianship, and although Daragh describes new (old) song The New York Trader as a “workout, every time”.

In 2018, they were named Best Folk Group at the RTÉ Folk Music Awards, while Radie Peat was named Best Folk Singer. The band were nominated for the RTÉ Choice Music Prize Irish Album of the Year in 2017 for their album Between the Earth and Sky, and won the prize in 2019 for their album The Livelong Day.
The band’s fourth studio album, False Lankum (2023), was released to widespread critical acclaim and increased the band’s exposure significantly. It was nominated for the Mercury Prize and placed highly on several end-of-year lists.
Huge congrats to LANKUM on their Irish Artist of The Year nomination

☘️ IAOTY : Hozier ☘️

With over 22 billion global streams, numerous platinum album certifications, and multiple award nominations and wins, Hozier is recognised as one of the foremost singer-songwriters of our generation. Ever since he started to write songs at fifteen, music remained a part of Hozier’s life throughout his young adulthood in many forms, from his work with the Trinity Orchestra and choral ensemble Anúna to his time spent as a backup singer for Billy Ocean. It wasn’t until his debut single ‘Take Me To Church’ was released in 2013, however, that his career really exploded.

The thought-provoking, quintuple-platinum anthem was a Grammy-nominated critical and commercial success, and the precursor to a debut album that hit the No.2 spot on the Billboard Top 200. The second biggest debut album of the year, Hozier went on to achieve triple RIAA Platinum status and enjoyed nine weeks at number 1 in his native Ireland, spending an incredible 441 weeks overall in the Irish Top 50 charts.

Hozier’s sophomore record, Wasteland, Baby! was released to massive critical acclaim in March 2019, entering the US Billboard Top 200 Chart at No.1. The album’s 14 tracks marked a major development in song-writing and subject matter. The most obvious is Hozier’s enlightened assessment of the global socio-political landscape. The multi-platinum selling album included the singles ‘Nina Cried Power’, ‘Movement’, ‘Almost (Sweet music)’, and ‘Dinner and Diatribes’.

His third album, Unreal Unearth, released in August 2023. Hozier finds himself as one of the greatest songwriters in his field with a record in Unreal Unearth that has spawned world class tracks in “Eat Your Young,” “All Things End,” “Francesca” & “De Selby (Part 2)”. In a week which saw incredible international chart success, he outsold the UK top 5 combined to score the top spot in Ireland.

Huge congrats to on his Irish Artist of The Year nomination

☘️ IAOTY : CMAT ☘️

CMAT – the eponymous stage name of Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson – flew into the public eye in her hometown of Dublin when she launched third single ‘I Wanna Be A Cowboy, Baby!’. The release is an effortless piece of mildly country-tinged pop that shone a light on a charismatic and comic approach to songwriting, and an artist with an effortlessly high level of charisma.
The clamor for more started shortly afterwards, and by the time debut album ‘If My Wife New I’d Be Dead’ (dubious grammar all her own) appeared, CMAT had gathered some serious momentum, headlining some of the biggest venues in the city. Described by local music bible Hot Press as “undoubtedly one of the most thrilling Irish pop debuts of the century,” the album was just another sign CMAT was quickly establishing a brand: comically laid back pop, cuttingly sharp stage presence, and a penchant for covering her releases in colourful cartoons as artwork.

Beneath the comic facade, CMAT’s music is riddled with a kind of relatable melancholy and a blend of cultural references.
The overall effect is like a snapshot of the malaise of modern day young life in Dublin – fun meets the emergence of modern day freedoms, meets a feeling that life’s finer things will always remain the property of others. This sense of cultural belonging is, perhaps, why CMAT connected so swiftly and so easily. For all her Nashville tendencies – and there is a definite air of country-light to her sound, almost like a toned down Shania Twain with a cool-Eire undertone – CMAT is pure Dublin.
She won the RTÉ Choice Music Prize Album of the Year award last year, and her star continues to rise and shine

Huge congrats to on her Irish Artist of The Year nomination

☘️ IAOTY : Cian Ducrot ☘️

Raised in Cork, Cian was surrounded by music growing up and soon excelled himself, learning piano, classical guitar, saxophone, percussion, drums, violin and the flute. He studied at London’s Royal Academy of Music from the age of nine and soon felt split between his classical training and his desire to make pop music. He continued his studies while writing songs and posting on social media, but his mind was made up following a successful songwriting camp in Los Angeles. The deciding factor between the two worlds was the ability that a pop artist has to connect with their audience- and that remains a big aspect of his artistry to this day. He was far from an overnight success, however, often borrowing money, busking, surfing sofas and taking on random jobs to fund writing trips to London and LA.

His first breakthrough on TikTok led to his debut EP Make Believe and he grew in stature with every release, especially when ‘I’ll Be Waiting’ and‘ All For You’ completed his journey from pub gigs in Cork to the upper reaches of the charts. After watching his debut album Victory soar to the top of the albums chart in both Ireland and the UK, and seeing his biggest Irish tour to date sell out in a matter of minutes, Cork pop singer-songwriter Cian Ducrot is now nominated for the RTÉ Choice Prize for Irish Artist of the Year

☘️ BIAOTY : The Scratch ☘️

The Scratch are a four-piece band that sound like no one else you’ve ever heard before, featuring Conor Dockery (guitar, backing vocals), Cathal McKenna (bass/backing vocals), Daniel Lang (cajón, percussion, lead vocals), and Jordan O’Leary (guitar, lead vocals). Like all the great progressive musicians, they turn music on its head and pour their hearts and souls into their art to forge something original and new.

Musicians making the time-honoured leap from acoustic to electric are well-documented, but The Scratch did it the other way round. Bob Dylan famously received a hostile reaction when he went electric in 1965. When The Scratch went acoustic, they ushered in a new and exciting creative chapter. What’s more, they signed to Sony Music Ireland and are on the same roster as Bob Dylan!

☘️ BIAOTY : ØXN ☘️

Øxn are a bewitching quartet featuring the Lankum frontwoman Radie Peat, Katie Kim, and Spud Murphy and Eleanor Myler of Percolator, who radically rework folk into new shapes and sounds.

Featuring grisly trad tales, striking vocals, two members of Lankum and shades of PJ Harvey, CRYM is a compelling record from Claddagh’s first signing for nearly two decades

☘️ IBAOTY : John Francis Flynn ☘️

John Francis Flynn is a singer and multi-instrumentalist whose work centres around traditional and folk material from Ireland. 💿 Classic Irish Album 💿

RTÉ Choice Music Prize Classic Irish Album, in association with IMRO and IRMA has just been announced on RTÉ Gold by Will Leahy.

The winning album is: Achtung Baby by U2.

The judges for the prize are Sinead Crowley (Coimisiún na Meán), Michael Kealy (RTÉ TV), Maeve Quigley (Irish Daily Mail) and Will Leahy (RTÉ Gold) with Paul Russell (2FM) as the chairperson.
The panel chose Achtung Baby by U2 as their Classic Irish Album for the RTÉ Choice Music Prize and explain further: “The panel is unanimous that you cannot deny the album’s authenticity and significant cultural impact as one classic song after another unfolds over 55 minutes. To this day, it still resonates as a collection of songs that capture the spirit of change at both a personal as well as a societal level, when the Berlin wall came tumbling down, and Ireland sensed a change in the air. The ground-breaking Zoo TV Tour in support of the album helped to re-invent the stadium show and now over 30 years later, Achtung Baby is at the heart of the globally acclaimed ‘U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At Sphere’, a string of ground-breaking performances which launched Sphere, the cutting-edge new venue in Las Vegas”.

The album won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance and became one of the most significant records of the nineties and of U2’s career. Recorded over six months at Hansa Studio in Berlin and Windmill Lane in Dublin, Achtung Baby is U2’s seventh studio album. Produced by long time U2 collaborators, Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno with Steve Lillywhite, Achtung Baby was engineered by Flood and released on 18th November 1991. Led by The Fly, four other singles followed: Mysterious Ways, One, Even Better Than The Real Thing and Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses.

“Achtung Baby is rightly known as one of rock’s greatest reinventions because it was so complete.” – Pitchfork

🎶 SOTY - Niall Horan : Heaven 🎶

“On “Heaven,” his first single in three years, the musician crosses the line from romantic infatuation into full-blown obsession – and he’s unabashedly reveling in it.

“Strange light revolves around you/You float across the room,” Horan sings on the opening verse, listing out observations about this ethereal being he’s encountered. “Your touch is made of something/Heaven can’t hold a candle to/You’re made of somethin’ new.” -

🎶 SOTY - Lankum : Go Dig My Grave 🎶

“Lankum slows the tempo to a dirge as singer Radie Peat enunciates every syllable — this time, every word of the woman who hung herself for lost love will be heard and be judged sane. Layer upon layer of drones surface like water weeds behind Peat’s clear delivery; then the words fall away and the din continues for four more minutes. Peadar Gill’s stunning video shows hands entwined with rope and ghosts, played by Peat’s band members, silent in their vigil. The images disturb; the sound is like little in folk music, closer to the Velvet Underground’s “The Black Angel’s Death Song.” The gale force of a stirring afterlife echoes through the song, and that old reason for keening — to reveal the miracle of grief, that it can bridge death’s barrier, if only for the span of a mourner’s cry — is revealed.” -

🎶 SOTY - Kojaque : WOOF 🎶

“WOOF’ is dosed in colour, Kojaque blending club tropes with his own larger-than-life songwriting. Joined by fellow Irish artist Biig Piig, the two use the song to explore the dynamic behind an argument – with neither side wanting to give way.
Karma Kid is on production, and it’s a fun, helter-skelter pop song that plays by its own defiant rules.
In Kojaque’s words, the song looks into “when you get to that pointless stage of an argument with someone where neither of you are communicating anymore: no one’s looking for a resolution. Karma Kid sent the beat during lockdown, and Biig Piig absolutely crushed it. She was one of the very first people I clicked with when I came to London, so I’m delighted we finally got to work together.” -

🎶 SOTY - John Francis Flynn: Mole In The Ground 🎶

“Mole in the Ground’, a 1920s song which became known from Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music. It would not seem out of place on a Tom Waits album, from the outsider eccentricity of its Bascom Lamar Lunsford lyrics – “drink up your blood like wine”, “I wish I was a lizard in the spring” – to Flynn’s deadpan, basso profundo delivery, and the wild instrumentation with sawing fiddles and explosions of guitar noise.” -

🎶 SOTY - Hozier : Eat Your Young 🎶

“it starts us off with vocalisations and layered production. “I’m starving, darling/Let me out my lips to something/Let me wrap my teeth around the world”he delivers in the opening line. According to Hozier himself, the song is a taste of the 9 Circles of Hell, specifically the third circle, gluttony. However, if the listener didn’t already know this going into the track, then they probably wouldn’t guess it. His gorgeous vocals and rich tone, paired with the impressive, towering production of crescendos mask the dark subject at hand.” - When The Horn Blows

“An artist who constantly finds inspiration from the love and commitment that comes from his family, ‘Heaven’ sees Cian reflecting on his bond with his brother.
