Hi everyone,
After complaints following the latest edition of Paddy's Spiel, largely regarding the Repeal section, I would just like to issue a statement.
As an editor, I have to remain entirely impartial and unbiased. I apologise if the voice and tone of the anti-repeal articles offended anybody; this issue is, by nature, extremely inflammatory and complaints were not unprecedented. However, I do wish to stress that I cannot censor opinion pieces. Debates, by default, will be heated, and in each issue I try to include a healthy mixture of different pieces, both academic and opinion. Opinion pieces are inherently meant to stimulate debate, and while I did not go out with the intention of offending anyone by publishing the articles (both pro and anti repeal), I cannot apologise for printing them.
I would like to apologise for statistics in one of the articles which might have been questionable. Certain figures referenced in the magazine, while not flat out incorrect, may have been framed to promote an agenda, and from now on I will be more careful with what I publish in that regard.
At the end of the day, as a student editor and class rep, I have many other responsibilities pertaining to my degree that I have to dedicate time to. I fully intended to publish two anti repeal articles and two repeal ones, but due to certain circumstances that was not a possibility. I can only work with what is handed to me.
With regards to the digitisation of Paddy's Spiel, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Some have suggested that in place of publishing digitally, I could encourage students to pursue other environmentally friendly activities such as abstaining from meat. The reason I am publishing digitally and not campaigning for a college wide eco friendly community is that the digitisation of the magazine is something that is within my means, and something I can actively do in my position.
If anyone has any questions regarding this email, please contact me as soon as possible.
