Dr. McDonald will explore ethics in documentary filmmaking, asking critical questions about ‘informed consent’ and whether a formal code of conduct is truly needed. Congratulations to our Journalism Lecturer, Fiona McGarry, for winning the 'News Story of the Year' at this year's Local Ireland Media Awards!

Fiona received this award for her three-year investigation into defective building materials and pyrite in homes across Clare and the midwestern region. The investigation was published by the Clare Champion between 2020 and 2023.

Congrats to our Journalism and Media Students! Last night at the National Student Media Awards (Smeidas) in Dublin our MAJ and BAJ students won National Website of the Year for Galway Pulse! Michelle Geraghty also won the Virgin Media Belonging Award for her journalism feature on accessibility in Galway's parks.

Law student Tom O'Connor won for Radio Doc of the Year, Radio Production -News and Current Affairs and Radio Journalist of the Year! Well done to all!

Dr Frances McCormack, met with President Michael D. Higgins and Sabina Higgins as part of FW85, a delegation working on projects related to the 85th anniversary of Finnegans Wake . Frances narrates a documentary-style short film about p. 85 of the Wake, to premiere next month.

At a US Senate hearing yesterday our colleague Dr Mei-Ling McNamara's work was referenced. At the hearing regarding Online Harms for Children all the 5 CEOs of the major tech companies were questioned before Congress about their failure to protect children online. Mei-Ling co-authored an article about how tech giant Meta is struggling to prevent criminals from using its platforms to buy and sell children for s*x which was the result of two years investigative work.
