There's Strength In Numbers.

Today I spoke to one of our Bray Lifeline Volunteers who was at an event of a social club she's part of.

And whilst Talking to another member she got concerned about a couple of things she'd mentioned. She leaned on her training and asked the question "are you considering su***de"?

The answer was Yes. And our volunteer was able to talk to her, talk her down make her realise that she didn't want to die but for the pain to stop and circumstances she was in to change.

Today our volunteer got a text to say "Thank you for that chat, you've literally saved my life"

☝️☝️☝️ This is what Strength In Numbers is all about. THIS is why I want to create a community fully aware of the signs of Su***de and how how to talk about.

Community Lifeline is not just about training volunteers to be Su***de Intervention First Responders. It's about educating the entire community in the signs of Su***de in a way that's never been done before

To say that I'm overwhelmed, shocked, humbled would be an understatement.

Thank you so much to those who thought I should win this and nominated me for it. Thank you Bray Chamber who decided I should win this.

What started as a podcast a couple of years ago, turned into a Mental Health Company and now we're building the first of its kind community based Su***de Intervention First Responder Team. To help those in crisis.

Never did I think that I would be nominated nevermind win such an award.

Bray Lifeline is the first of its kind, Su***de Intervention First Responder Team. Meaning that, if someone is in crisis, our team aims to be with you in a matter of minutes to offer support and keep them safe.

But beyond this, We want to deliver our workshop to as many sports and social clubs of all ages in our community. The goal is have at least 1 person in every household in Bray who has the knowledge to spot Suicidal Ideation.

Local volunteers and members of our community have recently been trained in Mental Health & Su***de First Aid. This training now equips them with the tools and knowledge to be a Su***de Intervention First Responder within our community.

This is the first of its kind, anywhere in the world. And Bray is leading the way in this new initiative for su***de prevention.

In 2020 there were 2,115 children waiting on a first appointment with CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) There are now 3681 Children waiting, an increase of 75%

In 2020 there were 223 children left waiting over a year for CAMHS today that number stands at 504, and increase of 126%

In 2020 there were 9689 Children waiting on a waiting list for psychology treatment, today that number stands at 18,368 an increase of 89.5%

We can clearly see that the resources are not there to help those dealing with mental health issues when services cant be accessed by the children in our community when they need it most.

And what is the leading cause of death in ireland for people aged between 15 & 24? You guessed it, Su***de.

nearly 500 Young people die by su***de in our country every year & that is not taking into account the thousands of young people who are presented to A&E with evidence of Self Harm (in most casese these are failed su***de attempts) who are then just left to go home without further psychological treatment or just given a prescription for antidepressants or SSRI's (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)

This is why Bray Lifeline was created. To offer face to face support for everyone in our community how may be contemplating su***de. to help reduce the numbers of self harm incidents in our A&E departments. To be a support network for everyone in our community.

In Ireland, we tragically see approximately 500 deaths by su***de each year, with 80% of these deaths being male and 20% female. Additionally, around 14,000 cases of self-harm are presented to hospitals nationwide every year.

While awareness around su***de prevention has undoubtedly grown, and fundraising efforts have increased—Pieta House's donations doubled to €11.2 million in 2021—the sad truth is that the statistics surrounding su***de and self-harm remain alarmingly stagnant.

So why, despite the millions raised and countless awareness campaigns, do these numbers stay the same?

Because we’re not changing how we do things.

Every year, we raise awareness, we gather the statistics, we fundraise, we walk, we hold coffee mornings—but the numbers don’t shift. We need more than awareness; we need action.

It’s time to make su***de prevention a priority in every community. This is where Bray Lifeline will bridge the gap.

Our goal is to train as many local volunteers as possible in Mental Health & Su***de First Aid, creating Ireland's first community-based Su***de First Responder team. These volunteers will work with existing local groups to ensure every part of our community has someone trained in Su***de First Aid.

Imagine this: Nn May, our community raised over €66,000 for Pieta House during the Darkness Into Light event—a truly phenomenal achievement. But what if everyone who participated in that walk was trained in Su***de First Aid?

Just think of how many lives could be saved, how many instances of self-harm could be prevented.

This is the vision of Bray Lifeline—to have someone trained in su***de prevention in every household. Together, we can make a real, lasting difference in our community.

Lets change the narrative.

By changing the language we use to talk about su***de, we will automatically change the narrative and in turn the stigma that is associated to it.

In 1993, Su***de was decriminalised in ireland under the Criminal Law (Su***de) Act. Yet most people still say "They committed su***de"

By saying they have committed su***de, we inadvertently risk associating individuals fighting mental health challenges with those who have committed a crime, subsequently worsening the stigma surrounding su***de.

Change the language, change the narrative, change the stigma.

Imagine communities all around the country where teams of volunteers are trained in how to support those dealing with Suicidal Ideation.

Communities where those volunteers are minutes away from being face to face with someone in crisis.

Communities and towns that take real action in preventing su***de.

This is our goal.

I know we can't completely eradicate su***de, but collectively we can do so much more to bring the numbers down and save lives in our communities.

Similar to a physical First Aider, or the Cardiac First Reponders, Bray LIfeline is here to support those in crises.

If someone is suicidal, they will have a dedicated number to call & someone from the community, who is trained in Su***de First Aid will be with them in minutes. To listen, to talk to, to help get them to safety.

unlike a traditional Su***de Helpline, Lifeline will offer face to face support for those in crisis.

I am looking for local businesses to sponser a memeber of their staff to become a Lifeline Volunteer. who will work on a ratating shift and be "on call" if someone needs them.

This initiative has never been done anywhere in the world before and I want the businesses of Bray & the whole community to get behind it and prevent su***de in our town.
