Paul Nagle's helmet auctioned for a staggering €25,000

The helmet that Paul Nagle used during the 2021 World Rally Championship winning season was sold for a staggering €25,000 at a charity auction in Tralee on Saturday night.

The auction was part of the Déjà Vu celebration of Kerry motorsport that took place over the weekend.

Cancer charity Recovery Haven is set to be the main beneficiary of the fundraising effort.

Kerry Motor Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and the Déjà Vu road run was the flagship event in the year-long celebration.

Rally stars like current World Rally Championship contender Craig Breen and five-time WRC event winner Kris Meeke participated in a tour of famous West Kerry rally stages on Saturday.

Other famous drivers in the 150-strong entry list included multiple Irish champion Austin MacHale and former European Rally Champion Patrick Snijers from Belgium.

After the road run, 300 people attended a gala dinner at the event’s headquarters, The Rose Hotel.

During the dinner, items were auctioned off. Items included paintings of famous rally drivers, motorsport trips to museums and, of course, the helmet which was signed by almost every top name associated with the World Rally Championship over the last 20 years.

Nearly €40,000 was raised during the auction with the majority of that sum going to Recovery Haven. Nagle will donate a portion of the helmet sale to his home football club, Fossa GAA too.

The helmet was sold to New York-based Irish rally driver Paul Rowley.

An additional €3,500 was raised by individual donations and bucket collections along the route.

“I don’t have the words, we are humbled that we were the chosen charity for this spectacular and fun event,” Recovery Haven’s PR and Marketing manager Marisa Reidy said.

“We met so many wonderful people from the world of rally and they were so generous and kind. Huge thanks too to Kerry Motor Club and the work they did to bring this event to Tralee.”

ustainable Fashion Wins the Day at the and Competition.

Cara Credit Union teamed up with Career Ahead to organise an amazing Clothes Competition aimed at College Students and Secondary School Students nationwide. On Saturday, 28th May, the prizes were presented to the College Student and Secondary School Student who submitted the best outfit from a style perspective and a cost perspective; while at the same time supporting charitable organisations. Social Media Influencers Chloe Koyce and Fashionable Frank were in attendance to meet the winners and present the prizes.

Megan Doyle an MTU Kerry Campus Wildlife Biology Student who originates from Dublin was the winner in the College Student category. Megan’s outfit was a pink jumpsuit (€3.90) and a necklace €1.80), total cost €5.70, both purchased from the Irish Cancer Society Shop. Treasure Vlogs from Scoil Chriost Ri in Portlaise was the winner of the Secondary School Category. Treasure’s outfit was a dress, purchased from Oxfam at a cost of €4.50. Treasure teamed this up with previously owned boots and bag.

“The concept for the competition arose from the fact that I deal with so many students who are surviving on very tight budgets, yet it is expected they dress appropriately for work placements, academic presentations, and college events. The ability to present themselves well also contributes immensely to a student’s confidence and self-esteem, and all students love to shop and dress up for social occasions” said Mary Lucey, Career Ahead.

Commenting further, Siobhan Donnelly Marketing & Development Manager of Cara Credit Union said “Cara Credit Union were delighted to support this unique and creative competition. We are constantly seeking out new ways to support college students and secondary school students. The introduction of our free student current account and debit card is aimed specifically at this cohorts. The competition demonstrated the initiative, creativity, and care for the environment that students possess. It is great that college and school life is come back to normal – and young people can start to get dressed up and socialise again.”
The organisers wish to thank the amazing panel of social media influencers and business representatives who judged the competition – all who are giving up their own time free of charge to support college and secondary school students. Sinead O Brien (SineadsCurvyStyle), Clodagh More, Frank Cronin (Fashionable Frank), Shauna Cashell (StyleSearch), Chloe Koyce and Aoife Sheehy (Corporate Social Responsibility Advisor at Primark) were the judges.

The prize giving lunch was held and sponsored by Ballyseedy Garden Centre. The guests and winners were treated to a makeover before the lunch by Sean Taffee and CH Chemists. The guests got to savour what Tralee has to offer by staying the night and dining in Benner’s Hotel and at Molly J’s. Career Ahead and Cara Credit Union wish to thank all the local businesses for their support with this project. END:

Rose of Tralee International Festival Events to Take Place at Kerry Sports Academy

Munster Technological University and the Rose of Tralee International Festival are pleased to announce that a number of events for this year’s festival will take place at MTU’s Kerry Sports Academy. The venue at MTU’s North Campus in Tralee will be hired out by the festival for events from Friday 19th to Tuesday 23rd August, including the live televised shows to be broadcast on RTE on the Monday and Tuesday evenings, 22nd and 23rd August.

Announcing the one-year venue hire agreement in Kerry today, MTU President Prof. Maggie Cusack commented:

“The Kerry Sports Academy is a state-of-the-art facility and an asset to Tralee and the surrounding region. This is an opportunity to showcase our fantastic venue for a major event that is of such significance to Tralee. MTU has a statutory function to develop and promote strong social and cultural links with the communities in which it is located, and in doing so to respect the diversity of values, beliefs and traditions in Irish society. This was taken into consideration by MTU in agreeing to the venue hire, as was the importance of being inclusive of the festival contestants themselves, and all those for whom the festival is so special.

CEO of the Rose of Tralee, Anthony O’Gara, welcomed the venue announcement saying: “We are delighted that the Rose of Tralee International Festival will be broadcast live from Kerry Sports Academy this year, particularly as the festival was cancelled for the last two years due to the pandemic. This year we are looking forward to welcoming our roses back to Tralee and celebrating together with a five-day festival beginning on Friday August 19th and culminating in the selection of the 2022 International Rose of Tralee live on Tuesday 23rd August.”

TOP WORLD RALLY DRIVERS LEAD DÉjÀ VU TRALEE PARADE.

Craig Breen, who is lying third in the World Rally Championship will lead (subject to his commitments with the M-Sport Team), a spectacular parade of 150 cars on Déjà vu Tralee on Saturday May 28th. Craig hopes to be driving his recently rebuilt ex-Frank Meagher Circuit of Ireland winning Ford Sierra Cosworth RS. Frank was one of Craig's boyhood heroes and this re-build is a tribute to the Tipperary man whose rallying exploits captivated a generation of fans in the 1990s.

You have to come forward a generation and a half to recall number 2 seed Kris Meeke’s first World Rally Championship win with Citroen in Argentina in 2015. The Dungannon driver and his then Killarney co-driver Paul Nagle, who will be in Tralee over the Déjà vu weekend, recorded four more wins with Citroen - Portugal & Finland in 2016 and Mexico & Spain in 2017, before transferring to the Toyota World Rally Team. Kris will be driving his family’s unique Project X four-wheel-drive 2L Opel Corsa and Sydney Meeke, the cars creator will be alongside his son in this 1996 Kit Car. And the Meeke involvement does not end there as Barry Meeke will be in another of Sydney’s creations the Ford Orion that Bertie Fisher, Stephen Finally and the World Championship boxer Barry McGuiggan drove in 1986.

SNIJERS RETURN
We go ‘foreign’, as they say, for our number 3 seed, the seven-times Belgium Rally Champion, Dutch Rally Champion, and European Rally Champion Patrick Snijers. Patrick will drive a Lancia, not an 037 Group B car like he drove in 1983 and 1986, but a 1991 Lancia Delta HF Integrale 16v., thanks to its owner Jonathan Radley. The suave multi-generational driver, (who still competes professionally in the Belgium GT3 series), is best remembered in Ireland for his epic battles on the Lurgan Park Rally with Kenny McKinstry in 1996, Gwyndaff Evans in 1997 and when he beat Mark Higgins on the specialist one-venue event in 1998.

FIRING UP THE MEMORIES
Déjà vu – “a feeling of having already experienced the present situation”, will revive memories of machines and drivers when this key event in the Kerry Motor Clubs 50th anniversary year starts at 10am in The Mall before setting out in their 130 mile route around the Di**le Peninsula. Déjà vu Motorsport is the brain child of two retired rallying enthusiasts Dr. Beatty Crawford and Alan (Plum) Tyndall. Beatty was a well known co-driver in the ‘60s winning the Circuit of Ireland with Adrian Boyd in 1971 and ‘Plum’ a former Irish saloon racing champion is best known for his motorsporting commentaries and his RPM tv show that ran on the major Irish TV channels for 23 years. Déjà vu events have raised over €200,000 for charity since their inception and the Tralee events chosen charity is Recovery Haven Kerry.

1974 CIRCUIT OF IRELAND
Your thoughts may go back to the 1974 Circuit when you glance into the cockpit of Jerry Bailey‘s Lancia Stratos replica as Cathal Curley the winner of that 5-day classic sealed his victory on Slea Head that year, one of the stages he will be taking this dart shaped supercar over. His battle had with Billy Coleman’s Es**rt had ended on the most westerly rally stage in Europe, as the Millstreet driver made a rare mistake and it was plain sailing for the Derryman after that.

Frank O’Mahony and his partner Hugh McPhillips have been corner stones of the rallying community in the south-west for many years. They have been top three finishers on the Rally of the Lakes; the Cork 20 Rally; and the West Cork Rally on numerous occasions, and they were joint Clerks of the Course for the Cork 20 in 2007 when the works Citroen and Ford teams came to call. The two old pals are in Frank’s Mini Cooper S.

Add to the list notables such as Paul Barrett and Gordon Noble in an Es**rt RS 2000, Dennis Biggerstaff, a multiple British Rallycross Champion in an ex-works Subaru Impreza and his son Stuart Biggerstaff a Norther Ireland Rally Champion in a Metro 6R4; David Greer; Conor Falvey in his Porsche 911, and many more rally names and you can see that it will be quite a show.

And the cars! 30 Fords including an RS 200; 16 Porsches; 14 Minis; 11 Subarus; 7 Opels; 6 Toyotas; 5 Lancias, Renaults and Sunbeams; 4 Vauxhalls, BMWs and Audis; 3 Hillmans, Triumphs and VWs; 2 MGs, Jaguars, Fiats, Peugeots and Ferraris - yes a 308 and a fabulous F40; 1 Mitsubishi, Honda, Nissan, Saab and an Aston Martin!

New scheme supporting old traditions in Kerry.

Performances that form part of the 2022 Féile na Bealtaine programme are among over 90 events supported by the Local Live Performance Programming Scheme 3 in Kerry.

Féile na Beataine has become a key moment in Di**le’s festival calendar. It invites performers and visitors from around the world to join in welcoming the light of summer.

“The emphasis of Féile na Bealtaine from the beginning was on nurturing creativity in all.”
Féile na Bealtaine website

The Local Live Performance Scheme 3 has helped to support performances by local Kerry musicians, artists, and performers as part of this year’s programme. Traditional performances have been supported by the scheme as well as new forms of creative experiences such as the Pagan Rave.

The Pagan rave sees costumed figures, based on those of traditional Irish and European folk theatre and festivals, welcome the traditions of the past with a contemporary edge through a primal experience. It will begin in The Mart Carpark on Spa Road at 8.30pm Saturday 30 April. This reimaging of traditional folk rituals and ceremonies gradually blurs the line between performer and audience. It is free and welcomes participants and spectators.

The scheme also supports concerts by local Di**le musicians in St James Church as part of the Féile na Bealtaine programme. Pauline Scanlon & Band will perform twice throughout the day on Sunday 1 May with Cormac Begley & Friends playing later in the evening. Tickets are available from https://feilenabealtaine.ie/

An Díseart will host a rehearsed reading of a new play, Maeveen, inspired by the reopening of the Kerry babies’ case in 2018. The play was written by Michael Hilliard Mulcahy and the cast features; Judith Ryan, Áine Moynihan, Colm MacGearailt & David Herlihy. The performance will take place 8pm Sunday 1 May. Tickets are available from https://feilenabealtaine.ie/

“The festival invites contributors to push boundaries, exploring new venues, experiments with form and collaborate, while remaining true to the festival’s deep roots in a rural community.”
Féile na Bealtaine website

The sand on Ventry Beach will be the stage to Cath Fionn Trá – The Battle of Ventry – at 4pm Sunday 1 May. This free outdoor performance on the beach will feature dancers, musicians; Martin Scharer (percussionist) & Meabh Ní Bheaglaíoch, storytellers & hurlers in a contemporary retelling of the mythological Battle of Ventry in five acts

These are a few highlights from a fantastic programme of events by Féile na Bealtaine. For the full programme, please visit https://feilenabealtaine.ie/

A full list of events supported by the Local Live Performance Programming Scheme 3 is available on the Kerry County Council website.

Kerry Camino walk takes place on May weekend.
The annual Kerry Camino 3-day guided walk of the Di**le Way from Tralee to Di**le will take place on the May Bank Holiday weekend - Friday 29th April to Sunday 1st May. The event has been held every year, with the exception of 2020 when it was cancelled due to Covid restrictions. It was established by a voluntary local group based in Tralee to encourage walking tourism and revive Kerry's links with pilgrims of the past, walking in the footsteps of St. Brendan along the Di**le Way. Participating numbers have grown annually from 30 in 2012 to 350 in 2019.

Over the 3 days walkers pass through rugged, mountaineous and coastal scenery. through towns and villages, stamping logbooks along with way until reaching the final destination of the Spanish built Church of St. James in Di**le, where Certificates of Completions are presented. Whether you come on a pilgrimage of personal faith and renewal, or for the fun and health benefits of a good walk, you are guaranteed an enjoyable and enriching experience in this beautiful part of Kerry. Kerry Camino is both a walker's dream and a path of pilgrimage for the contemplative. The Kerry Camino Walk Weekend is a great social event. Often people might be afraid to tackle such a walk by themselves, but the route is guided all the way along, and no-one gets left behind. A certain level of fitness is required for this 3-day event, with appropriate footwear, clothing, drinks and snacks. Each day's walking takes approx. 5-7 hours and refreshments are provided at the conclusion of each day's walk.

As a voluntary organisation we are very grateful to volunteer members of Tralee Mountaineering Club, Tralee Civil Defence and other local walking enthusiasts who have assisted us in a guiding capacity for our walk weekends since 2012.

If additional information required please contact us on our website, page or send email to Ingrid at: [email protected]. The weekend's itinerary is attached for additional information. Also some recent walk weekend photos are attached.
