We are delighted to return to our Café Culture series of videos with the Glencar teaShed. The video was shot earlier this year in February but we are delighted to see the teaShed reopen last Monday and we are able to share this video with you.

teaSHED has a rather unusual claim to fame – it was voted Most Scenic Place to have a Coffee in Ireland’ (by irelandbeforeyoudie.com) and with very good reason too. Not many cafés can claim to have a glorious 50 foot Glencar waterfall pretty much in the garden! There’s even a footbridge, making access very easy. The teaSHED opened five years ago, but it has a serious pedigree as from the late 1800s to the early 1900s, the owner's great aunts ran a tea house in Glencar. Photographs of the original tea house, along with original visitors' books and artefacts are on display in the teaSHED. It also sells locally produced arts and crafts.

All the delicious baking is home made with the exception of the gluten free items. Favourites amongst customers are some of the old traditional – pavlova, traybakes and homemade soup with brown bread. Afternoon teas are very popular too and the raspberry and white chocolate scones are fitting stars of the baking show. The coffee is an award winning hand roasted coffee from Carrick on Shannon’s Art of Coffee. The range of speciality teas are from The Irish Tea Company, a family run business in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Smoothies and milkshakes were a very popular addition to the menu last year and are beloved of both customers and staff! The café is very child friendly, there’s a playground on the grounds plus of course the waterfall walks for the energetic.

Keep a close eye out for the next video in the Café Culture series. Glencar teaSHED

Celebrating Café Culture on Sligo Food Trail with Osta Cafe and Wine Bar

Ósta Café and Wine Bar on the banks of the Garvogue River is celebrating its 14th birthday in July. Since 2006 Bríd Torrades iconic café has shone a beacon for quality food and local producers. Today that light shines brighter than ever.

Bríd is an avid supporter of local, particularly organic, produce and has been rewarded with recognition by Bord Bia as a Just Ask Restaurant. Their list of suppliers reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ of the northwest’s top growers, farmers and butchers including Lyon’s Bakehouse, Le Fournil, Croghan Farm, Crimlin Farm, Rod Alston, Sheerin’s Butchers, Clarkes Butchers, Andarl Farm, Ballisadare Eggs, Bluebell Farm, Shines Irish Tuna, Gerry Blaine Fishmonger, Dozio’s Cheeses, Knocknaree Honey and Blakes Always Organic.

Ósta was recently shortlisted for the 2020 Georgina Campbell Brunch of the Year award so it’s no surprise that brunch is quite a feast. Served seven days a week, the brunch menu is outstanding. Favourites are Eggs Ósta or Shines Tuna with Poached Eggs served on Boxty. Scones are a perennial favourite and the bakers are up bright and early to have the first batches, still warm and steaming, on the counter at 8am. All cakes are baked in-house, using the best ingredients of course.

Drinks have become a bit of a speciality. Coffee is a serious business here, with fully trained Baristas and a carefully sourced blend of Mexican and Peruvian beans roasted by Java Republic for that essential caffeine kick or an exceptionally delicious decaff coffee blended and roasted by Art of Coffee, Carrick on Shannon. A tempting range of teas and infusions comes from Solaris Teas, Galway and Suki Teas Belfast among others. For something a little different, try homemade Komboucha or Blakes Organic Kefir for delicious gut healthy drinks.

The community side of Ósta is very important and the café is home to Open Art Studio and hosts art events and the Ósta Sessions for music lovers on Thursdays 6-8pm. Poetry by the Weir is on each month, then there’s Irish language conversation, Spanish language conversation … there’s literally always something happening.

Ósta Café and Wine Bar opens at 8am Monday to Saturday and 9am on Sundays and Bank Holidays. It stays open later on Thursdays and it is also available in the evenings for events and private parties.

Who will be next in the Café Culture video series? Watch out for it very soon.

Celebrating Café Culture on Sligo Food Trail with The Jam Pot Cafe

Do you know The Jampot Café in Grange on the Wild Atlantic Way? If not, this video will give you the introduction you need. It’s the latest in Sligo Food Trail’s Café Culture video series and we know you’re going to love it!

Orlaith Conefrey has created a real gem of a café – a bright, warm, welcoming spot with home baking, cracking coffee and an imaginative and enticing menu. Some of the most popular items are her own treasured family recipes – her granny’s boxty and her mother’s brown bread and scones. Sometimes all that’s wanted is a perfect presentation of an old favourite.

Everything at The Jampot is home baked with the very best of ingredients. The cakes are a particular customer favourite and look just beautiful. No wonder they are in demand for occasions like birthdays, anniversaries and weddings.

Breakfast is a feast in this comfy café with the Avocado Toast and French Toast in particular, flying out of the kitchen. Afternoon teas are a popular recent addition. They run from 12-3pm and booking is essential. The newest venture is the Supper Club, which launched for Valentine’s Weekend and judging by its success, there will be a lot more where that came from.

The Jampot is open six days a week (closed Mondays) and they happily cater for all dietary needs – coeliac, dairy free, vegan. Orlaith and her team also make and sell their own jams and chutneys.

Celebrating Café Culture on Sligo Food Trail with Sligo Wellness

Next in our Café Culture video series is Sligo Wellness Centre on Wine Street in Sligo Town owned by Gráinne Gilmartin. A wonderful café serving exceptional food in the heart of Sligo. The thriving deli bar is certified organic and serves everything from a mixed bowl of salad to fresh baking, plant-based soups, frittatas and green smoothies laced with spirulina. Chef Marc Gallagher has brought a wealth of experience and creatively to the kitchen.

As the name suggests, Sligo Wellness Centre isn’t just a café, it’s three floors are home to café/ deli, a range of therapies and the top floor is dedicated to workshops, studio for classes and talks. On ground level the deli bar and health food shop are always buzzing with energy and stock a host of local produce. The food element came about through clients who were constantly looking for fresh organic produce as well as high quality supplements. Grainne has a strong interest in nutrition and firmly believes that what goes into the body has a big effect on it. She found she was recommending food to clients who just weren’t able to find it, so she decided to fill the gap herself. As a chiropractic therapist, food isn’t Gráinne Gilmartin’s passion but good health is and, in her opinion, food is medicine making it the first step to living a healthy life. Put like that, it makes a lot of sense. Everything in the deli has been freshly baked and prepared daily since it opened its doors in 2015.

The deli bar offers daily vegetarian and vegan specials like chickpea curries or hearty veggie stews as well as vegetarian lasagne, homemade organic oat bread, oat scones and banana bread. They also serve a wide range of drinks including Oatly cappuccinos, turmeric lattes and organic smoothies. The staff favourite is a cacao hit smoothie. Packed with delicious organic nut butter, dates, banana, raw cacao and almond milk, it’s guaranteed to give an energy boost! Local suppliers include The Tattie Hoaker, The Organic Centre, Blakes Always Organic, Carrowgarry Farm, Murson Farm and The Irish Tea Company.

Celebrating Café Culture on Sligo Food Trail with WB's Coffee House & Deli Bar

Second in our video series on fabulous cafés on Sligo Food Trail is WB’s Coffee House in the heart of Sligo Town. Named for none other than WB Yeats, it’s easy to see why this modern café is a favourite with locals and visitors alike.

Aisling Kelly has just celebrated five years in business and she certainly hasn’t let the grass grow under her feet. As well as serving delicious home made food, she has opened the Sligo Oyster Experience within the café, a Oyster menu, a new retail space, music sessions, workshops and will soon be launching her new tours. WB’s Coffee House has garnered some pretty impressive awards in its short life including Best New Business (Sligo Business Awards), John and Sally McKenna and the Georgina Campbell Awards.

Aisling is proud to have a loyal team of staff, many of whom have been with her since the doors opened. Their favourite WB treat is a salted caramel latté which definitely sounds worth trying. Their signature dishes at WB’s are the home baked raspberry scone and Bakewell tart, which are glorious versions of traditional favourites. Taste them and you’ll see what we mean.

👉 First stop is Pudding Row in Easkey

We have some incredible cafés on Sligo Food Trail and we want to tell the world about them.

Pudding Row in Easkey is first up and as you can see from this new video, it’s got lots going for it. Opened five years ago by Easkey native Dervla James and her husband J***y Conlon, Pudding Row has become a destination café on the Wild Atlantic Way.

Dervla has brought all her experience garnered in Dublin’s iconic Cake Café, The Pepper Pot and a stint in Germany, to this cosy, café and bakery. All the tempting breads and cakes are baked in house every day. They are proudly committed to local, organic produce where possible using Carrowgarry Farm for organic fruit, veg and salad leaves and Andarl farm in Mayo provide free Range Pork and bacon. Free range eggs come from Woodville Farm and award winning local honey from Zoe Lally in Rathlee.

Pudding Row has received a slew of awards including Cafe of the Year in the Irish Restaurant Awards, Vogue Magazine Editor’s Choice, McKenna Guide’s Café of the Year and an appearance on the McKenna Guide's Top 100 Restaurants every year since opening.

Their signature dish is a stunning pear and bacon sandwich on homemade white bread. Food writer John McKenna says "I'd walk all the way to Easkey for a slice of Dervla's Victoria Sponge!" … and who are we to argue?

Sligo Folk Park

Sligo Folk Park

Bring your little monsters to the Sligo Folk Park this Halloween for our spooky, fun event. 👻👻👻

Book Online: www.sligofolkpark.com/halloween-scare-in-the-park/

It’s packed to the gills with scary skeletons, ghosts, ghouls and (slightly) frightening fun for everyone, particularly 2-12 year olds. It’s a chance for the whole family to dress up in their most creative costume (there’s prizes) and enjoy scares, dares and fearsome fare in Riverstown. New this year is the Scarecrow Competition.

A tour of the Folk Park takes on a new dimension when Halloween is in the air. There’s something scary around every corner. Watch out for the Mad Doctor in The Forge. Let your hair down at the Monster Jams Disco in the Street. Harry Potter fans will love the chance to enrol at the Hogwarts themed schoolroom. Hear the hair raising tale of the White Lady, the real Folk Park ghost, said to haunt Millview House. Join in some weird and wonderful workshops – make your own skeleton or a Halloween lantern. Get your face painted in a ghoulish manner. Don’t forget to enjoy some toasted marshmallows (not haunted!) and chocolate apples as well as trick or treat sweets and lollies.

The “Unshin Witch” will tell (slightly) spinechilling tales in her cottage. The Pumpkin Carving Display is alarming art at its very best and the creepy concoctions of Witches Magic Potions could just cast a spooky spell. Or listen to storytelling in the spooky forest. It’s all for fun though, some tricks (but not many) and plenty of treats for everyone. The Blood Café will also be open for beverages and treats.

**** Scarecrow Competition****
Everyone is invited to join in the Scarecrow Competition, there’s no entry fee and all ages are welcome to take part. All you have to do is make your own scarecrow (they must be homemade) and bring it to Sligo Folk Park on Thursday 24th, Friday 25th or Tuesday 29th October from 9am-4pm. Make it as an individual, with your family or with a group you’re involved with – a sports team, dance or music group , business or school. All scarecrows will be on display at Scare in the Park and the judging and prize presentation will take place on the day.

Entry to "Scare in the Park" is just €7 per child and adults are free. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Under two years old are free of charge.
