Póg mo Pigeon - Official Teaser

In case you hadn't heard, Póg mo Pigeon will have its world premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh!

The festival kicks off next Tuesday, and Póg will screen during the New Shorts programme on Sunday 14th July at 12:00 in Town Hall Theatre. Tickets available on Fleadh website.

In Póg mo Pigeon, Mikey’s new friend, Pidgey, follows him home for family prayer time. Unfortunately, the sanctity of Mammy’s sitting room is no place for a chaotic pigeon. And Pidgey’s got an eye on Mammy’s prized possession – The Sacred Heart.

What happens next will change things for Mikey forever.

We're delighted to announce that Póg mo Pigeon has made the Official Selection at this year's Galway Film Fleadh, and will have its world premiere at the festival.

Congratulations to all who worked on Póg mo Pigeon, and thanks to the Fleadh for recognising the affecting story of Mikey and Pidgey.

It's a special moment for us - and here's a little bit about how the film was made.

Póg mo Pigeon is the first short from Lighthouse director, Clíodhna Lyons, a talented artist and illustrator whose work to date includes assistant directing El Deafo and Rick and Morty.

Clíodhna worked closely with writer Polly Holland, who also animated the film alongside a team of talented artists led by animation director, Tiago Rovida and animation lead, Allie MacQueen.

Polly pitched the idea to the studio during an in-house open call, and had joined us fresh out of college, battling stiff competition from over 25 artists who presented their ideas to us. Since then Polly's been a core member of our animation team and is currently working on Light of the World, our upcoming feature from directors John Schafer and Tom Bancroft.

Polly's concept is based on real-life events from her dad's childhood in 1970s Ireland, though the team took some liberties in its retelling.

We love the poster that Clíodhna created - it captures an ominous feel that becomes even more meaningful by the time the credits hit.

Over the coming week or so we'll be creating almost as much fuss as the chaotic Pigeon at the heart of the story, so stay 'tooned' for more info about Póg mo Pigeon and the people who created it.

👀 First look at Póg mo Pigeon!

Some of you may remember a while back we announced that we would be developing a short film based on a concept pitched to us during an in-house open call.

That concept came from Polly Holland, who got the idea from a story her dad told her about his childhood in West Cork.

Last year we moved into production stages, and the film was finished earlier this year. It is the debut short from director, Clíodhna Lyons, and is also the studio's first release from our development slate. Exciting!

Without getting too deep into the plot and its themes, let's just state this now - this one's not for the kids...

Here's a first look at two of our main characters, Mikey and Pidgey, as well as a third whose role is more central than you may think - Mammy's beloved Sacred Heart portrait.

Annecy is always one of our favourite events to attend.

Each year we catch up with people we haven't seen in a while, share stories of what we're working on and get inspired by the talks and screenings - and all in an idyllic setting!

This year we also got to celebrate the success of Kilkenny's first animation studio - and our sister studio - Cartoon Saloon.

Congratulations to the entire team on 25 years of beautiful animation, multiple Academy Award nominations (we've lost track at this stage!) and, of course, storytelling that will survive for generations to come.

Congratulations to Clíodhna Lyons who has recently taken on the official title of Director at Lighthouse Studios!

In the four years since joining LHS, Clíodhna has assistant directed the BAFTA-winning El Deafo alongside Director, Gilly Fogg, and later fulfilled this position on Rick and Morty S7.

Clíodhna recently stepped into the director’s role for the studio’s first short, Póg mo Pigeon, based on a concept by Polly Holland who pitched the idea during an in-house open call in 2020. (Those of you who've been following our page since then may remember!) Póg mo Pigeon was completed in March and now enters its festival circuit. Stay tooned for a first look, very soon....

Clíodhna is now working on the next season of Rick and Morty, and will be co-directing the studio’s upcoming series, Savage Town, alongside a well-known Irish director - more news to come soon, so watch this space!

Alongside these accolades, Clíodhna is also a talented artist, animator and cartoonist.

Clíodhna is a fantastic colleague who articulates her vision and ideas with clarity, integrity and respect. It’s a pleasure to work with you, Clíodhna!

Our head creative, Gilly, is off to Cannes for a two-day creative design sprint!

Gilly is one of 40 participants from 10 different countries, all of whom work in music, film or emerging tech. During the creative design workshop, participants will use design thinking to tackle creative challenges head-on, applying AI tools and emerging tech to quickly generate innovative solutions that enhance traditional storytelling and create innovative narrative experiences.

The workshop is being run as part of the T.A.B. (Tech, Art & Business) project, which was set up to create an international platform for knowledge and experience exchange, enabling the identification of trends and innovations at an early stage.

T.A.B. is financed by Interreg South Baltic through the European Regional Development Fund.

We are now seeking an experienced scene prep supervisor to work with us on an exciting new 2D feature. The supervisor will provide creative and technical guidance to our team of scene prep artists, and can look forward to working with some of the very best talent in the industry.
