Swan River Press

Swan River Press Ireland’s only publishing house dedicated to literature of the gothic, fantastic, strange and supe Showers. "Handsome, beautifully made volumes . . .

We are Ireland's only small press dedicated to literature of the fantastic. Named for the now subterranean waterway that flows through the bustling neighbourhood of Rathmines, Dublin's Swan River Press was founded in 2003 by author and editor Brian J. Since its inception, the press has specialised in literature of the Gothic, strange, and supernatural, with an emphasis on Ireland's past and presen

t contributions to the genre. In Spring 2013 we launched our flagship journal The Green Book: Writings on Irish Gothic, Supernatural and Fantastic Literature. This twice-yearly publication is a much-needed venue in which to explore and celebrate Irish genre literature in all its guises. All of our publications, both inside and out, are attractively designed with an aim towards enhancing the reader's experience. Our hardbound editions feature dustjackets, printed boards, sewn binding, head and tail bands, and are lithographically printed on high-quality paper. Our chapbooks and booklets are assembled and sewn by hand unless otherwise noted. altogether irresistible."

-Michael Dirda, The Washington Post

"Each [book] is produced in an edition of 400 copies with full colour dust jackets, and they are among the most attractive volumes to come to me for review, the care that has gone into their making and design self-evident. Publisher Brian J. Showers has served his authors magnificently."

-Peter Tennant, Black Static

"Swan River Press has emerged as one of the most inspirinng new presses over the past decade. Not only are the books beautifully presented and professionally produced, but they aspire consistently to high literary quality and originality, ranging from current writers of supernatural/weird fiction to rare of forgotten works by departed authors."

-Peter Bell, Ghosts & Scholars

Greetings, everyone. Thank you for joining me here at the end of another solar cycle, taking time out of your day to read this meditation on what we did here at Swan River Press these past twelve months. I confess, for much of it, my attention has been on settling myself in Æon House and […]

Today is the 20th anniversary of Swan River Press. I started the press in 2003 almost as an afterthought. The first few publications were palm-sized, hand-sewn chapbooks, written by myself and illustrated by Duane Spurlock, Jeff Roche, and Meggan Kehrli (who still designs our hardbacks). The idea wa...

Excavating Oblivion: In Conversation with Iain Sinclair:

In Conversation with Iain Sinclair Matthew Stocker: I honestly didn’t know how to open this interview, then yesterday I was in a restaurant with my children and wife and I spotted beside many bits of Joyce paraphernalia a quote; “I want to give a picture of Dublin so complete that if the city su...

In today's Washington Post:

Sinclair’s “Agents of Oblivion,” beautifully produced by Swan River Press, showcases one of the supreme prose stylists of our time. Set in bohemian London’s demimonde, four perambulating narratives blend autobiography, fiction and essay as they circle around the works and afterlives of Algernon Blackwood, Arthur Machen, J.G. Ballard and Lovecraft. Comics legend Alan Moore also puts in an appearance.
(Swan River )

Nobody can do more with a sentence’s cadence, diction and imagery than Sinclair. “Seated figures in the steaming cafe, intent as Cézanne’s card players, contemplate cheese sandwiches, their dogs restless on the floor.” “Questing book collectors can never, despite the best of bad intentions, go hunting together, when it comes to the kill.” “There was something cruel about the siting of the hospital at the crest of the hill. The halt and the lame were scattered across the nursery slopes, clutching at gateposts, clawing at hedges, crawling toward shelters where buses did not pause.”

New releases in the genre mastered by H.P. Lovecraft, Robert Aickman and others include ‘Dream Fox,’ by Rosalie Parker

From an outside perspective, Swan River Press has probably looked very quiet this year, reduced to a trickle. Though we didn’t publish as much within these last twelve months as I had planned, the year was still a significant one behind the scenes, hopefully positioning us for a more (outwardly) e...

I mentioned in our September newsletter that Swan River Press would be moving in October. That hectic week is now upon us! I will remain in Dublin, but will be moving to ÆON HOUSE, a small, Edwardian cottage in a secluded and less frequented quarter of the inner city. The house is situated between a maternity hospital and a local funeral parlour....

THE GREEN BOOK 20 is due to be delivered today from the printer; I'm taking pre-orders now and hope to get everything in the post next week. This will be the last publication we post from this address before moving to Æon House in October.

With this issue, we offer another ten profiles of Irish writers of gothic, supernatural, and fantastic fiction. The two most notable writers this issue—and therefore lengthiest entries—are, of course, Charlotte Riddell (1832-1906) and Bram Stoker (1847-1912). Along with names like Charles Maturi...
