‘A fact-finding tour was arranged by Advantage Austria for a group of twenty-one construction professionals from Denmark and Ireland to Styria and Upper Austria earlier this year. The Athlone Greenway Bridge was officially opened in August 2023, a pedestrian and cyclist bridge crossing the River Shannon in Athlone Town.

The new pedestrian and cyclist bridge in Galway opened in May 2023 and was christened Droichead an Dóchais in April 2024 after a public competition.

The Athlone Greenway Bridge connects the historic Castle Quarter to the Athlone Town Centre shopping area and is only the second crossing over the River Shannon in Athlone accessible by foot or bicycle. Walking westward across the bridge, the structure aligns perfectly with the dome of the church of Ss. Peter and Paul, framing it so seamlessly that it feels as if the bridge has always belonged there.
