When we talk about su***de, it's really important that we use the right language.
In Ireland and beyond, su***de was a sin & a crime up to fairly recently. Thanks to the hard work of dedicated activists, advocates, volunteers and professionals, this isn't the case anymore. People who have died by su***de did not commit anything.

When we, as a society discarded some of the harmful beliefs we held around su***de, we forgot to discard the harmful language too, and some of it still lingers...

The word commit is often used to describe a negative behavior or as a punishing word. People experiencing suicidal thoughts might often seek out safe individuals to talk to about how they're feeling...

Using the best, most inclusive and kindest language we can could let that person know that you're a safe person to talk to, you're not going to judge them.
People in your life are listening to how you speak about what you speak about. Be mindful of that, always.

Is all su***de prevention content "good content"?

These are things not taught in school or via awareness campaigns. It is one of those things that people can take a lot of value from, if spoken about in the right way.

"As children we are encouraged to socialise and make new friends. At the time, we simply enjoy meeting new people and exploring the world together. It’s not until later in life that we realise just how important those relationships were to us."

Longitudinal research on child development clearly demonstrates that one of the single greatest indicators for how a child may develop in relation to happiness and social/emotional development, car…

If you're in a reading slump, or you've wanted to start reading but find it intimidating - start small, read 10 pages a day and work your way up.

Reading has so many positive benefits. You don't need to read Shakespeare or Charles Dickens (in fact, please don't). Read whatever you find keeps you engaged.

If you don't know where to start, we have a Mental Health Hour booklist here: https://mentalhealthhour.ie/the-booklist/ which might help get you started!
