I want to begin by thanking Anca Lupu, CEO of the NewCommunities Partnership for the invitation to open theexhibition "New Shades of Green" which is to highlight thecontribution made by members of Ireland's new communities tothe development of the New Community Partnership.At the time the New Communities Partnership was established,Ireland was attracting increasing numbers of people fromdifferent parts of the world who were eager to start a new lifehere. It was a time of optimism and opportunity for most but,for some, the transition was not an easy one. Difficulties suchas a language barrier, or perhaps a lack of knowledge about theeducation system or of the rights and entitlements under Irishlaw impacted on some feeling vulnerable and isolated. The NewCommunities Partnership plays an important role in terms ofproviding information, advice and support to many of those whoare new to Ireland and unfamiliar with Irish society and how itoperates. The economic and social climate in Ireland has changed considerably in the thirteen years that the NewCommunities Partnership has been in existence. However, thePartnership has been successful in continuing to respond to theneeds of those who seek out its services and must be applaudedfor that. One of the services provided by the New CommunitiesPartnership is the Citizenship Application Support Service(CASS).
