Top of Mind - March 10th
Pictured: Excessively building and designing with the 3D printer to make a Lego storage system. While the back garden finally gets some love and some use. On a scarier note, an attempted break-in on Wednesday night left us a bit spooked but everyone safe.

Very much a mixed bag last week with me balancing coming up to a mid-term break and all the assignments and work that that entails, as well as continuing to learn 3D modelling for printing and design.

I'm very pleased with the modular Lego storage unit I've created though which can be added to infinitely, has removable drawers and each of those has removable compartments for pieces. Even the logo on the top is 3D printed and it really makes tidying up Anna's favourite hobby really easy.

We also got a chance to finally make some use of our little garden and, although putting ornaments and accessories out was the most important thing, Anna also helped to scrub the dirty patio tiles and clean the place up a little bit.

Most of the weekend was then spent either out there or constructing her own little dioramas inspired by a Lego YouTuber which she follows. These distractions gave me the chance to do some painting and patching as well as rewiring some cables and updating some systems that I'd put on the long finger.

On a more serious note, we did have a bit of a scare on Wednesday night. While I was out of the house, the doorbell suddenly rang and it turns out someone had been going along the road trying doors and windows to see if they could get access.

The doorbell and the noise inside the house must have spooked them as they ran off, only to return shortly afterwards and completely smash and remove the Ring doorbell camera. I suspect they thought that this would give them the footage, but that ain't how cloud storage works.

Thankfully Anna slept through the whole thing, including the Gardai arriving and taking the details from MH. All safe and sound thankfully and doorbell replaced...

Top of Mind - March 3rd
Pictured: Anna orienteering and trekking through the Phoenix Park as part of her 'Eachtra' (Life Adventure). She was very proud of all the sandwiches she made for the picnic with the rest of the kids. Meanwhile, she and I created a 'doodle robot' together.

Once again the primary focus of the week was on all of Anna's activities and events. Where she gets the energy from I'll never know as I'm exhausted just being on the sidelines. As part of a milestone celebration, in lieu of a confirmation or other ceremony, many of the kids in her school are participating in an Eachtra or adventure to mark them in their life journey.

With this in mind this week was a trek in the park with a picnic and litter picking. Everyone pitched in to do or make something and Anna went all out on the sandwiches and really didn't want to leave the woods at the end of the session.

We had a long enough walk back, but got to see some deer up close and Anna talked about orienteering and has adopted a new walking stick. There's another session for this at the end of March, which will be a little more formal, but it's good that she's feeling part of the community and doing these things with her peers.

The obsession with technology continues though and we made our first proto-type robot out of a paper cup, some pens and a small motor. All this does so far is wobble around a table and draw squiggles on sheets of paper, but it's a start and hopefully will lead to more science and technology soon.

I'm now counting down the days until my term break as I'm definitely burning the candle at both ends and could do with a little break and would love some time to do some little bits around the house. This week I'm debating doing a 2 hour class on Arduino devices and smart home technology. Mostly as a refresher, but might give me some ideas for the house.

In the meantime I'm reaching out this week to potential guest speakers for some of my modules so watch out I could be calling!

Top of Mind - February 24th
Pictured: As Anna's school was off for the week, there was lots and I mean lots of Lego in the house being built as well as some new stylish glasses, even more Lego and my new storeroom setup with a PC attached to the wall for easy use and 3D printing.

A whole week off school meant that we needed to have lots of activities and events on the agenda. While I was still working, the girls were busy trekking around town getting some fancy new clothes and a new pair of glasses for Anna which are a big hit.

They also took in some exhibits in the Ark in Temple Bar, mostly focused on wildlife and the Netflix cartoon Puffin Rock, but there was also play dates and more to keep Anna occupied. The week flew by but I think she needed the little break from school.

We also had my cousin Seamus and his wife Sarah visit us along with Mamie-Phil for some nibbles at the house on Saturday. Anna thought the buffet was lovely and insists that now we do more of this and have family over more often.

The main focus of the week was Lego though as Anna decided to rebuild all her Lego Friends sets and put together all the people and accessories she could find. To help out I've been 3D printing storage boxes to sort and organize the pieces and hopefully by the end of this week we'll have a place for everything.

This also gave me the excuse to update my tech setup in the storeroom where I mounted an old mini-PC and a touchscreen monitor so that now I can more easily monitor and send jobs to the nearby 3D printer. It's a bit of a gimmick but both screen and PC were sitting idle, so at least now they have a function.

I'm feeling a little fatigued the last week or so, so I'll be taking it easy after work for most of this week and finishing off some little projects at home while learning about TTL/RS232 cables and more so that I can finish adding some old 'dumb' devices to the smart home setup. Other than that I'll probably catch up on TV and a couple of movies...

Pictured: Weekend dismatling and reinstalling the alarm system at the house. Myself and Anna built like engineers with a Crunchlabs box and since her celebrations weren't enough we had dinner in Mi Casa for her actual birthday. Plus more 3D printing...

One final birthday gift arrived on Wednesday from Mami-Phil who arranged for a 3 month subscription for Crunchlabs for Anna. This is a monthly build box from YouTuber Mark Rober where she learns and builds and explores science alongside the videos and something she's really embraced with excitement.

Uncle Dave & Auntie Jo also sent along a full collection of 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' books, so this was a very elongated birthday for Anna but she's delighted and I love that it's books and educational material.

On the day itself we asked Anna to choose a restaurant for a little meal and, unlike most kids who would choose fast food or something like that, our Anna's choose our favourite tapas place, Mi Casa who treated us like royalty and as ever stuffed us with yummy food. Off this week, she will head to the zoo, shop and craft things at home.

In the meantime, I took the weekend to try and fix some last minute bits and bobs in the house, starting with the home alarm system. When we moved in we didn't get the master code so we couldn't change the pin or anything else. I wasn't prepared to pay an installer silly money to come out and service or reset it, so I went ahead and did it myself.

I was pleasantly surprised that it went with very little issues and I now ave full control over the security and have tweaked and tailored some of the settings to my liking all without breaking anyting. Now I want to work on making it smart and integrating it into my other system...

As a diversion I've continued to play with the 3D printer and I'm getting reasonably good at the 2 dimensional printed 'photos'. I've had a lot of interest in these so I'm playing around with a small Etsy shop. Why not says I...?

Pictured: Preparations for Anna's 8th birthday party where the house was full of energetic kids on Sunday. My latest 3D printed idea, a door sign in the style of Dublin street signs. Anna featured on the Gaiety School socials & Mammy-Johanna visitiing.

The house surprisingly survived the enslaught of a big bunch of Anna's friends on Sunday afternoon for her birthday party. With activities with crafts, jewelry and pizza making there was lots of excitement and activity but a good time seemed to be had by all.

Her actual birthday isn't until this Wednesday, but the celebrations were the most important thing so had to take place at the weekend. On the day itself though she's requested a family meal out so win-win for everyone.

We also had Mammy-Johanna visiting for the weekend to help out with the festivities and Anna got to do some movie times, cookie baking and Lego with her and myself and MH got to chll out for a while before the party itself.

Elsewhere, Anna was delighted to have been featured on the social media pages for the Gaiety School of Acting, and the photo thankfully was taken before one of her front baby teeth fell our this week! :D

I've meanwhile been playing around with some ideas for 3D printed gifts and products and created a custom 3D printed door sign / fridge magnet designed to replicate the blue street signs in Dublin. This, along with a few other ideas, I'm considdering popping on an etsy store and seeing if I can at least cover the costs of running the machine.

This week though I'll be trying to catch up on some sleep following a couple of long weeks and looking to get all my reports and paperwork up to date so that I can focus on some of my own ideas ike the above and also take some time with Anna for her actual birthday day.

I think that with the recent 'stabbing incident' in Stoneybatter I'll be a little more cautious walking around for a while, but thankfully this didn't disrupt the party or kids on Sunday.

Pictured: Some Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations both in the neighbourhood and at home with some yummy food, along with movie nights at home for the long weekend, some sporty activities and dressing for the occasion with Anna's finest red outfits...πŸ˜„

Another busy week for Anna with some school celebrations of the Chinese New Year which she really enjoyed and fully embraced the food and activities and had some amazing Asian food on several days over the weekend, further expanding her already impressive palate.

We took a stroll over to Hill Street over the weekend to take in some of the activities and shows that were on for the occasion and, dispite a long queue for candyfloss, it was really enjoyable and great to see things like this in the community.

It was very beneficial though to have a long weekend for all of us as we're all back in the swing of school, activities and sports so we all felt the tiredness as we get settle into our routines. Having said that Anna was still taking every opportunity to get to the park, playground and even in our garden to get some exercise and sport in.

In the evenings we chilled out with some Disney+ and discovered the Decendants movies, which for those who don't know are about the sons and daughters of Disney Villans who go to school with the kids of the heroes. Very cheesy Disney channel stuff, but Anna really loved the singing and dancing as well as the colourful costumes and sets so that's the important thing.

We found some plastic popcorn boxes to go along with the movie nights and really tried to make it a cinema style experience. Also good to take a little break from her binge watching Star Trek! πŸ˜‹

For me, I got some time to play with some servers and virtual machines and redo some of the smart home tech in the house and get things the way I wanted them and messing about with integrating them all together. This week we're gearing up for Anna's birthday which will keep us all very busy...

Pictured: Back lecturing at the NCI and hitting the ground running, meanwhile we weathered the storms over the weekend by building forts and watching Star Trek TNG as well as discovering a new card game, Unstable Unicorns which Anna is now an expert in.

There was a real system shock for me heading back to work last week after a full month off. On top of that I have a significant number of modules this term so I had to be well prepared and ready to go. Although it wasn't a full week I came out feeling exhausted and was almost glad the the storm meant we were kept in.

Thankfully we had no damage from the winds, although I was a little worried about our new shed for a bit, everything is still standing and, other than not being able to sleep we seem to have 'weathered' it quite well.

It was a little frustrating for Anna that she couldn't get out and we were making do with the food in the fridge, but all was made betterr by creating a fort in the living room where she could 'shelter' as well as poke her head out and watch Star Trek The Next Generation, a new favourite.

We also, finally had a chance to try one of the card games we got at Christmas and very quickly became addicted to 'Unstable Unicorns'. A little like exploding kittens, but with a unicorn twist and Anna has since become very good at some evil moves. :P

I also took the opportunity to reorganise my store room and set up some more smart lights. The whole house is now smart light controlled which appeases my OCD while also making life easier for all of us. Really delighted I can automate the expensive recess lights that were here when we moved in rather than having to replace them.

Now all I need to do is figure out the network cabling in the place and I'll be really deligthed. That and getting rid of one of the inner doors that I've taken off the frame to make a more open kitchen. In the place 4 months now and still some little jobs to be done, but it's still an amazing place!

Pictured: Anna's custom made guitar as part of her class instrument making, while at home I finish off some geeky house DIY tasks and reinstall my 3D printer. Meanwhile we admire the sky above our new home and Anna makes the most out of the weekend fun.

So, back in college this week teaching, starting of with ICT for Accounting and Finance, so I was very glad of a quiet week last week where the focus was on crafts, DIY and getting some of my pet projects done. For starters, I finally got a plug socket installed in my storeroom, so was able to move the 3D printer in there and set up the ventilation above it to keep the heat down. Now it's next to all my tools and out of the living room.

At the same time I wanted to get some Amazon Alexa devices sunk into the walls around the house, again starting with the storeroom, and now I have them in practically every room. There were also some normal house jobs like changing locks and painting and plastering, but it kept me from over thinking content and stuff for this coming term.

We've been greeted by some amazing skies above the house in the last few days and we really feel like we're fully settled in the place at this point even if I still have a small list of things to get done.

Anna had play dates, parties and a host of activities over the week and showed off her crafting skills by creating a fantastic and somewhat playable guitar in class as well as some jewellery at a friends house, before chilling out at home with her new sleep mask which she can't sleep without.

I'm hoping that this term will be less of a scramble to write and create content as I'm teaching classes I've done previously, so other than some tweaks and updates, it would be ideal if I can rely on what I have already and focus on delivery and helping students.

It's been a long break and it's strange to be back at work, but there's some interesting things on the horizon this semester so going in with optimism and energy...

Pictured: With Anna being back at school, the house seemed a little more quiet. She's excited to be back and made some plans and challenges for the new year. Meanwhile I 3D modelled parts to fix things around the place house and did lots of board games.

As mentioned, this was a pretty normal week with me staying mostly at home to do some bits and bobs. I had some more prep work to do in advance of going back lecturing next week, so my eyes are getting a little square staring at the monitor all the time, so I've been taking the chance to practice some 3D modelling and was very pleased with my remake of a broken part for one of my blinds which worked, but I need to make it a bit thicker to withstand the force on it.

It's really getting to the stage where I can fix and replace lots of things around the place and this will be the real use case for the 3D printer and once my next shipment of filament arrives I'll be spending lots of time churning things out so that I can improve the house.

Meanwhile, Anna is back at school and has made some 'challenges' for 2025 including hopefully getting a puppy and helping the plant get rid of pollution. Some high hopes there so but her heart is in the right place.

It was exciting and also a bit overwhelming to go back, so in the evening there was plenty of playing and lots of board games to keep her mind active and help with the transition back to the routine. She's already got plenty of birthday parties and playdates scheduled so I'm sure she'll be fine. Also signed up for Karate for the term, so I'm interested to see how she gets on with that.

I'm both apprehensive and excited about going back to work. It was a bit of a longer holiday time wise, but it was broken up with prep work and this week there'll be plenty of meetings before I go back into the lecture theatres.

This week I also got to get out twice to catch up with people I hadn't seen in a while, so it was good to spend time in good company.

Pictured: Lots of post Christmas crafts with some of the presents Anna received as well as me doing some 'crafts' also making new durable boxes for some of our card games. Elsewhere a trip to the zoo where I fed some Robins and 2nd Ice skating adventure.

With the grandparents gone home and the house returning to some semblance of normality following the Christmas excitement, we still took a few chances to get some last minute holiday activities in before the school terms start again.

Anna was busy making and crafting from loads of the gifts she got over the holiday, and pictured she's making her own planet lamp which she painted and decorated herself. This was combined with lots of Lego, drawing and building over the last few days.

With a little bit of cabin fever setting in we took a chilly but needed walk up to Dublin Zoo where most of the animals were in doors, but the highlight was a little Robin which seemed to be unfazed by us and ate cracker crumbs practically out of my hand on a bench.

Anna also insisted that, given she'd had so much fun the first time, we go back to the ice skating in Smithfield and this time she was gliding away with much less assistance! (As was I :D)

We had the pleasure of company from an old friend from when I was a kid and her family for lunch during the week which is becoming another annual tradition, and I got to expand my cult of 3D printing enthusiasts with them as they've purchased the same one I've been using following seeing it here before.

Mentioning the 3D printer, I've now racked up 1000 hours of print time on the machine in only a couple of months as it's running pretty much non-stop and the latest idea is to make custom boxes to keep our card games safe along with all the other organisation tools and designs I've been rolling out in the house.

It wasn't all fun and games though as I had 180+ assignments to mark for last Friday, which now are done and I just need to prep for the new term...

Pictured: Family Christmas dinner with the French side, our first Chrismas in the new house. Anna going ice-skating for the first time and loving it. Amazing dinner with close friends at PHX Bistro before the break and everything all ready for Santa...

With the French grandparents still with us we had a low key but lovely Christmas in the house and loved that we had the place all ready and the way we wanted it before the celebrations began. The usual excess of amazing food was had and everyone pitched in to help with various bits and dishes over the few days of the celebrations.

We took advantage of the Smithfield Market winter festival and Anna insisted on trying ice-skating for the first time and didn't do too badly aside from one time we all fell, but I think I came out the worst with a big bruise on my leg, otherwise it was a great experience.

We enlarged our French contingent by joining Half of Carla, Vincent & Brannach, along with their visiting family in a now annual tradition of dinner at PHX Bistro. This gave Anna the chance to chat with the little guy and the in-laws the chance to mingle while the Irish side of the table waffled about unimportant but fun things.

The house itself was all set up well in advance of the visit of the big man in the red suit and Anna took a lot of care and attention to put up all the decorations as well as prepping carrots, milk and cookies. To our surprise she was super patient the next morning and waited for everyone before handing out wrapped presents to everyone while opening her own.

Anna later told me that her favourite part was seeing the excited look on peoples faces as they opened their own gifts, even more so than opening her own which was a lovely sentiment and one I hope she keeps. Having said that she was delighted with the things she got even though she was more conservative with her Santa list this time around.

We all had a lovely few days, and hope everyone reading had a Merry Christmas!

Pictured: Anna and I go to a Taylor Swift tribute concert as well as getting in the annual Gaiety Panto and experiencing the Dublin Zoo Wild Lights, and for added measure, Marie-Helene's parents join us for the first Christmas break in the new house...

Last week was full of activities, and of course the school break is now in effect so we wanted to take in as many of the events around the city as we could, starting with the new annual tradition of the Gaiety Panto which is always a huge hit.

We also took a walk around Dublin Zoo for the annual light show and this year was a walk through the history of earth from the big bang up to the present day. Chilly but really pleasant and thankfully not too busy.

Marie-Helene's parents joined us on Wednesday from France so they got to join us for that as well as some Christmas shopping so my brain is getting used to thinking in French for the holiday period, but Anna in particular is loving having Mamie & Pappi-Doo in the house and Mamie is particularly good at playing Barbie apparently.

Over the weekend a trip to Dun Laoghaire was in order so that they could do some pottering around, but primarily so that I could join Anna and one of her friends at an all ages Taylor Swift tribute. I thought Anna would stay with me towards the back, but she was straight up to the front of the stage leaving me holding the coats and bags so she had a ball.

I'm looking forward to both some down time and also some time to mess about with some 3D printing and some IT projects, but I've also still got 200+ assignments from college to grade which will keep me busy but at least I'm fairly prepped for the next term already so I'm less concerned about the time ticking away.

This evening we'll all be catching dinner with some friends before chilling out for the rest of the week and watchin Anna enjoy the whole festive thing. I'll be happy for some quiet time on the flip side so fingers crossed. Happy Christmas to all!!

Pictured: Mary Poppins the musical at the Bord Gais with Mamie-Johanna who also brought us a huge Christmas cake. At the same time Anna loved having her granny visiting and taking in lunch in a new place in Smithfield, while I unwind for my xmas break.

I'm officially finished lecturing for the year and although I have literally hundreds of papers to mark during the period, I'm glad of a little time in the house to do some bits and bobs and unwind a little. It was an amazing term and some really great modules and I'm really looking forward to taking on more in the new year, but for now I'm focusing on grading assignments and working on my own things for a while.

Mamie-Johanna was up to visit from Limerick during the week and took us to the Mary Poppins Musical at the Bord Gais which was a really good show with some of the best stage choreography and sets I've seen from one of those West End shows. We'll be following it up with the Panto at the Gaiety on Tuesday night too.

Along with the show, we also got our Christmas cake complete with edible ribbons and leaves which are absolutely Anna's favourite part and we took the opportunity to try out the new restaurant in Smithfield, Hidden for brunch. Sadly I would have preferred the evening menu with it's tapas options but the brunch was pretty good also. We'll have to try it again at night to see what the other menu is like.

On Wednesday, following my last lecture of the term, I took the evening out in RIOT on the quays for a few well placed drinks and, although my pool game wasn't up to standard on the day, it was a good night for catching up with people and shooting the breeze before the madness of Christmas really kicks in.

This week, along with the Panto, we have Mamie & Pappi-Dou from France coming over to stay with us for the holidays so Anna is rightfully excited and it will give me the distraction to get some work done and hopefully get in few overdue catch ups with people in town.

Pictured: Finally getting around to printing a full sized Ironman helmet with the 3D printer. Installing a new shed in the back garden. Doing the emerging technology class for my business students and an overdue lunch and drink out for Marie-Helene & I.

With the wind down before Christmas starting and the last week of lecturing ahead, I've been taking some time to have fun and do some bits and bobs at home. One of the things I've long wanted to try is 3D printing an Ironman helmet, so with that in mind with some red and gold filament and 36 hours of printing, I'm well on my way to dressing like Tony Stark.

Having a back garden for the first time is also proving fun with the delivery of a small shed where I'll be storing some outdoor items, tools and maybe even a couple of crates of drinks for the Christmas period. The shed itself went up in minutes and doesn't take up too much space which is ideal, and we only needed something small anyway.

In college I brought in my gadgets and toys for the students to experience and learn about emerging technology, and walking the plank above a skyscraper in virtual reality was definitely the hit of the day. This along with trying basic AR glasses and seeing some 3D printed items really made the possibilities for the home and business real for them.

Elsewhere, with Anna having so many activities and playdates after school, myself and Marie-Helene were finally able to get out for some lunch in Musashi, some Christmas shopping and even a sneaky drink before we had to head home. The flexibility of the lecturing really comes into play here, and although I really still miss my role at Meta, this wouldn't have been possible if I was working 9-5 daily as before.

The weekend was a bit of a washout though both figuratively and literally as Anna caught a bug from being out in the rain during the week, so she was disappointed that all activities had to be postponed. She is well on the mend this morning though!

Top of Mind - December 2nd
Pictured: Christmas decorating and activities in full swing at home. Beginning with a Nightmare Before Christmas Advent calendar we 3D printed gift boxes. Taking in the winter lights at Collins Barracks and another amazing guest speaker for my students.

The holiday spirit arrived early in the new house this year as the decorations began going up even before the 1st of December and Anna wasted no time in putting up 2 trees, one in the living room and another small on in her bedroom. The accessories and clothing are reflecting the time of year, complete with reindeer antlers which are worn everywhere.

As it's still us though, we got a Nightmare Before Christmas Advent calendar to keep with our more spooky side, but also used the 3D printer to make it a bit geeky with mini boxes for gifts which we can use as decorations. Anna also had a huge amount of fun at her schools winter bazaar on Friday and came home with a braid to match her style.

We're going to try and get in as many holiday events and activities as we can over this break and with that in mind the first on the cards was the short but really impressive lights display at Collins Barracks which was a full 360 degree immersive show and really close to home, so it was an easy one to pop over to and still be home early for a movie night.

In college I had another amazing guest speaker. My former Meta-mate and entrepreneur Deirdre from DM Career Conversations speaking with my HR students about career development, recruitment and some best practices. Great session and the group really got a lot from it, so here's hoping I can continue to ask these speakers to keep coming in during the next term.

I'm down to the second last week lecturing for the year which is great as it's amazing to see the progress over the last while and to see the graduations of last years students, but also leaves me with some apprehension at being off work for 4 weeks or so, so I'll stay busy with odd jobs at home.
