🗑️ The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has shown that over 750,000 tonnes of food waste was generated in Ireland in 2022.

Over 70 per cent of food waste was generated by food & drink sector businesses and 30 per cent by households.🍌

PRAYER BEFORE COUNCIL MEETING 'SHOULD BE STOPPED'
City councillors will this evening debate a motion which, if passed, could signal the end of the prayer at the start of Cork City Council meetings and the removal of the crucifix from the chamber. The motion was put forward by one of the new faces on Cork City Council, Social Democrats' Cllr Pádraig Rice who called for a separation of church and State while adding that it feels “like 1930s Ireland in there”. A Cork TD has called for an outright ban on tanning beds. Fianna Fáil's Christopher O’Sullivan made the call amid a new report on identifying signs of skin cancer. The report was published by the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital (SIVUH).

Well done mama Arya as she recently gave birth to 3 cubs whose dad is said to be a “very modern father”, Fota Wildlife Park has announced this morning. 🦁
Arya recently returned from Helsinki Zoo and was part of the first lion cub litter to be born at the Park. The 6 year old was paired with the male lion Yali, and their cubs were born on 5 June.

The words of mum of 2, Natalie, who faces eviction from her Direct Provision accommodation on the Kinsale Road in Cork city.
Natalie, who came to Ireland from South Africa 8 years ago with her 2 daughters, recently received a letter from the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, saying she would be evicted from her current accommodation tomorrow.

TRIBUTES PAID TO THE VOICE OF GAELIC GAMES:
Sadness swept the nation on Tuesday following the death of legendary sport broadcaster and commentator Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh. The Kerry native was 93 years old.
Micheál provided commentary on his last All-Ireland Final on 19 September 2010, when Cork faced Down in the football final at Croke Park. His career in RTÉ had spanned over 60 years.

🏃🏻‍♀️ This year’s Make Your Mark on Cancer walk will celebrate the life’s work of Micheál Sheridan, CEO of the Mercy University Hospital Foundation, who died on 4 June.

Taking place on 14 July, the event will see hundreds of walkers take to the road for the 22km charity walk from the Viaduct to the Town Hall in Bandon, which will once again raise funds for the Mercy Cancer Appeal.

FASTNET HITS 150! 🤯
One of Ireland’s best known and most iconic lighthouses, the granite tower of Fastnet Lighthouse off the Cork coast is 150 years old today. The lighthouse plays as crucial a role to navigation now as it did in 1904. Irish Lights will mark the anniversary next month with a commemorative event for all the engineers, technicians and mariners who have ensured that Fastnet has operated as an aid to navigation for all that time.

TEEN DILLON PREPARING FOR BIGGEST CHALLENGE YET:
Dillon Lynch, a 17 year old from Kildorrery, is taking on a record-breaking mountain climbing challenge in aid of Barretstown.
On 11 July, Dillon will begin his “biggest challenge yet” by climbing to the highest point of each of Ireland’s 32 counties in turn, with the goal of beating the current national record for this feat. This will involve running 160km in total, including over 8km of climbing, in under two-and-a-quarter days. 😳

COVID NUMBERS INCREASE IN SOUTH OF IRELAND:
There has been no increase in hospitalisations despite growing numbers of Covid-19 cases in the south of Ireland, the HSE has said. Although there was no spike in Covid-19 cases during the spring, the HSE Cork Kerry Community Healthcare (CKCH) says there has been a notable increase since the beginning of the summer.

FORMER TD ALLEN LAID TO REST:
Much-loved former minister of state, TD and lord mayor of Cork, Bernard Allen was laid to rest yesterday. An Tanáiste Micheál Martin & An Taoiseach Simon Harris were amongst those attending the requiem mass in the Cathedral of St Mary and St Anne. Mourners heard of the late Fine Gael politician’s love for sport & how he held a huge respect for all his constituents.

Former Minister of State, TD and Lord Mayor of Cork, Bernard Allen was laid to rest yesterday, Wednesday.
