Pictured here is the late Sister Noreen Dennehy, a nun from Kerry, who helped fellow Kerry-native Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty rescue thousands trapped behind enemy lines in N**i-occupied Italy during World War 2. At the war’s end, around 6,500 individuals would owe their lives to the escape line organized by Msgr O’Flaherty – known as the “scarlet pimpernel of the Vatican” and the “Oscar Schindler of Killarney” – and his aides.

Sr Noreen Dennehy and her fellow Irish nuns of the Community of Missionary Franciscan Sisters courageously provided refuge for hundreds of women and children throughout the occupation of Rome in 1943 and 1944. They would shelter, feed and clothe up to 40 at a time in their convent in Rome, located outside the enclave of the neutral Vatican City State.

Sr Noreen also liaised between Msgr O’Flaherty and members of the highest echelons of society in wartime Rome. She would convey messages from the monsignor to the “princess” – a key member of the local elite who provided the necessary logistical support and funding to sustain the operation of the escape route.

Tralee-based organization Irish Life and Lore has recently released a podcast featuring the late nun telling her story in her own words. Find out more here: https://irishheritagenews.ie/kerry-nun-sr-noreen-dennehy-helped-msgr-o-flaherty-in-ww2/

In the early 1950s, Bord na Móna began harvesting peat in the Kilcormac area of Co. Offaly. As a result, the town experienced a period of growth, prompting the need for additional housing to accommodate the influx of Bord na Móna workers. This led to the construction of St Cormac’s Park, an ambitious housing project comprising over 100 houses located in what was previously called Brown’s Field. An oral history collection produced by Irish Life and Lore, which was released last year, includes interviews with several residents of St Cormac’s Park, including Teresa Coyne (pictured here), whose husband, Johnny, worked in the briquette factory.

BACK IN STOCK!! Big House in Kerry- A Social History
by Jane O'Hea O'Keeffe

This book draws together the work of twelve contributors, each of whom delves into the history of the one of the county's big houses and the families who lived in them.

Part of the impetus for this book was a desire to chart the origins, development and decline of Kerry's network of big houses, and to reclaim from the ruins details of their elegant architecture and their elaborate interiors. It was equally important, however, to reinvest the ruins – and indeed the houses that endure – with the voices and experiences of the men and women who lived there, the people who sent sons to war, served on Grand Juries or at Westminster, managed or buckled under debt and navigated the twilight of the Anglo-Irish ascendancy in Ireland. Some remarkable women lived in these houses, women whose strength, foresight and hard work left an enduring impression on their localities. Their experiences and the experiences of local people who worked in or supplied the big houses are also reclaimed in this volume which seeks to provide an overview of life as it was lived in the Big House.

The book is Illustrated with a wide selection of rare images including, in many cases, previously unpublished photographs donated by the families themselves, and each chapter adds to our understanding of the origins of these grand structures, the fortunes and misfortunes of the families who lived and loved there, and the intricate connections between them.
