Rough Gem Origins

It’s an expression often used to describe a ‘state of being’ in another - “oh, he’s fine, he’s just a rough gem” - and by this we are implying that below the surface appearance of that individual, there is something genuine - something quite worth saving.

As we look around Bali we can find any number of people who might fit that description, but we may also discover properties that, by the same standard of assessment, fall well within the tag of ‘rough gems’ - hence the naming of our first documentary series here in Bali.

Rough Gem seeks not to dispose of or tear down and build anew, but to up-cycle these unique properties and in so doing, capture some essence of their amazing pasts, breathing new life into them while creating luxurious, functional and eco-friendly dwelling places for generations to come.

It occurred to us that documenting this process, from first discovery to the design phase, on through the restoration and then final finishing touches, is a worthwhile pursuit and that others may be interested in witnessing these amazing transformations. And beyond just the surface view of what it takes to accomplish this, it may be equally important to understand what goes on inside the designers’ heads as they take on these challenges. What gets them out of bed in the morning? What fuels their passion for design? Where do their inspiring ideas come from?
