05/10/2022

Legendary grindcore/death metal band Macabre are enjoying a healthy chart resurgence for their classic track "Hitchhiker", taken from their 2000 concept album, “Dahmer“. That meteoric rise for the 22-year-old track was triggered by its appearance in the recently debuted episode 3, "Doin' A Dahmer", of Netflix hit crime drama series ‘Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story‘.

Its inclusion served as a introduction to a whole new audience, propelling it to the top of the iTunes rock chart and also as of press time, #14 on the Spotify global top 50 most streamed tracks.

The version of the track featured within the series showcases some additional guitar tracking done by American actor Evan Peters, who portrays Jeffrey Dahmer in the miniseries. Peters is probably best known for his multiple roles on the FX anthology series American Horror Story.

Macabre themselves commented on their inclusion in the series on social media yesterday, October 04th, offering:

“The way director and producer Ryan Murphy has incorporated music into ‘Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story‘ has been next level, so we were beyond psyched for him to include "Hitchhiker" in the show. We were all stoked to see the final result and when we did we were totally blown away… it’s so extremely well done, so much so, that some folks were able to guess the song just by seeing a few seconds of Evan Peters’ hands in the trailer!! How crazy cool is that?

It’s an incredible honor to be such a big part of the show.”

Su***de Silence has come full circle & returned to their original label home, Century Media Records. With nearly two decades of non-stop touring around the globe, hundreds of thousands of records sold and cementing themselves as a lynchpin band in modern extreme metal, the Riverside, California quintet has rejoined the label that released the highly acclaimed albums: "The Cleansing" (2007), "No Time To Bleed" (2009) and "The Black Crown" (2011).

Chris Garza (guitar) comments: "I can’t believe how far we’ve all come since the band began 20 years ago. Today we’re back where it all started; writing music together in the same room where the first three albums were created. We’re incredibly excited to be working with Century Media Records once again as we enter the next chapter of our career."

Mike Gitter, Century Media Vice President of A&R adds: "Su***de Silence has long been an important band in heavy music, not only being the band that really put ‘Deathcore’ on the map but a band that has continued to redefine themselves and beat the odds at every turn. The new music I’ve heard from them has all the intensity and earmarks of their past while continuing to push into the proverbial red.

"It feels great to welcome Su***de Silence, undeniably the most influential Deathcore band ever, back to Century Media Records," says Philipp Schulte, Century Media Vice President and Global Head. "Working with them again feels like reuniting what was never meant to be divided. We’re happy being the band’s supporting label home again. No pity for the cowards!"

Su***de Silence are presently deep into the writing of the follow up to 2020’s Become The Hunter, which was released via Nuclear Blast Entertainment. It will be the band’s fourth album with vocalist Eddie Hermida (ex-All Shall Perish) who joined Su***de Silence following the passing of frontman Mitch Lucker. The band recently finished an extensive US tour with Jinjer and have announced a co-headlining run on the US 2022 Chaos & Carnage tour with Carnifex, labelmates Lorna Shore, Upon a Burning Body, Angelmaker and Distant, beginning May 15th and running until June 4.

Unique Leader has announced the signing of American modern deathcore juggernaut Crown Magnetar. Their forthcoming EP "Alone In Death" will be released on 25th March.

Crown Magnetar commented: "While as a band we’ve always been about incredibly fast, incredibly jarring deathcore with a lot of death metal influence, Alone In Death was written with speed and captivation in mind the whole time, on top of our go-to writing styles. At the same time, we’ve added an emphasis on emotional depth, making sure the riffs and beats were as memorable as they were extreme. Everyone goes through varying degrees of hardship, pain and isolation. Alone in Death reflects that both lyrically and emotionally."

With a compelling combination of tech, core and death elements, Crown Magnetar emerged in 2017 showcasing technical riffs, relentless blast beats and crushing yet dynamic vocals. Releasing "The Prophet of Disgust" EP in 2018, the band followed up with their critically acclaimed debut full-length entitled "The Codex Of Flesh" on 30th April, 2021 which they supported with a US tour alongside Lorna Shore.

Shock Withdrawal - featuring members of Maruta, Mos Generator, and Nitesoil - premiere a new song titled “Despair Ratio”. The track is taken from their upcoming self-titled debut EP, which was recorded by Travis Bacon at Svart Sound, mastered by Arthur Rizk (Power Trip, Cavalera Conspiracy, Municipal Waste), and given artwork by Primitive Man's Ethan Lee McCarthy.

The EP will be released on March 4 via Roman Numeral Records.

Tells Shock Withdrawal's Mitchell Luna:

"We filmed the video for 'Despair Ratio' ourselves with a budget of zero dollars and a 6 pack of beer. Rather than just premiere a song with no accompanying visual element, we had some fun and captured rehearsal footage, which I then edited and incorporated some stylized filters/overlays. The video itself is straightforward and to the point. We are just 3 nerds in our late 30’s who fu***ng love grindcore and are stoked to collaborate on music together. There truly isn’t much else to it than that. Plain and simple. Enjoy the video in its 1×1 aspect ratio glory."

Adds the band's Nick Emde:

"The idea for the band goes back in time when me and Jono were obsessing on extreme metal of the late eighties and nineties. Bands like Nasum, Brutal Truth, Lock Up, and Soilent Green. We couldn’t get enough of it and wanted to form a band of our own based on those types of influences. We moved apart from each other and time goes on.

Right before COVID we started talking about getting something going and through the exchange of riffs and drums via email across the country the band was formed. After a few demos and through the thoughts of finding a singer only one person came to mind and that was Mitch. His vocal style was spot on, he was already a friend and his Latino attitude was just what we needed! As soon as the lineup was situated we got the process going. Jono recorded the drums in Texas and the rest was done in LA."

“‘The Mistake‘ is about letting other people’s opinions of you seep into your subconscious and filling you with self-doubt. In life, you can’t always win over everyone. But don’t let the haters stifle your true potential and stand in between you and your goals.”

It’s been about a year since I, The Breather graced us with return single ‘PRËY‘ after disbanding in 2015. To say this excited metalcore fans would be an understatement, however we’ve long awaited the promise of more new music to come. Well, it seems like the band’s time is now, as they’ve been teasing their new track ‘BRAINSIC’ for some time now and it’s finally dropped, and it will blow you into space.

Amongst the teasing of new music, I, The Breather have also been preparing fans for the prospect of a ten year reunion tour for albums These Are My Sins and Truth And Purpose, so it’s feeling like the Baltimore metalcore band are back for good this time. The band posted on Facebook (see below) and warned fans “our story is not close to being done…”

So let’s immerse ourselves into ‘BRAINSIC’. I, The Breather told us it would be raw, and it absolutely is. The vocals are raspy and explode in unison to the pounding drums and bass. The breakdowns are earth-shattering and will have you nodding eloquently with satisfaction. The chorus is equally destructive each time round, and maintains that brutal momentum across the song – absolutely menacing. The band are back in full force and this track is true of that.

US pop punkers State Champs came back into our lives recently with their affluent new single ‘Just Sound’. While that song is still heavy on my playlist, the band have unleashed an even catchier new jam and believe me, this one is going to shake up your world.

With State Champs being one of my favourite bands, I already foresee this era being the band’s best and biggest yet. ‘Outta My Head’ is an explosive pop punk anthem that feeds off all of the good things in life. What the band excelled at on Living Proof, they’ve just seemingly built on and this latest release is one of the band’s catchiest songs yet. Featuring an undeniably bouncy hook, ‘Outta My Head’ is your song for the summer ahead. Can’t get these guys outta my head, but I’m down with it.

Let’s face it, the world is a bit s**t at the moment and we all need something to get us through our day – music helps, like, alot!

Four Year Strong have heard our calls and they’ve delivered a stellar rendition of The Verve‘s ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony‘ and it’s just full of wholesome pop punk goodness. With guitars replacing the iconic string section and vocalists Dan O’Connor and Alan Day bouncing back and forth, you will be forgiven for instantly singing along with a big smile on your face.

On the song, the band says:

“We’ve always loved the song, it holds a lot of nostalgia for me. Makes me think of being 12 thinking I was cool, which I was not. Everything about the song is great, the melody, the hook, the beat, and the string part. They all live rent-free in my brain. Being able to create something that feels like FYS and having great foundations to start with was very fun.”

Go on, give it a go… you know you want to!

Who else was stoked to hear ex-PAGAN front woman Nikki Brumen’s new musical endeavours when she joined Bergen-based band Blood Command this year? You can bet your life that we frothed the cleaner melodic/rock route she’s now destined for and the band have just released their second single called ‘The End is Her’.

Since ‘A Villain’s Monologue’ was released, everyone’s been waiting for the band’s next move as they rapidly pick up momentum with Nikki behind the mic. ‘The End is Her’ is set to send a whirring mix of emotions for all you heavy fans though, given this tune allows us to experience the frontwoman take on indie pop/punk melodies for the first time that’s a little more in tune with Aussie rockers WAAX.

Blood Command mastermind Yngve Andersen highlights:

“’The End is Her” is for the losers, for the wallflowers and for the people who never quite fit in. It’s a song about feeling so invisible that no matter how loud you scream, no one will hear you. For anyone who burns so brightly but nobody else sees even a flicker of the flame.

I wrote the lyrics at time when I was feeling weak and alone but used this darkness as ammo to become stronger. You never know what is going on in someone’s mind or what they are capable of, so I want this song to remind people to never underestimate the outcasts. That we have the ability to use the doubt of others to ignite something inside of us – to strike a match and light the world on fire.
