Following Prabowo’s goal of achieving food self-sufficiency by 2027, Indonesia plans to stop importing staple foods, particularly from Vietnam. However, the Vietnamese Ambassador to Indonesia, Ta Van Thong, believes it is only a matter of time before Jakarta budges, as climate change is likely to take a toll on its rice production and government reserves.

“We have heard that Indonesia plans to suspend [rice] imports because you have enough reserves. I think that [plan] is not sustainable. That stock would be used up. So when Indonesia needs to import [once the supply is depleted], it will [go back to] importing rice again,” Thong said in a press briefing.

Recently, a pileup involving a truck carrying gallons of water and six cars occurred at the Ciawi 2 Tollgate on Tuesday night, claiming 8 lives and leaving 11 people injured. Ruth Hanna Simatupang, an analyst and ex-investigator at the National Transportation Safety Committee, pointed out that many drivers, particularly ‘temporary drivers’ hired as substitutes, lack knowledge of the vehicle they drive.

Ruth called for improvements to the existing driving license system, stating, “[The government] often blames the road conditions and other external factors when accidents like this happen. But the root cause of such accidents is giving driving licenses to the people who do not deserve them.”
