🏟️ Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys (55.926)

The Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium is a stadium located in Catalonia, Spain. Originally built in 1927, the stadium was formerly known as the Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc and the Estadio de Montjuïc.

The stadium, which now has a capacity of 55,926, was originally built to host the 1929 International Exposition. The 1936 Olympic Games were also initially proposed to be held there.

When it was built, the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium was designed by Pere Domenech i Roura and officially opened on May 20, 1929. The inauguration ceremony featured a rugby match between Spain and Italy.

The opening ceremony also featured a match between the Catalan national team and Bolton Wanderers. The Catalans won a surprising 4-0 victory.

Historical records also include the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium, which hosted the 1936 People's Olympiad as a protest against the 1936 Olympic Games held in Berlin.

However, these plans never materialized due to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. The stadium underwent further extensive renovations following Barcelona's bid to host the 1992 Olympic Games.

Before Barcelona, RCD Espanyol used the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium as their home from 1997 to 2009, before moving to the RCDE Stadium.

Starting in the 2023/2024 season, Barcelona will be based at this stadium. This will continue until the Camp Nou renovations are completed in 2025/2026.
