It’s already…been reading the reviews. I don’t think that’s what anyone is taking away from this FaireFreak: Man, the reviews are so good. I thought the reviews…like, I read everything. And I was like…nice…good job. Look, I’m glad that people who are in from that side are understanding a little bit of the intent and stuff. What’s really most important to me is look, this could never have happened, not just if Jeff and Brandy and Darla and Louis hadn’t let us into their lives, but there’s so many other people that are in this, Don White Glenda Fleeman. We shot so much stuff with so many people it’s probably 10% of what you actually see is actually in the final product. There’s a whole other section of this that we were shooting that was that was really about the community in the present tense, and we filmed with a lot of really great people. We filmed it, amazing, the old timers who who had a very different experience of being there. But, none of this would have happened, really, without the graciousness that they had for us and the trust that we built with them. It was like, for me, one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve ever had. Not just in making something but being around real true artists that built a life around making the kinds of stuff that they made.

They say that. What does that mean in reality and what does that mean to you? Lance Oppenheimer: I love reality TV and I watch reality TV just as much as I watch Stanley Kubrick movies. I don’t think it’s a low form of art. What reality TV normally is, is you enter a situation with a pre-written script and you work with people that would adhere to the script that you have, or you know a story that you’re trying to tell. In this case, you know like I said, the inquiry was the past the present the future of the festival, but what we what we ended up filming we could’ve never planned for, and there was no scripts in this. the events that we are are photographing all happened and it is all real and is the cycle of pain that is perpetuated every every year in the back office that is all 100% real

Lance Oppenheim:There’s a dimension by which every person who’s in this because they are performers…that’s what they do at the faire, they are playing to the camera but that doesn’t mean that what they’re going through is false, right? I think that’s the thing that’s sort of, will be the interesting litmus test for most audiences. Not just of this community but also documentary viewers everywhere. I’ve always found what makes me excited about making documentaries is working in a very collaborative way with the people that are in the film. But everything that is emotional and moments that one person says something about another person or someone goes to George to say something or George does something that affects someone else. That’s real. It’s this back and forth. It’s a collaboration with every single person in this to tell ultimately, as close to the truth as we can, while also imbibing and inhabiting these sort of magical elements. And if you go back into the history of documentary filmmaking, from the 20’s and the 30’s “Nanook of the North” the first documentary film ever made. You look at movies in the 60’s like “On the Bowery”. This collaboration where people would make films that felt like fiction films because of the way that they were styled.

It’s certainly taking elements of the faire and using the way it’s shot. A lot of the style comes from there. But the story is all real, you know, the succession story is a hundred percent true. And there is a lot of real active investigative journalism done to make the thing happen, to figure out, “OK George is talking about this person. That’s probably going to affect this person and that person.” How are we going to film this and how do we also be sensitive to the fact that these are people’s lives and their businesses. And for every business there’s probably a thousand, maybe plus, people that work for that exact person. The hyper-stylized moments of the show really announce themselves when you see it. There’s a talking dragon, you know. Yeah, George talks to his angels, which is something he actually does. But then it’s also like, well how can I film that in a way that captures his subjective experience. Those things are there and they’re very apparent. The things that are real is everything else. The story, people’s emotions, how they’re talking to one another, how they’re feeling. What we set out to do here when we first came in, the thing we told everybody, was “we’re here because we’re interested in the past, the present and the future of the faire, how George built this place, how he runs it now, and what’s going to happen when he’s gone. Who’s going to run it. That was always our inquiry here.

I noticed that a lot of people in the community were saying “Hold on a second! Phyllis Patterson invented the original renaissance festival, not George. I think that line was taken out of context from a larger suite in the actual show. This show isn’t meant to be about the history of renaissance festivals. It’s really meant to show how the people of Texas Renaissance Festival have devoted their lives to being there and in a way to really, bowing down to George, right? FaireFreak 2: Right, kind of navigating his, the whole “hand of the king” thingLance Oppenheimer:I think if to give George credit, I think what he did do is he created a world for faires to be hyper profitable. If he had any impact on the whole culture I would say, like, those renaissance faire owners look at George and say “Oh my god, that guy, this faire is printing cash. George built a city and ran a town and is the mayor of the town and controls really everything there. And so I think in that sense it’s true that renaissance faires want to be maybe in the same position as George in the sense that he controls everything, they don’t have to deal with the municipal government, stuff like that. But the true renaissance festival came from Phyllis Patterson, not George. So I want to set the re
