Dr. Marie-Marcelle H. Deschamps, a key figure in Haiti’s fight against AIDS and armed violence, is making significant strides in empowering women and addressing healthcare challenges. As the deputy leader of GHESKIO, a pioneering Caribbean research clinic, Deschamps has introduced a global health model focusing on essential services for women, especially heads of families and r**e victims. Amidst Haiti’s crisis of malnutrition and limited healthcare access, she has innovatively implemented programs like electronic cash transfers and food kits to aid 20,000 beneficiaries.
For her groundbreaking work, Deschamps is a finalist for the 2023 Women Building Peace Award from the U.S. Institute of Peace. Her approach, emphasizing the central role of women in societal health and stability, aligns with GHESKIO’s vision under Dr. Jean William “Bill” Pape’s leadership. Despite the challenges of kidnappings, gang violence, and a dwindling healthcare workforce, Deschamps remains committed to her mission, buoyed by her faith and the resilience of the Haitian women she serves. Her nomination acknowledges not only her contributions but also the ongoing plight of Haiti and its healthcare workers.
