Major Digital Service Providers (DSPs) including Spotify are cracking down on streaming fraud, leading to a notable increase in track takedowns.
It's crucial to recognize the growing threat of fraud in the industry. This dishonest behavior disproportionately affects honest artists striving to earn a livelihood from their craft. Recent surveys suggest that up to 16% of DSP streaming statements are deemed 'suspicious,' potentially resulting in billions of dollars in incorrectly tracked revenues for 2022 alone.
While Spotify and other DSPs assure us that their systems target genuine instances of fraud, we've encountered cases where tracks were mistakenly taken down. Our team diligently addresses these issues, but it's important to note that royalties from fraudulent activities might be frozen. Ultimately, these taken actions will benefit honest creators who adhere to the DSP regulations.
All music creators should be aware that paying for streams is against the rules of Spotify and other DSPs, and most promotional offers are based on bot playlists or artificial streams. Although some services may operate within Spotify's guidelines, users of these services also report that they've encountered problems with accusations of fake streams.

Effective April 1st, Spotify has implemented a significant change to its royalty payout system. Tracks on the platform must now accumulate a minimum of 1,000 streams within a 12-month period to qualify for recorded royalties. This shift aims to consolidate payments and prioritize artists whose music achieves meaningful engagement. Spotify revealed that 99.5% of all streams on their service are of tracks that have 1,000 or more listens a year.

While this shift impacts music creators, Spotify aims to boost the royalty pool for eligible artists, reducing fragmentation and ensuring fair compensation, by better distributing payments that are often too small to reach artists.

In addition to this change, Spotify has revised its royalty scheme for 'functional' genres (including "noise, sound effects and silence recordings"), requiring a minimum track length of two minutes to qualify for royalties.

It's important to note that these adjustments are exclusive to Spotify and do not affect other digital service providers. We distribute to Spotify and also to over 100 streaming and download services around the world that remain unaffected.
