Spotify Stops Paying Artists

Effective from the start of the new year, Spotify will stop paying artists and will instead use their own criteria to award money to artists as they see fit, breaking the rules of paying artists for their streams.

The new policy stipulates that songs need to fulfill three criteria - generating more than 1000 streams, these must be from at least 50 unique users, and created within 12 months - or be excluded entirely from revenue calculations.

In addition, previously every stream counted towards royalties, albeit modestly and without considering the length of the tracks. Spotify now reserves the right to not count any stream, at their own discretion.

This means that Spotify now reserves the right to self determine the amount of streams, and self determine the amount of license fees they pay per stream.

These changes not only symbolize a detrimental shift but also a reallocation of funds from the small to large artists. For labels with hundreds of such tracks, this could translate into significant sums. The most affected will be artists at the start of their careers and labels promoting cultural diversity.

Spotify also denies the introduction of 'pro rata temporis' payments, rewarding longer tracks more, and a serious discussion on 'user-centric' payment systems, where a user's subscription fee is distributed among the artists they actually listen to. Currently Spotify keeps any unused fees for themselves.

This situation highlights the concerning power of a market-dominant company. It underscores the need to promote competition among streaming providers, and validates what many in the industry have been saying for long: Spotify’s goal is to stop paying artists completely, and this is the first step.

ZAGREB, Croatia – 3.12.2023 – Count Zero Records, a leader in ethical music production and distribution, today reaffirms its unwavering stance against all forms of hate spread through music. Recent events have brought to the forefront the need for a collective stand against songs that incite violence and discrimination.

While Count Zero Records does not comment on specific artists or tracks without a thorough review, we are deeply concerned about reports of music being used as a vehicle for hate speech. We unequivocally condemn any song, lyrics, or messages that call for violence or discrimination against any group or individual

The song “Harbu Darbu" by Stilla X Ness - currently #1 on Spotify and YouTube in Israel - calls for the genocide of the Palestinian people and for the death of Bella Hadid, Dua Lipa and Mia Khalifa.

Such content stands in massive and total opposition to the values Count Zero Records upholds.

We call on Spotify, YouTube and ALL distributors to take down this song, effective immediately, from all platforms.

Our label is committed to producing and promoting music that brings people together, celebrates diversity, and uplifts communities. We believe in the power of music as a force for good, to inspire change, and to build bridges – not to destroy them.

Statement on the Current Gaza Conflict, Our Historical Responsibilities, and the Undying Flame of Humanity by Georg P. Mavridis, President of Count Zero Records.

As an Austrian, our historical legacy obliges us to be vigilant and outspoken about human rights violations and injustices, irrespective of where they occur. We must remember our past, learn from it, and use our voices to champion justice and humanity.

With that sense of duty, I condemn the actions of Hamas, which has been responsible for recent attacks leading to the loss and harm of numerous innocent Israeli lives. The support Hamas receives from the Iranian regime — a regime that brutally suppressed its own citizens' peaceful protests and executed women advocating for equal rights — is equally concerning.

Similarly, the reported human rights violations by the Israeli Defence Force deeply disturb me. The continued detainment and mistreatment of Palestinians, especially those unaffiliated with Hamas, stands in stark contrast to the principles of justice and human rights. In doing so, I also recognise and support those compassionate humans in Israel that call their government to moderation. Each individual, regardless of their ethnicity or political stance, is deserving of dignity, respect, and freedom.

It is with genuine concern that I observe the rapidity with which some Austrian politicians and journalists, without due contemplation, have endorsed violent measures against civilians, citing defense. Defense and revenge are not interchangeable. Justice cannot be equated with barbarism. These are principles that transcend borders and politics.

In these somber hours of 2023, I wholeheartedly align with the calls of the United Nations and Pope Francis, urging all parties to rediscover humanity amidst conflict. History has shown us the devastating consequences of silence and inaction.

We must do better.
